Our user group is not new—it has been active for nearly a decade. However, as we set out to revive it and implement our plans for the GSF in 2024, we witnessed firsthand the significant impact of having an active user group in a country with a large number of dedicated Wiki contributors and passionate newcomers. This was evident in the remarkable efforts made by Iraqi editors last year, where we contributed 16% of the new articles added to Arabic Wikipedia.

This year, our focus will be on ensuring the sustainability of our user group through:

  • Strengthening offline connections by celebrating the group's 10th anniversary.
  • Expanding offline activities beyond the capital, Baghdad, to Mosul, where the highest number of contributors are based.
  • Maintaining active participation in global contests.
  • Enhancing Wikipedia content about Iraq through dedicated local contests.
  • Developing a strong social media presence and refining our brand identity to establish a professional representation of Wikimedia projects and Wikimedia Iraq.
  • Exploring new avenues for collaboration and securing local funding opportunities.

By focusing on these areas, we aim to:

  • Bridge the gap between existing and new members, fostering stronger connections within the user group.
  • Engage with newcomers and cultivate new organizers in different cities, helping us expand our reach across the country.
  • Dedicate efforts to identifying local and international partnerships that provide logistical and financial support for our current and future initiatives.

Additional information

[edit]
22. In this optional space you can add any other additional information about your proposal or organization that you think can help us when reviewing your proposal. (optional)

Dear Reviewers, we would like you to take into consideration these points:

  • Iraqi Wikimedians is not a new user group—it has been active for 10 years in a country with a strong Wiki community and many experienced editors.
  • This funding request builds on past success, leveraging the achievements of last year’s grant and a decade of experience within our user group.
  • We have a growing community of experienced Wikimedians and enthusiastic newcomers. Managing and channeling this energy effectively is both an opportunity and a challenge, as we strive to enhance content quality and ensure the long-term sustainability of our user group.
  • Through this year, we would like to invest more in the human resources we have and support our members, especially the newcomers to involve in the organizational efforts, make sure of their consistency and sustainability to continue on the efforts we spent last yeas, so next year we can expand through the newcomers that we have now.
  • The official exchange rate is approximately 14% lower than the local market rate, which impacts the real value of funds received.

Last year’s GSF was particularly challenging due to the limitations imposed on our proposal. While we understand this may have been due to it being our first GSF, we remained committed, working to reunite the user group and prove its active presence, and we hope that this year we get the trust of the committee, the foundation, and our regional community.
