Introduction As an organization, our goal is to equip the youth with valuable skills through volunteering, particularly by contributing to Wikimedia projects. We believe that these projects offer a unique platform for youth to acquire skills in research, writing, and digital literacy while contributing to the global knowledge commons. By implementing our programs, we aim to:

Increase Wikimedia content, particularly related to Africa, Build the capacity of volunteers to become active, long-term contributors to Wikimedia projects, Strengthen and expand our partnerships with organizations aligned with our mission.

Program 1: GOIF and Partners Workshop and Edit-a-thon Series This program involves collaboration with key partners—Nubuke, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)—to address content and gender gaps on Wikimedia platforms. Our partners have been helpful in previous projects https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/goif_2024_annual_projects/programs. Through a series of workshops, edit-a-thons, and contests, we will continue contribute to content creation, strengthen our relationship and expose partners and community to capacity-building opportunities, and foster a strong sense of community ownership for sustainable growth.

Approach Content Contributions: We are driven by the need to bridge content gaps, particularly in topics related to Africa on to Wikidata, Wikipedia, and Wikimedia Commons. Workshops & Edit-a-thons: Organize 24 workshops and 6 contests to contribute to 3,500 Wikidata items (2,000 improved, 1,500 newly created) and 100 Wikipedia articles (100 improved, 20 newly created). Capacity Building: Introduce participants to the wider Wikimedia movement, equipping them with the skills and tools necessary to thrive as volunteers. We aim to graduate 10 editors from the Africa Growth Pilot program, ensuring long-term engagement with the community. Community Engagement: Involve local communities and partner organizations in the collaborative development of projects that align with shared goals. Monthly Community Calls: Facilitate monthly calls to encourage knowledge exchange, collaboration, and mentorship among volunteers.

Strategies Campaign Participation: Engage in campaigns like 1Lib1Ref and Art+Feminism to contribute to global content initiatives while expanding local participation. Capacity-Building Support: Encourage participants to take advantage of additional learning opportunities within and outside the Wikimedia movement. Inclusive and Friendly Events: Create a welcoming environment for all participants, with special incentives for female editors to address the gender gap. Attend aligned events of our partners and potential partners: Strengthen our partnerships with existing organizations (Nubuke, Ghana Library Authority, CSIR) and explore new collaborations that will introduce fresh topics and bring in new partners. Delegated Leadership: Assign experienced community members to lead monthly calls and coordinate activities.

Challenges Content Gap: There needs to be more information related to Ghana and Africa on Wikimedia platforms. By participating in campaigns like A+F and 1lib 1 ref, we can have a much more focused content drive that will draw in interested individuals to help in bridging the gap. Gender Gap: Female participation in Wikimedia projects is lower than that of men, and strategies such as participating in campaigns and ensuring a friendly and inclusive workshop and community will all help draw in volunteers, particularly females. Volunteer Retention: We sometimes lose volunteers after initial engagement due to challenges at the event. By focusing on capacity building and community involvement as well as delegated leadership, we aim to retain more volunteers through sustained involvement in Wikimedia activities, which may not necessarily be editing on Wikipedia. Partnership Development: Forming and maintaining partnerships can be challenging. We are working to strengthen our relationships with existing partners while seeking new collaborations that will help us diversify our projects and expand our reach, therefore our strategy of supporting our partners with our presence and participating in aligned events.

Program 2: Democratising and Promoting Access to Supreme Court Cases through Wikipedia This program focuses on documenting Supreme Court cases on Wikipedia to improve public access to important legal information. It builds on our initial efforts, which include contributing Supreme Court-related(https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Global_Open_Initiative_Foundation/GOIF_Supreme_Court_of_Ghana_Cases_Contest) items to Wikidata and developing a web app for easier access.

Approach: Organize edit-a-thons to create 10 and update 10 articles on Ghana's Supreme Court cases on Wikipedia. Conduct quality assurance testing of the web app to ensure its functionality and accuracy.

Strategies: Educate law students on how to use and contribute to the web app. Collect user feedback to refine the app and improve its usability. Engage tech professionals to further develop and enhance the web app.

Challenges Addressed: Access to Legal Information: There is currently limited access to Ghanaian Supreme Court cases on Wikipedia, hindering public and academic research. By introducing students to the app and how they can contribute to it they can access legal information. Low Tech Involvement: There is a limited involvement of tech professionals in the Ghanaian Wikimedia landscape, which affects the development of user-friendly platforms by our initiative of engaging tech professionals we provide a platform to engage and be involved in such spaces.

