13. What are the main objectives of the event?

The WikiConference is the national conference of Nigerian Wikimedians within Nigeria and diasporas. The primary aim of the conference is to promote the growth and sustainability of Wikimedia projects in Nigeria, enhance the growth and development of Wikimedia communities in the country, and foster good working relationships between these communities. It’s a platform for capacity building and development, Wikimedia skills acquisition, leadership, and knowledge sharing. This is the first edition of WikiConference Nigeria, and it will be held in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria between June 20 and 22, 2024.

The conference venue is Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, and the hotel where the conference will take place is within 1 hour of the airport (Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport). The event venue will be in the same hotel where the participants will be hosted.

90 full scholarships and 10 partial scholarships would be awarded. The full scholarship would cover conference registration costs, travel, and accommodation. A partial scholarship would cover the conference registration cost and accommodation only.

Scholarship recipients will be selected based on clearly defined and transparent criteria, taking into account:

  • The involvement of the candidate in the Wikimedia movement and Wikimedia projects,
  • The involvement of the candidate within their communities to promote Wikimedia projects,

Applications for scholarships would be published, and community members would be encouraged to apply. The application would be open for at least two weeks. A scholarship committee would be set up to review applications and score applicants. At the end of the review, applicants would be notified about the status of their application. While members of recognized user groups in Nigeria will be prioritized, all applicants will have equal chances of being selected for the scholarship.

This is a conference organized in collaboration with existing established User Groups including the Hausa Wikimedians User Group, Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, Igbo Wikimedians User Group and the Tyap Wikimedians User Group. These groups would be involved in all facet of the conference including the following

  • Facilitate and coordinate the scholarship committee.
