Grants:PEG/Wikimedia Nigeria User Group/Wikipedia at 15 Celebration in Nigeria
Goal
[edit]The goal of this initiative includes
- To mark the 15th birthday of Wikipedia in Nigeria
- To recruit long-term valuable editors
- To create a long-term relationship with academic insttutions
- Nigerian students and academics are not aware of the model of Wikipedia. They are not aware of the fact that articles on Wikipedia are written and edited by people like them. We aim to create awareness about the model of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]- Our activities will begin on Friday, 15th January, 2016 which mark the birth of Wikipedia. On this day, there will be a session about the history of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement. There will be a special session for the celebration of Wikipedia @15. The event will include a general meeting, story telling, launch and Wikipedia15 cake cutting. There will be a session for discussion about the two workshops and the article written competition. There will be a session dedicated to other competitions and events such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Cuisine etc and finaly there will be a session for discussion to plan future events and the future of the movement in Nigeria and to discusses about possible collaborations with various institutions.
- On Saturday, 16th January 2016 will mark the first workshop. Few minutes to the end of the workshop for that day, one or two Nigeria-related articles will be created and another one will be promoted from stub to C-class. This will help to reduce any shock or fear of editing Wikipedia for the first time. After the workshop, we will provide online mentoring for the student before the second workshop which will take place on Thursday, 28 January 2015.
- On Thursday, 28 January 2015, will mark the second workshop and the commencement of the article writing contest which will last for a period of 1 months, from 28 January 2015 to 29 February 2015. During this period we will provide both offline and online mentorship for the participants. We will add all the participants to our mailing list, where we will announce the winners of the contest. We will also call them on phone as well as leaving a congratulatory message on their talk page. We will send the prize and certificate to them through the Head of Department. This will be announced in the department blog. We will also publish it on "Newspunch", one of Nigeria's leading News websiste. Doing this will motivate the winners and others to become a long-term valuable editors. After the contest, we will monitor the participant for at least 6 month.
