Bridging the Gap: Introducing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Projects to Tunisian Students
Despite its global importance, Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects remain largely unfamiliar to many students and young people in Tunisia. This project seeks to address this knowledge gap by introducing Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects to a new generation of learners, fostering their understanding of free knowledge and empowering them to contribute meaningfully to these platforms.
The primary objectives of this initiative are:
Awareness and Training: Introduce students to the Wikimedia ecosystem, with a special focus on Wikipedia, and teach them the skills required to edit and contribute effectively. Accessibility and Inclusion: Provide access to a fully equipped space with computers and a stable internet connection, ensuring inclusivity for students who lack these resources. Skill Development: Promote digital literacy, research skills, and collaborative editing, empowering students to share their knowledge and amplify their voices on a global platform. To achieve these goals, the project will establish a dedicated hub open 60 hours per month. This space will serve as a learning and collaboration center, equipped with:
Computers: Offering hands-on experience with Wikimedia tools. High-Speed Internet: Facilitating seamless engagement with online resources. Expert Guidance: Training sessions led by experienced Wikimedia volunteers and educators. Through this project, students will not only gain practical skills in research, writing, and editing but also become contributors to the global pool of free knowledge. Additionally, the initiative will promote equal opportunities by addressing the digital divide that prevents many students from accessing such resources independently.
This effort is more than a training program—it’s an investment in the future of free knowledge in Tunisia, cultivating a generation of informed and active contributors to Wikimedia projects.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
Project Plan: After-School Wikipedia Program
Step 1: Opening the Call for Participation We will begin by opening a call for applications, inviting students to participate in the after-school Wikipedia project. This will target motivated students who are eager to learn about Wikimedia projects and contribute to the free knowledge ecosystem.
Step 2: Selecting Participants and Forming Groups A total of 48 participants will be selected from the pool of applicants based on their enthusiasm and potential. These participants will be divided into six groups, each consisting of eight members, to ensure focused and personalized learning experiences.
Step 3: Setting Up a Learning Space We will rent a suitable venue equipped with computers and internet access, providing an optimal learning environment. The space will be available for 60 hours per month and will be used to conduct workshops and collaborative work sessions.
Step 4: Conducting Workshops Each group will participate in a series of five hands-on workshops, designed to progressively build their skills in using and contributing to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects:
Introduction to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Projects Overview of Wikimedia’s mission and platforms. Discussion on the value of free knowledge. Creating a Wikimedia Account and First Edits Step-by-step guidance on account setup. Introduction to editing basics and sandbox usage. Creating a First Article on Wikipedia Researching and structuring content. Learning Wikipedia’s guidelines for verifiability and neutrality. Uploading Photos to Wikimedia Commons Understanding copyright and licensing. Hands-on practice in uploading and categorizing images. Expanding Skills: Advanced Article Creation Refining article-writing techniques. Collaborating on group projects to create meaningful content. Step 5: Motivational Closing Activity At the end of the project, the top 24 participants (based on engagement, contribution quality, and teamwork) will be rewarded with an entertaining and educational trip. This trip aims to recognize their efforts, foster camaraderie, and encourage continued volunteering on Wikipedia.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The primary target participants are students from schools and institutes in Tunisia, aged between 13 and 18, who are eager to learn about digital literacy, free knowledge, and collaborative editing on Wikimedia projects. These students are typically from communities where access to technology and exposure to platforms like Wikipedia is limited, making this project an opportunity to bridge the digital divide.
Engaging Participants Before and During Activities
Before Activities:
Outreach Campaigns: Use school visits, social media, and local community centers to introduce the project and invite applications. Application Process: Open a transparent and simple call for candidacy, allowing interested students to express their motivation to participate. Selection Process: Choose participants based on their interest, diversity, and representation from various schools and regions. During Activities:
Interactive Workshops: Conduct hands-on workshops where students learn by doing, fostering engagement and enthusiasm. Team-Based Approach: Divide participants into small groups to encourage collaboration, peer support, and teamwork. Gamified Learning: Introduce quizzes, challenges, and editing contests to keep the sessions exciting and engaging. Ongoing Communication: Use messaging platforms or group chats to maintain communication, share resources, and answer queries in real time. Follow-Up After Activities
Community Building:
Encourage participants to join Wikimedia groups or communities to stay connected and contribute actively. Provide opportunities for them to attend local or global Wikimedia events, fostering a sense of belonging to the larger Wikimedia movement. Mentorship Program:
Pair new contributors with experienced mentors (including alumni from the project) to guide them in their journey on Wikimedia platforms. Offer regular check-ins to track progress and provide personalized support. Recognition and Incentives:
Acknowledge and celebrate participants’ contributions through certificates, awards, or showcasing their work in community events. Motivate them with advanced opportunities, such as participating in new projects, workshops, or Wikimedia competitions like Wiki Loves Earth or Wiki Loves Monuments. Sustainability:
Establish an alumni network of past participants to keep them involved in future initiatives. Provide access to the learning space and resources for continued contribution beyond the project timeline. By actively engaging participants before, during, and after the activities, this project aims to not only teach new skills but also cultivate a sustainable community of young Wikimedia contributors.
