6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The change I want to bring is to make Wikipedia readable in more human languages than are presently available for knowledge diversification and language preservation.

The challenges are the death of languages, especially among youths, and the absence of information in a native language that many understand.

This project aims to document the Berom language, which has over 1 million speakers, many of whom are literate in the language. Within the Nenzit region, the Berom language is the largest Plateau language in terms of speakers, but there is no Wikimedia project in that language. This project also aims to bridge the knowledge gap and increase language diversity in the Wikimedia arena.

The main approach is to use the model used for the Jju Wikipedia by the Tyap Wikimedians User Group to develop the Berom Wikipedia in collaboration with the Berom language translators and students in the higher institutions around Jos, Nigeria.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The planned activities for this event will include:

  • Orientation on Wikimedia projects and awareness creation.
  • Account creation for new users.
  • Content translations to Berom in the Wikimedia Incubator and Translatewiki.
  • Follow-up using our social media handle(s).

The project page link for this event is: https://w.wiki/DvDo

The target participants are the Berom language speakers within and around the University of Jos (UNIJOS), those recommended by the Berom Educational and Cultural Organization (BECO), with whom we are in talks on this event, and those who will honour our social media invitations to be present.

To engage participants, a Meta-Wiki page was created for the event where they can register as participants. Also, since the event will be in person, my team and I will put them through the basics of editing the Berom language in the Wikimedia Incubator and Translatewiki.

We have a group created on Telegram (https://t.me/Nenzitwiki) to coordinate the event before, during, and after the event. We shall communicate with these editors using that social media channel and others.