Program 3: Documenting and Preserving Ghana and Africa’s Culture on Twi Wikipedia Through the AfroCuration Initiative, under the theme: “WHO WE ARE: Showcasing Diversities in African Art and Aesthetics,” this project aims to highlight and showcase the diverse forms of African art, ranging from traditional to contemporary. Participants will create Wikipedia articles that provide insight into African art forms, artists, adinkra symbols of Ghana, the elaborate wood carvings in West Africa, colorful textiles, and ceremonial masks in Central Africa. A more detailed explanation of the project can be found [here].

Approach We will organize four online workshops, six(6) physical workshops, and an AfroCuration conference. Each event will focus on creating and improving content across Wikimedia platforms, as outlined below:

Wikimedia Commons: We aim to upload hundred (100) high-quality images of artworks and hundred 100 Twi pronunciation recordings. This will enhance the educational value of art-related content for Twi-speaking communities and the global audience.

Wikidata: We will translate 500 descriptions of artworks from English to Twi, making cultural and artistic knowledge more accessible for Twi speakers.

Wikipedia: Collaborating with academics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), we will select thesis topics to create or improve 400 new Wikipedia articles in Twi. This will enhance academic resources and encourage students to engage with their linguistic heritage.

AfroCuration Main Event: This event will bring together artists, art enthusiasts, researchers, local language experts, and Wikipedia editors to contribute knowledge and expertise on African culture. Through this, we aim to create 100 new articles and challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about African art.

Strategies In 2023, we hosted the AfroCuration main event in Ghana and it was sponsored by Moleskin Foundation. During the main event we collaborated with 4 Wikimedia language communities to publish articles in these languages, this is the link to the meta page https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/AfroCuration_Ghana_2023/Editathon and links to all the Tv interviews, online Publications, pictures and YouTube videos of our 2023 AfroCuration main event https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Dbskcb9q9KJ31vl6ca1rmOyKfF5UUo3B/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=110917601236558475573&rtpof=true&sd=true For this year, we will; Collaborate with five Wikimedia language communities (Moore, Dagbani, Kusaal, Ewe, Nzema) as well as non-Wikimedia organizations such as Open Knowledge Ghana and Living Heritage Ghana to ensure inclusiveness and representation of thier culture. Partner with institutions like the KNUST Art Department and involve five linguistic experts to enhance content accuracy.

Challenges Addressed Diversity and Accessibility: Artworks are often described in major global languages, limiting their accessibility to non-English speakers. By translating content into Twi and , we bridge this gap, making knowledge more inclusive for Twi-speaking communities. Improved Content: Many artworks lack visual representation and pronunciation guides in Twi, which limits their accessibility. By adding high-resolution images and accurate Twi pronunciations, we create a more inclusive and engaging resource. In addition, by engaging with the five linguistic experts we further ensure the content's accuracy. Clearing Misconceptions: There’s a prevailing notion that some African artifacts have negative connotations. In addition to the above, certain African art forms are underappreciated because they don't conform to Western standards of fine art. This project aims to expose and celebrate the richness of African art, fostering a deeper appreciation of “WHO WE ARE.” Hence the collaboration of other language communities

Oral History Documentation: Bead Making Documentation Beads hold deep historical and cultural importance in Ghana, particularly among the Krobo ethnic group. Traditionally, as girls reach the age of puberty, they start wearing waist beads given to them by their mothers. This practice signifies their transition into womanhood during the initiation ceremony called “Dipo” in Krobo culture. We aim to document the history and process of bead-making, capturing the intricate craftsmanship involved. The project will result in a video documentary and the upload of 100 images of the tools and equipment used in the bead-making process.

Approach: Embark on a field trip to document bead-making on Wikimedia Commons by providing high-quality videos and images. Improve the related Wikipedia articles by adding visual and descriptive content to enrich knowledge.

Strategies: Field Research: Conduct in-depth field research in the Eastern Region of Ghana, focusing on bead-making communities. Documentation: Record the bead-making process and conduct interviews with artisans, community elders, and cultural experts. Content Upload: Upload visual documentation (videos, images) to Wikimedia Commons and update related Wikipedia articles. Partnerships for Amplification: Collaborate with a media organization to showcase the documentary and the work of Wikimedians during Ghana Month in March. This partnership will help amplify the project’s visibility, raise public awareness, and foster community engagement. Bilingual Documentation: Create documentation in both English and local languages (such as Krobo and Twi) to broaden the accessibility and cultural reach of the project, ensuring that it resonates with both local and global audiences.

