Proposal
[edit]1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?
Amical Wikimedia is a non-profit organisation recognised as a Wikimedia Thematic Organisation, focused on Catalan language and culture. Our mission is to make the sum of all knowledge available in Catalan, and all knowledge about Catalan culture available in every language. We also work to make all this accessible through free knowledge and volunteering.
2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?
Our objective is for the sum of all human knowledge to be freely available in Catalan, and for all knowledge about Catalan culture to be available to everyone in any language.
3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
Support all the activities that the volunteers propose and suggest initiatives whenever they solve any of these approaches:
- the strengthening of the community among the volunteers
- improving accessibility for users of Wikimedia projects (making it easier to edit, consult news, configure devices in Catalan, etc.)
- improve communication and initiatives around the Wikimedia movement
- promote the improvement of content
- increase readings
4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
1) Community:
- Increase the visibility of the entity
- Do more activities with active members
- Search for new collaborators
- Strengthen the presence of free knowledge in the field of education
2) Accessibility
- Continue making editing help videos
3) Communication
- Promote a report on the history of free knowledge and Amical
- Updating the static information of Amical's blog
- Regular posts on Amical's blog (12)
- Making our voice heard against regulations that go against Amical's principles
- A quarterly press release on activities or achievements
4) Content
- Promote Bibliowikis' online workshops
- Do a project each quarter creating women's articles
- Activities related to Wikidata and Wikicommons as a support to Viquipèdia
5) Readers
- Commission a study on web positioning and possible measures to improve the visibility of Viquipèdia
- Partnerships and collaborations with other entities and institutions promoting the Catalan language, Catalan culture and free knowledge
5. Do you want to apply for multi-year funding?
No
5.1 If yes, provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan?
- N/A
6. Please include a timeline (operational calendar) for your proposal.
7. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
Yes, we do. The members of the Board are also the coordinators of the main projects, with the help of volunteers and currently our employee. We also team up sometimes with other entities (e.g. universities) that align with our values and help us achieve our objectives.
Among our volunteers, there are the usual workshop conductors (Konkordia, Docosong, Amadalvarez, Quelet,...), those who lead yearly projects (F3raN, Lluis tgn, Paucabot, Tiputini, TaronjaSatsuma,...), and those others who lead all-year projects (Leptictidium, Xavier Dengra,...) or occasional projects.
8. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.
Content Gender gap, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial
8.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
Gender gap: creating projects about women's articles on diverse topics during the whole year.
Language: we try Catalan to be the preferred language in our projects, with projects such as the Viquimarató de la Llengua Catalana (Catalan Language Editathon), collaboration with administrations, etc.
Cultural background: promote all aspects of the Catalan culture that exist in the seven Catalan-speaking territories (Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Land of València, Andorra, Northern Catalonia, La Franja, and L'Alguer). We collaborate with other entities, such as universities, governments, cultural organisations, etc.
9. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Open Technology
10. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities? Please note, we had previously asked about inclusion and diversity in terms of CONTENTS, in this question we are asking about the diversity of PARTICIPANTS. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.
Gender Identity, Linguistic / Language, Age
11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?
Training volunteers and helping them take a step forward; empowering them by telling them that if they do a project they will have our support.
Organising dynamization activities to strengthen the community (example: the Wikimeet, where there are workshops open to everyone and even some are special to help beginners and encourage them to become regular Wikipedians).
Communication and diffusion of activities and news is also very important, so that everyone knows what we are doing.
We do this by using their language and promoting projects in related entities (universities, etc.), and we try to retain them with communication (newsletter, etc.), with training and workshops, activities,...
12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?
Until 2022 we had our own code of conduct. Currently we have the UCoC, we have translated it into Catalan, diffused it, and now we are ready to act in consequence if there is any non-compliance. From now on, we will try to include it in all Amical wikiprojects and make it reach the places where the wikiprojects are hosted.
13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?
Yes
13.1 If yes, please tell us about these connections online and offline and how you have let Wikimedia communities know about this proposal.
We will work with everyone who shares our objectives in each of the projects to join efforts, as we have always done. Wikiprojects such as "Viquimarató Dies Internacionals" (International Days Editathon, with Wikimedia Spain, Wikimedia Portugal, and the Wikipedias in Basque, Galician, and Asturian languages) or "Viquimarató de la Llengua Catalana" (Catalan Language Editathon, with the University of Lisbon and Wikimedia Portugal), and Wikimedia Land of Valencia carries out activities that are at the same time shared by Amical Wikimedia and by Wikimedia Spain.
14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?
Yes
14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.
Our usual partners are the institutions of the Catalan-speaking territories -Generalitat de Catalunya, Govern d’Andorra, Generalitat Valenciana, Govern de les Illes Balears, Govern d’Aragó, Government Delegation of the Generalitat de Catalunya in Italy, and the House of the Generalitat de Catalunya in Perpinyà- regarding the language, institutions such as Adifolk regarding folklore, libraries (Bibliowikis and GLAM), museums and archives (GLAM), universities, etc.
15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?
16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.
- We believe there are no appreciable external risks. As for internal risks, yes there could be, given that a change of Board is expected at the end of this year. However, the strategic lines of the entity are agreed upon and the plan we are presenting is fairly consistent, with the exception of some elements that we think the new Board will want to implement.
17. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of three options that most apply.
Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Ensure Equity in Decision-making, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development
18. Please state if your organization or group has a Strategic Plan that can help us further understand your proposal. You can also upload it here.
