Gungbe Wikinews Trainings and Edit-a-thons

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Gungbe Wikinews is the first and only indigenous African language with a wikinews subdomain (guw.wikinews.org). The subdomain was launched on April 20, 2023. Gungbe Wikinews is positioned as an online distributed and networked voluntary journalism news service - offering situated, active, learning opportunities for emerging journalists. To live up to its expectations, the gungbe Wikinews require daily news content creations. This will be achieved if more editors are trained on how to contribute to the Gungbe Wikinews. Furthermore, the gungbe Wikinews subdomain requires promotions so that all communities speaking gungbe in Nigeria, Benin and beyond can have access to a collaborative peer-reviewed timely free news. Such promotions will not be possible if more trained active contributors and news contents are not available on the gungbe Wikinews. The news articles will also be read through audio spoken news so that the not-so-literates can as well benefit from this aspect of Wikimedia project.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I will translate the following materials[1] from English to Gungbe in order to have a localised material for the trainings. I will involve experienced gungbe speakers in making sure these translations are accurate and unambiguous. I will do this by organising a pre-event translation discussion among existing gungbe Wikinews editors. This method will be effective because the expected participants will have training materials and can easily use them after each section has been covered during the trainings and this will be in their local that they can easily understand.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
  1. Day 1 (Pre-event meet-up): I will carry out a pre-event translation meet-up between the experienced editors and native Gungbe speakers to complete the translation of the materials to be used during the events from English to Gungbe.
  2. (Day 2 - 7) Trainings and Edit-a-thon: I will carry out 6 training events on writing news articles to Gungbe Wikinews which includes a 2 day workshop for reading, recording and adding spoken news article via Wikimedia Commons.
  1. Day 2 and 3: Introduction to Wikinews
  2. Day 4: Understanding article layout
  3. Day 5: Edit-a-thon on creating news articles (hands-on practical)
  4. Day 6 and 7: Reading, recording and adding audio spoken news to created-news articles via Wikimedia Commons.

Here are samples of how the complete Wikinews with audio spoken news added will look like:

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
  1. Sagbosam: I am one of the main contributor to gungbe Wikinews. I also contributed majorly to gungbe Wikinews when it was in incubator. I will be coordinating the event. I will also facilitate in the trainings.
  2. Misteld: He is a Sysop in Gungbe Wikinews. He will co-facilitate the event and help to keep news articles created clean. He will help in managing the project. He will support in making sure the audio Wikinews added to commons in of good quality.
  3. Gadarawamo: As an experienced wikinews contributor, he will take part in co-facilitating the events and assist communication with gungbe journalists students, writers and literate gungbe speakers.
  4. DonKevin: As an experienced Wikimedia events organiser, he will provide advice and assistance on how to carry out a successful project.
6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

This project will help gungbe speakers to have more Wikinews contents in gungbe language. It will also help them to contribute to news article in gungbe language. The not-so-literate and visually impaired will be able to listen to audio Wikinews in gungbe.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Culture, heritage or GLAM

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Digital Access

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants are members of Gungbe Wikinews community, journalist students and writers in Lagos tertiary institutions and gungbe journalists in mainstream media. I will encourage the participants to join the pre-event meet-up. I will organise a call on Google meet where I will intimate them about the history of gungbe Wikinews, its creation and what to expect in the trainings. During the trainings, I will provide guides for the participants and give time for them to ask questions. Experienced contributors will be on standby to address participants questions during the trainings. After the event, I will create a WhatsApp group specifically for the participants, where participants can ask questions in real-time. I will be sharing news topic from multiple reliable sources that can be used in creating new news articles on the WhatsApp group to continue to keep participants interested in contributing to gungbe Wikinews.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

I will have a brief discussion on the UCoC and friendly space policy with participants before each event. Additionally, I will provide a dedicated organizer's contact and venue security contact with participants.
