History
[edit]Wikimedia LGBT+ is a Wikimedia Movement Affiliate and international, multilingual community. The Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group became a Wikimedia Affiliate in 2014, and was an early model for minority population-based thematic organizations. Wikimedia LGBT+ organizers have been centrally involved in campaigns and initiatives to increase diversity in the Wikimedia movement for 10+ years. Wikimedia LGBT+ members have organized a range of projects, from improving Wikipedia articles, Commons, and Wikidata, to participating in Wikimedia policy discussions. The User Group maintains communication channels (Telegram groups, mailing lists, etc.) and organizes a monthly community meeting to engage in content discussions, develop projects, and support and celebrate LGBT+ Wikimedians. Wikimedia LGBT+ has organized numerous conferences, events, and campaigns. Core organizers developed Wiki Loves Pride in 2014, a campaign of photography events, edit-a-thons, and other content improvement projects. Wikimedia LGBT+ has organized Queering Wikipedia events in 2021, 2022, and 2023, with ~200 participants attending QW2022, and ~400 participants attending QW2023. We have also facilitated LGBT+-focused GLAM initiatives (edit-a-thons, mass uploads to Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata/metadata projects, etc.), and promoted participation in LGBT+ focused Wiki Loves Monuments projects, Wiki Loves Libraries, WikiProject LGBT studies, WikiProject Medicine, and WikiProject AIDS across multiple languages.
Programs, Approaches, & Strategies
[edit]We are seeking funding for operational support necessary to sustain and grow our organization’s capacity to improve Wikimedia project coverage of LGBT+ topics across languages, and promote diversity in Wikimedia by organizing spaces of support and cross-cultural conversation for LGBT+ Wikimedia contributors and allies. Our main strategies are: 1) building our administrative capacity, 2) developing safe space support for LGBT+ Wikimedians, 3) organizing program monitoring and reporting 4) seeking external funding 5) language accessibility and translation and 6) Wiki Loves Pride
1. Building our administrative capacity
[edit]Wikimedia LGBT+ has identified a need to sustain our organization by setting up formal staff positions to design and oversee administrative workflows and membership communications. In order to establish the sustainability of our organization, we plan to focus on building our administrative capacity through hiring qualified individuals, training leadership for success, creating workflows, and establishing accountability measures. Creating a management structure for our existing and future programs, and effectively compensating administrators will help us meet the demands of our members to serve as a central hub for international dialogues about LGBT+ topics and Wikimedia platforms and to gather data to understand our impact. Focusing on strategically building governance structures, policies and procedures, and workflows is necessary to ensure our organizers have the resources they need to lead programs, work with membership to engage in needfinding, program development, reporting and evaluation, and long-term vision planning. This proposal will fund contractors for translations, graphic design/report publishing, membership functions, and technical support. We will draw from our existing network of previous contractors and community members to fill these temporary positions. The work of the contractors will provide impact to our programs, and enable us to document our work in accessible formats for funders and public audiences. The Executive Director will work with the Board to monitor staff progress. The Membership Coordinator will oversee membership registration and elections. Administrative changes will be formalized by the Board, and will involve soliciting feedback from our membership about strategic planning and the design of our governance structures. We aim to produce documentation that could be adapted for other affiliates also working to strengthen governance and share this documentation with affiliates in community channels.
2. Developing safe space support for LGBT+ wikimedians
[edit]Building our capacity to offer response and support for safe space complaints to protect the safety of our membership is another element of our strategy and work to uphold the Wikimedia Universal Code of Conduct. Our intention is that establishing minimal safety measures for our Wikimedia LGBT+ community can increase volunteer participation in community citizenship and governance. Providing safety measures for safe space complaints will help our community accomplish other strategic priorities with less fear of danger and more confidence in safety support in the likely case of threats. In order to respond to the safe space requests we receive, we require administrative support resources to engage in long-term planning, including workflow design. A new intervention we would like to try is permanently staffing minimal safe space support so that we can begin collecting records to understand the problem. We aim to prepare a risk database for organization risks and conduct risk assessments of safe space support protocols as we design them. Our limited resources put limitations on our organization’s ability to assess the needs of our membership as participation scales. Our Executive Director will lead the team in the design of a harm reduction plan, involving conducting a needs assessment, building our safe space workflows, and creating community resources.
