Hausa are the largest ethnic group of West Africa, with a population of some 53 million.Hausa is also used as a lingua franca across West Africa, making it one of Africa’s biggest languages.Hausa is also spoken in diaspora by traders, scholars and immigrants in urban areas of West Africa and the only Nigerian language that is broadcast by foreign stations.Hausa has a number of geographical dialects like many indigenous languages around the world, marked by differences in pronunciation and vocabulary.Dialects of Hausa have been classified into Three major dialects namely Eastern Hausa dialects (Kananci, Zazzaganci, Hadejanci and Gudduranci),Western Hausa dialects ( Sakkwatanci, Zamfaranci, Gobiranci and Kabanci) and Northern Hausa dialects (Dauranci, Gumalanci,Katsinanci and Damagaranci). There are some knowledge on these dialects that are not covered in Wikipedia projects. Our aim is to improve the documentation of these dialect in Wikipedia projects (Wikipedia,Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wiktionary) through creating and improving articles about History, Cultural Heritage, Tradition, Regions, Ethnicity, Clothing, Foods ,Origin, Famous peoples and Kingdoms of these dialects in Hausa Wikipedia and adding more information, reliable references and content to the existing articles. Hausa dialects have differences in pronunciation like for example Western Dialect they pronounce the sound (ts) as (tc) like (Hatsi they pronounce it as Hatci, Tsimi as Tcimi, Tsere as Tcere,Watse as Watce and so on) and Northern Dialect pronounce word like (Shirwa as Hirwa, Farashi as Farahi, Shekara as hekara and so on) and Eastern dialect use to pronounce words like (Harbi as Halbi, Marka as Malka ,Warwara as Walwala and so on) so this project will include uploading of pronunciation of words(audio files) in different dialects to help learners to be proficient in other dialects and include uploading of images base on these dialects, like their historical places, Clothes,Foods,Famous peoples and kingdoms in Wikimedia Commons. This project will also include improvement of Hausa Wiktionary words by including dialects like Sakkwatanci Zamfarnci Katsinaci and Dauranci words under a section to help learners understand Hausa words in comparison to different dialects. Dialects are essential because they are part of our identity. Also this project is important because it will gather some knowledge in these dialects that will attract Hausa speakers,Hausa learners and language enthusiasts around the world to seek knowledge and gives their contributions in Wikipedia projects. Also it's increase the language diversity as well as Wikipedia readability especially from the Hausa speakers around the World.
3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
1-Creating of 500 articles base on these dialects about their History, Cultural Heritage, Tradition, Regions, Ethnicity, Clothing, Foods ,Origin, Famous peoples and Kingdoms in Hausa Wikipedia and improving the existing ones 2-Linking the 500 new article in Wikidata 3- Uploading of 1000 Hausa words(audio files) in different dialects in Wikimedia Commons. As we explained, Hausa dialects have differences in pronunciation so these will help learners to be proficient in other dialects. 4-Uploading of 200 images base on these dialects, like their historical places, Clothes,Foods,Famous peoples and kingdoms in Wikimedia Commons 5-Inclusion of some of the dialects like Sakkwatanci,Zamfarnci, Katsinaci and Dauranci under a section in Hausa Wiktionary to help learners understand Hausa words in comparison to different dialects 6-Linking of the uploaded audio files in Hausa Wiktionary so that learners will be able to pronounce the words properly
