Challenges Faced: 1. The Absence of a WikiBuku Community in Indonesia Unlike WikiData and WikiSource, which already have active communities under the Wikimedia Indonesia umbrella, WikiBuku has yet to establish a strong user base. The lack of an organized community makes it difficult to sustain projects, leading many contributors to discontinue their involvement after attending training sessions. 2. Limited Interest and Understanding of Open-Licensed Book Writing Reading communities in Indonesia, such as Indonesia Book Party and other literacy groups, have many members who enjoy reading. However, few are aware that they can also contribute by writing and compiling free books on WikiBuku. Additionally, many educators with valuable teaching experiences and insights lack a dedicated platform to share their knowledge and best practices in the form of open books on WikiBuku. 3. Limited Availability of Open Educational Resources on WikiBuku Indonesia Currently, the number of books available on WikiBuku Indonesia is significantly lower than those on other Wikimedia projects. Furthermore, training sessions for contributors on book development—including technical and editorial aspects—are far less common compared to training for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia initiatives.
Key Approaches Implemented: 1. Building a WikiBuku Community by Engaging Local Communities and Educators a. Organizing training sessions with local communities, such as Indonesia Book Party, Komunitas Ibu Profesional, and educator communities, to encourage their participation in creating open-content books on WikiBuku. This initiative will collaborate with Wikimedia communities in Indonesia to ensure more contextual and sustainable contributions. b. Based on experiences from Creative Commons training in WikiBuku, many educators are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge, particularly in cultural fields. However, they face challenges in understanding and utilizing the WikiBuku platform effectively. c. Collaborative book writing is often perceived as more challenging than contributing to Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects. Therefore, topics will be tailored to participants' interests to create a more comfortable writing environment. These topics will not be limited to fiction, such as poetry, but will also include various subjects based on participants' expertise and enthusiasm. d. Establishing networks with writers and editors to introduce WikiBuku as a collaborative writing platform under a Creative Commons license.
2. Project-Based Training Focused on Collaborative Books In addition to learning technical editing skills, participants will directly engage in co-writing books on various topics. A primary focus will be placed on cultural-themed books, aligned with participants' interests and expertise.
3. Sustaining the Community through Mentorship and Communication Platforms a. Each participant will receive guidance throughout the writing process on WikiBuku. b. An online community group (WhatsApp/Telegram) will be established to maintain communication and ensure continued engagement beyond the training sessions.
4. Gamification and Recognition for Top Contributors a. Introducing writing challenges with a points system and rewards for the most active contributors. b. Providing incentives such as books on writing and exclusive merchandise to boost participant motivation. c. High-quality contributions from the training sessions will be compiled into e-books and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as Open Educational Resources (OER). This will ensure that the content continues to grow and remains accessible to a wider audience.
Desired Changes: 1. Enhancing content on WikiBuku and Wikimedia Commons by adding high-quality open books and freely licensed media. 2. Increasing participation and contributor retention by attracting new users and supporting event organizers. 3. Raising awareness of open licensing to help communities understand free book concepts and the dissemination of open knowledge. 4. Establishing WikiBuku as a sustainable collaborative platform by fostering active community engagement and long-term contributors.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The WikiBhuana: Wikibuku project focuses on a single key activity: a Workshop designed to support local community contributions in developing WikiBuku and Wikimedia Commons. This workshop is conducted as an in-person session in collaboration with local communities or educator groups in various regions. The workshop consists of two main phases. During the pre-workshop phase, participants discuss the writing themes they will develop, including illustration concepts. Trainers guide this process to ensure that both content and illustrations align with the guidelines of WikiBuku and Wikimedia Commons. In the in-person workshop phase, participants receive training on the basics of editing on WikiBuku, structuring their contributions, and techniques for collaborative book writing. Additionally, they learn how to edit and format content, upload supporting media such as illustrations and educational visuals, and integrate these into Wikimedia Commons to enhance the books' quality. The project will be implemented according to the planned schedule. In July, the focus will be on preparation and training. From August to September, training sessions and follow-up meetings will take place. Finally, in October, participants' written works will be compiled, and the final report will be completed. If the project involves partner organizations, logistical support and accommodation will be provided to invite them as volunteer trainers.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
Our primary target is individuals with an interest in reading, books, and writing who have reached the legal age in the following designated regions, grouped by island: 1. - East Java: Surabaya, Malang, Madura, and Jember
This project will collaborate with local communities outside the Wikimedia community in these 10 locations, including Indonesia Book Party, which operates in various areas such as Medan Book Party and Jember Book Party. Additionally, the project will involve Komunitas Ibu Profesional in each region, along with other potential communities or organizations interested in participating. Indonesia Book Party is a social community that promotes the joy of reading and enhances national literacy through interactive and collaborative activities. Ibu Profesional is a learning forum for mothers and future mothers to develop themselves through educational programs. After the in-person training, participants will join an online discussion group. We will record their usernames on the dashboard to track their contributions throughout the event and assess the training's impact on their skill development. After the program concludes, participants who are not yet part of a community will have the opportunity to join the WikiBuku Community, a local community in their respective regions, or WikiPerempuan Community for those seeking a broader network.
