[edit]- This is an interesting idea. I would like to hear more about how this project can build on experiences in similar projects elsewhere. --C.Koltzenburg (talk) 20:17, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- Not only is this an opportunity to address the gender gap in the Wiki-community, but it is also a good project for the contributors from Ghana as a follow up to Wiki Indaba. Humetheresa (talk) 09:21, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
- Looks like a solid idea, with lots of detail. Endorse! Skud (WMF) (talk) 00:08, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Project plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Phase 1
[edit]Phase 1 will be a pilot process for this project. This will involve a trip to one female Senior High School in Accra and a trip to the Northern Region to visit one female senior High Schools. Based on the responses we will be able to determine the differences such as in what kind of environment was our outreach most successful, what circumstance are females more compelled to edit Wikipedia, what we need to do/abandon in subsequent programs. This will inform our decision for subsequent projects after we are able to draw the contrast. The Northern Region Training is seen also as way of giving some underprivileged female students a chance to know more about Wikipedia and how they can also contribute. In the North we will seek to do most of the training over a period of two days. For the schools in Accra we will have four training sessions and finally an edit-a-thon at each school to give the students a hands on and practical experience. There will also be a two trainings and Edit-A-Thons for females in Accra targeting the general public and identifiable women groupings. One will be to generally improve articles of notable females in Ghana and in Africa whose articles are poor. The second Edit-A-Thon will be nomination and creation of articles for notable Ghanaian women who do not have articles on Wikipedia.
Northern Region
[edit]- Tamale Girls Secondary
Greater Accra Region
[edit]- Accra High School.
Part 2
[edit]Part 2 will be a 2 days training (Wikimedia Clinic) in Accra for interested females. This will bring together females from all walks of life together to have a first hand information about Wikipedia and how they can contribute. Females interested to contribute will be guided to create accounts and how they can contribute either by editing, translation, uploads etc. Others too may help suggest articles or topical issues for creation. 2.Editathon: There will be two ediat-a-thons to improve the articles of notable women in Ghana who already exist on Wikipedia. For those who do not have we will create a new article for them. These Edit-A-thons will not necessarily target only female students but also identifiable women groups and some gender activist who may have the interest to promote women and gender on Wikipedia.
Phase 2
[edit]This Phase will be primarily dedicated to visiting all female senior High Schools in three different Regions of Ghana. This will be however based on the success of PHASE 1
Ashanti Region
[edit]- Yaa Asantewaa Girls' Secondary
- St. Louis Seconadary School
- Kumasi Girls' Seconadary
- St Monica's Girls Secondary School.
- Afia Kobi Girls Senior High School.
- Kumasi Wesley Girls High School.
Central Region
[edit]- Mfantsiman Girls' Secondary
- Holy Child School
- Wesley Girls' High School
Impact
[edit]This will help create awareness for Wikipedia and its sister projects to the female students. The idea is to make Wikipedia known to females and to crave their indulgences and engagements with online and offline activities with respect to Wikipedia. For the female students we hope to expose them to Wikipedia and its sister projects before they reach the tertiary institutions. It will open them to this and create an early enthusiasm to contribute whiles inculcating the spirit of volunteerism.
Target readership
[edit]The target will be primarily English Wikipedia; but we will promote Twi and Ewe for translation purposes on Wikidata, WikiSpecies, Akan Wikipedia etc.
Fit with strategy
[edit]- Increasing participation - This project will increase participation of females by recruiting new female editors and volunteers with in-depth knowledge or interest in a particular skill that can support a particular Wikimedia project.
- Increasing quality -This project will also focus on articles of the existing schools and towns. The female editors and the students will work on improving existing articles of the schools and towns visited. They will also use the chance to take and upload pictures to improve these articles.
- Increasing reach -This project will help reach out to a lot of females who hitherto didn't know about Wikipedia or knew a little about Wikipedia. It is a strong conviction that when they are exposed to Wikipedia, they will become part of the Wikipedia community either as users or contributors.

Community engagement
[edit]Sustainability
[edit]We are looking at having a lasting partnership with the girl's school in Accra. The trainings will culminate into formation of Wiki Clubs on their campus. With the training for females this will also be an annual activity that we will seek partnerships with other bodies and make this an activity as part line up for the commemoration of World's Women day in Ghana every year. Again we will subsequently deploy Kiwix in these schools to make Wikipedia part of their day to day source of reference.
Measures of success
[edit]- To make Wikipedia a household name and an online Wikipedia known to the average female student in a female senior High School in Ghana.
- To get at least 15 new active female contributors for Wikipedia.
- Create Wikipedia articles for all existing female High Schools we visit and the town the school is located that is if they don't have articles on Wikipedia.
- To form partnerships with each school for subsequent Wikipedia activities in the near future
- Create new articles and develop existing stubs or articles for every Girls Senior High School in Ghana as well as the towns of their location.
- Upload at least 300 images from towns and schools we will visit on Wikimedia Commons.
- Celebrate women achievers in Ghana by nominating and creating articles for at least 10 notable Ghanaian women, improve the existing articles of at least 15 notable Ghanaian women.