We currently hold regular meetings with WMF Human Rights to share feedback and develop strategy to keep LGBT+ Wikimedians safe, and provide feedback on WMF activity such as advising on the Wikimedia Foundation Universal Code of Conduct and inclusion, safety and risk assessment at Wikimanias. We also maintain contacts with other WMF teams including Trust and Safety/Community Resilience & Sustainability. Increasing our administrative capacity will allow us to move away from relying on volunteers to handle this vital work, and increase the quality and sustainability of our work by adequately compensating administrative work that goes beyond what volunteers should be asked to do. With increased support, we additionally plan to develop accessible and privacy-centered ways to survey our community of LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies and gather feedback about the issues they might be facing to help inform movement strategy and agenda-setting.
We are building towards the design of conflict management and prevention initiatives to serve our members, focusing on action and education that will prevent future harm. We will continue to provide volunteer and community-building support to LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies through the existing monthly User Group meetings and additional skillshares and workshops for volunteers and community organizers. Staffing User Group meetings with facilitators and translators will allow us to gather community ideas for organizational improvement and program strategy.
3. Organizing program monitoring and reporting
[edit]Organizing basic annual reporting is the next strategic priority. Our organization needs good annual reporting because reports are foundational for seeking external funding from non-Wikimedia Foundation sponsors. Those sponsors would provide programmatic funding to LGBT+ programs in the Wikimedia platform, if only we could demonstrate impact. We know among ourselves that the Wikimedia platform is the world's most requested, published, accessed, and consulted source of information for LGBT+ topics. We can encourage sponsors that funding Wikipedia is the best way to advance their goals for promoting diversity, but to do that, we need to design a way to present our community programs and generate impact metrics. This is particularly difficult for LGBT+ content for reasons including safety concerns among our contributors; the unusually broad scope of content which we need to track including programs, events, Wikipedia articles, photos, datasets, and policy discussions; the need to do multilingual user contribution tracking; and the extraordinary politicization and need for community consensus which is customary to address when anyone speaks for LGBT+ communities. Although Wikimedia LGBT+ already has a large Wikimedia community, with robust content development and audience engagement, we need to measure and report this with care and in anticipation that whatever we say will be examined and researched in the long-term, and beyond the normal scrutiny that other Wikimedia programs have received. Improving programs monitoring and evaluation will also better position us to share what’s worked with other affiliates and community groups.
4. Seeking external funding
[edit]Another strategic priority of Wikimedia LGBT+ is seeking external (non-Wikimedia Foundation) funding. Opportunities for applying for funding include calls for proposals which specifically target LGBT+ organizations and other proposals which are not LGBT+ specific, but which promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by favoring proposals which incorporate LGBT+ sub-programs. Wikimedia LGBT+ will survey the funding environment, design reusable arguments which this organization or anyone else can use to seek those funds, and then apply for this funding for programs and operational support. With the requested WMF support, we will develop administration, documentation, and annual reports that will help Wikimedia LGBT+ successfully apply for and receive external financial support. We further hope to share knowledge about funding opportunities and strategies with our colleagues around the world, including with Wikiproyecto LGBT+, as well as individual members who want to do LGBT+-related Wikimedia projects, such as hosting Wiki Loves Pride events or developing research or tools relevant to our community, such as conflict transformation and resolution protocols. Our work to secure external funding might also be of interest to other affiliates, who we can share knowledge with by documenting our progress and presenting at community meetings. Our hope is that by using Wikimedia Foundation sponsorship to develop our administrative base, we can gain even more support for our work from other sources.