Challenges Addressed: Cultural Preservation: There is a lack of visual documentation on the bead-making process, which is integral to Ghana's cultural heritage. This tradition is also undergoing changes due to modernization, threatening its authenticity. By capturing and archiving the current practices, we provide a vital snapshot of these traditions before they are altered or lost. Limited Access to Cultural Knowledge: Many aspects of Ghanaian cultural heritage remain undocumented, leaving knowledge gaps in online repositories. Our bilingual documentation ensures that the information reaches a wider audience, including non-English speakers. Low Knowledge of the wiki movement and open initiatives: There is no doubt that some individuals do not know that they can contribute on wikipedia. Therefore by engaging with the media during the Ghana month we provide visibility for our work as wikimedians. Our previous engagement(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4gjfW7_pwg) with a Media house in Ghana not only increased viewership of the kente article but also provided visibility for the wiki movement.

Program 5: Wiki Clubs in Ghanaian Schools Following the successful establishment of Wiki Clubs at Heritage Christian University College, West End University, and Knutsford University and significant contributions by students on the African Games(https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Global_Open_Initiative/Wiki_Clubs_Project_2024_(1st_January_2024), this project aims to continue empowering university students and professionals in Ghana. The focus will be on the benefits of using Wikipedia and Wikidata for research and writing, fostering skills in writing, communication, and leadership. This initiative will contribute to the academic and personal growth of participants and enhance the quality and accessibility of open knowledge, particularly related to Ghanaian culture, history, and current events.

Approach Workshops and Training Sessions: Organize 54 hands-on workshops (9 events each in 6 universities) where students will learn to edit and create Wikipedia and Wikidata entries. These workshops will cover essential skills such as research, citation practices, and collaborative writing. Contests: Host 6 contests to encourage participation and content creation. These contests will stimulate students to contribute actively and produce high-quality content. Diverse Content Creation: Encourage students to write on underrepresented topics, such as women's achievements, regional cultures, and local history, to increase the diversity of available information on Wikipedia. Outreach and Awareness Campaigns: Launch campaigns on university campuses and across professional networks to promote the benefits of using Wikipedia and Wikidata, enhancing overall awareness.

Strategies Mentorship and Peer Learning: Assign experienced Wikipedia editors as mentors to support students in content creation and research. This will foster a peer-to-peer learning environment and provide guidance throughout the project. Leader Network: Establish a network of student leaders to promote ongoing engagement and leadership within the clubs. These leaders will help drive the project forward and encourage sustained participation. Support and Community Involvement: We intend to support students and involve them in organizing various events to help them understand the process of planning and executing initiatives. This involvement will build skills and a sense of ownership.

Challenges Addressed Limited Awareness: Many students and professionals lack knowledge about using Wikipedia and Wikidata for academic purposes. By establishing these clubs and organizing workshops, we aim to bridge this knowledge gap. Underrepresentation of Ghanaian Topics: There is a lack of comprehensive content about Ghanaian history, culture, and current events on Wikipedia. By guiding students to focus on these areas, the project will help close the knowledge gap and enhance the availability of local information. Retention of Contributors: Maintaining student participation after initial enthusiasm can be challenging. To address this, we will provide incentives, establish peer support structures, and create leadership opportunities within the clubs to sustain engagement.

Program 6: Nzema Workshops The Nzema Workshops project is dedicated to creating content in Nzema, an indigenous language spoken in Ghana and Ivory Coast. This initiative supports Wikimedia’s mission of preserving and promoting local languages. Building on previous successes with workshops conducted by the GOIF Twi team in collaboration with the Nzema department at the University of Education in Adjumako, the next phase aims to further popularize Nzema Wiki. This will involve organizing comprehensive training sessions for students to develop skills for creating Wikipedia pages in Nzema.

Approach Organize Workshops and Contests: Conduct six workshops and two contests to motivate and guide participants in creating and enhancing content in the Nzema language.

Strategies Collaborate with the Nzema Department: Partner with the Nzema department at the University of Education in Adjumako to leverage their expertise and resources. Host Contests: Use contests as a strategy to stimulate interest and increase content creation, fostering a competitive yet supportive environment for contributors.

Challenges Addressed Language Preservation: The risk of the Nzema language declining is addressed through comprehensive training sessions and workshops. These activities will help to promote the use of Nzema by increasing the quantity and quality of content available on Wikipedia, thereby supporting language preservation. Content Gaps: The lack of content in Nzema on Wikipedia is tackled by organizing contests and workshops. Contests will motivate participants to contribute, while workshops will provide the necessary skills and knowledge to produce high-quality content, filling existing gaps and improving the overall presence of Nzema content.

Aside from the strategies listed under each program, we will continue our practice of seeking feedback, noting any complaints and suggestions, and making improvements to ensure that every event is better than the last.

We will also maintain detailed records of participants, expenses, and other relevant information to ensure a seamless reporting process.