5. Language accessibility and translation
[edit]Language accessibility and translation are core strategic approaches to deepen our capacity to draw together diverse communities to build deeper cross-cultural understandings of the nuances of editing about LGBT+ topics on Wikimedia Platforms and being LGBT+ in the Wikimedia movement. We have fostered discussions among our membership at User Group meetings and Queering Wikipedia about best practices for decentering Western languages and cultural norms as default categories for global conversations and aim to create additional learning opportunities to discuss the tensions between decolonial frameworks and human rights frameworks in our LGBT+ focused programs. We have also worked with translators to provide access to our events and conferences, as well as captioning translation for public video documentation. For our open positions, we intend to recruit qualified individuals with a preference for bilingual and multilingual professionals already familiar with working within Wikimedia communities. We have an existing network of translator consultants we have worked with for past programming. We will also be consulting with Spanish translators for User Group meetings and workshops to provide access to community members. Translators will also help produce accessible reports and documentation for funders and public education.
6. Wiki Loves Pride
[edit]Wiki Loves Pride is an annual campaign to improve LGBT+ content across Wikimedia projects and advance equity and diversity in the Wikimedia movement. Wiki Loves Pride activities primarily take place between June and October, the months when communities around the world traditionally celebrate Pride. Infrastructure for Wiki Loves Pride was created in 2013. The year 2024 marks 10 years of Wiki Loves Pride, with the first global campaign events in 2014 and every subsequent year since. Wiki Loves Pride is part of a tradition of successful content campaigns created by Wikimedia community members. Wikimedia LGBT+ has had experience and success with supervising campaigns which invite anyone to create a node event, while offering a central hub for node support.
The Wiki Loves Pride campaign was created to recognize the value of contributing LGBT+ resources to Wikimedia and the work of LGBT+ Wikimedians in combating systemic bias, but organizers face the challenges of limited administrative resources among our community for facilitating impactful international, multilingual projects and events and documenting the work. We are seeking funding to tackle this limitation by supporting program coordinators who can organize Wiki Loves Pride events to celebrate LGBT+ culture and history, and promote free knowledge. If implemented, Wiki Loves Pride organizers will have much-needed resources for their time engaging in valuable global diversity work to improve key gaps in the encyclopedia.
By creating Program Coordinator positions in English and Spanish that will work together to help facilitate distributed, Node events and oversee collaboration across languages, we can compensate them for the administrative work that goes beyond what ordinary volunteers can reasonably be expected to accomplish. Wiki Loves Pride organizers will be able to document the outcomes of this campaign to ensure lasting impact (see en:Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Pride/2024, https://w.wiki/9d54). English and Spanish Coordinators will be working in close collaboration and will be supervised by the Wikimedia LGBT+ governance team. In addition, by incentivising participation across languages with prizes, we can build upon the monthly achievements of the Spanish-language Wikiproyecto LGBT+ across the 2 main languages of the User Group. - 12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)
Partners are important to the success of our organization, and have supported our past projects, such as Queering Wikipedia 2021, 2022 and 2023. Wikimedia LGBT+ has a 10-year history of fostering relationships with organizations, including Wikimedia community organizations such as Les sans pagEs, Art+Feminism, and Whose Knowledge?, and cultural partnerships with GLAMs and other institutions such as The Smithsonian National Museum of American History and New York Public Library. We also aim to expand partnerships with health organizations that share our mission to improve online health information relevant to LGBT+ communities. We have partnered with allied organizations to develop awareness of the impact of contributing to Wikimedia projects for issues including sexual and reproductive health, transgender health issues, and mental health needs around harassment and anti-LGBT+ discrimination, in addition to human rights, fighting disinformation, celebrating arts and culture, and education. Our focus on cross-cultural collaboration is key to the success of our partnerships, and WMF funding to support translation will help us strengthen our capacity to communicate and form relationships with global partners. A significant partnership we are working to expand is collaboration between the English Wikimedia LGBT+ hub and Wikiproyecto:LGBT, a highly active group of Wikimedians organizing content development and other initiatives across the Spanish-speaking world (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiproyecto:LGBT).
We have also dedicated valuable volunteer efforts to meet with teams at the Wikimedia Foundation, including WMF Human Rights Team and Trust and Safety (and Community Resilience and Sustainability more widely) to share mission-relevant feedback and advising. We have been regularly meeting with the Human Rights team since fall 2024, to discuss strategies to keep LGBT+ Wikimedians safe, and provide service recommendations. Our Board members have also helped shape WMF policy, serving as advisors on the most recent drafting of the Wikimedia Foundation Universal Code of Conduct. Further, have facilitated opportunities for WMF Board members and staff including WMF Research to dialogue with the Wikimedia LGBT+ community at Queering Wikipedia events.
Support from the WMF will be essential in the development of collaboration with additional partners and subject-matter experts. Potential partners and funders have expressed willingness to deepen their relationship with Wikimedia projects if we can provide them with metrics about the impact of LGBT+ content on Wikimedia platforms and demonstrate tools to gather metrics about impact on Wikimedia projects. With devoted funding, we can create materials to present tools and opportunities for Wikimedia engagement to organizations with different areas of expertise and different regional audiences. Having an Executive Director and Membership Coordinator will help us establish consistency and develop strategy to make partnerships possible. We will continue to seek partners for new and upcoming projects on an ongoing basis.

Additional information about Wiki Loves Pride
[edit]The target participants of Wiki Loves Pride are LGBT+ Wikimedians, as well as anyone who wants to improve Wikimedia project coverage of gender and LGBT+ related topics and promote diversity. Participants may include editors from any Wikimedia project, and edits may involve improving Wikipedia articles, uploading images related to LGBT+ culture and history to Wikimedia Commons, or adding Wikidata items, for example.
A key aspect of Wiki Loves Pride is event organizing. We aim to encourage people to organize node events internationally, and across cultures and languages. Participants may include other Wikimedia Affiliates and Wikimedia projects, as well as non-Wikimedia affiliated host organizations that want to host Wiki Loves Pride events. Project Coordinators will create event resources, including organizing materials, on-Wiki documentation, and graphic design to support campaign node events. A survey will be created for event organizers to follow up with the results of Wiki Loves Pride events, focusing on areas for future improvement.
We are also planning on engaging contributors by holding a Wiki Loves Pride Wikipedia editing contest in the tradition of existing editing contests supervised by Wikimedia Affiliates and community groups. The main goal of the editing contest is improving the quality of the existing articles and creating new Wikipedia articles on LGBT+ topics. For the contest, the interested users will have to sign up their participation and contribute within the specified period. At the end of the contest, a jury of experienced Wikimedia LGBT+ and Wikiproyecto LGBT+ volunteers, will review the contributions of all participants and select the best three participants who will get rewarded.
Wiki Loves Pride has been promoted and discussed in the active communication channels Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group maintains to engage in content discussions, develop projects, and support and celebrate LGBT+ Wikimedians. We plan to post about Wiki Loves Pride on User Group channels in multiple languages to circulate the word to potential event organizers, offer campaign support, and encourage participants.
We also will reach out to organizers of other Affiliates that share similar goals to combat systemic bias on Wikimedia projects, and encourage those Affiliates to repost our messages. Community meetings in English and Spanish and organized by Wikimedia LGBT+ volunteers, (See Wikimedia LGBT+/Calendar, https://w.wiki/9d5M). We will put the Wiki Loves Pride 2024 campaign on the agenda of upcoming monthly User Group meetings to support to LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies and encourage creative event planning. Additional meetings and skillshares will be scheduled to coordinate between organizers.
Wikimedia LGBT+ leadership initiated monthly meetings with WMF Human Rights to share feedback and develop strategy to keep LGBT+ Wikimedians safe, and provide feedback on WMF activity such as advising on implementing the Wikimedia Foundation Universal Code of Conduct on the ground. We will continue to seek the guidance of WMF Human Rights to navigate risk and safety concerns that may arise during the course of this project. We also have regular meetings with Trust & Safety to discuss issues as they arise.
Over 100+ Wiki Loves Pride events have been organized since the campaign started in 2014, and the project has been discussed and presented in public forums by Wikimedia LGBT+ organizers over the past decade, including Wikimania, WikiConference North America, etc. (see en:Category:Wiki Loves Pride, https://w.wiki/9d5S). This campaign has previously generated interest from the press. Program Coordinators will work with project advisors to respond to press inquiries that may arise and document the results in project reporting. The focus of any interactions with the press will be promoting the work done by campaign participants and shining a light on the contributions of Wikimedians to share information and promote free knowledge.
