Support advancement of programmes, projects and events in Ukraine targeting increase in participation, readership and quality of materials in Wikimedia projects (such as Wiki Loves Earth, CEE Spring, Wikiexpeditions, Wikimedia Education Programme and others).
targetWikimedia projects in Ukrainian (Wikipedia, Wikinews, Wikisource, Wikivoyage etc.), Wikimedia Commons, other projects having information on Ukrainian cities and natural sites
Support advancement of programmes, projects and events in Ukraine targeting increase in participation, readership and quality of materials in Wikimedia projects. We will continue organising programmes (such as Wikiexpeditions, Wikimedia Education Programme etc.), organise projects (such as Wiki Loves Earth and CEE Spring) and events (such as wikiworkshops), prepare and distribute materials about Wikimedia projects in Ukraine.
Wikimedia Education programme and Wikiworkshops. We are planning to continue cooperation with our partner universities (5 of them are already using the new Education Programme extension) and continue making outreach to diverse communities by organising workshops for those interested in learning more about contributing to Wikipedia. We plan to organise 6 workshops during the period (as a part of WEP or not), each workshop will either include at least 2 organisers or will have a follow-up event later to increase efficiency. Schedule: 6 events during the entire period.
GLAM outreach. We have a pilot project with libraries and museums of Kharkiv Oblast. We plan to improve articles and contribute images about Kharkiv Oblast in collaboration with district libraries and local museums. Schedule: 8 events during the entire period.
Wikiexpeditions. We will continue organising Wikiexpeditions to make new photos and improve articles about particular regions. This will also involve visits to local museums and promotion of Wikipedia in respective regions. Each expedition will have an average of 2-3 participants. Schedule: 15 events, April-June (better weather and longer days). We will also organise cycling expeditions (10 events, April-June) and expeditions on foot (10 events, February-June).
Photo grants. We are planning to get photos of notable cultural and sports events by sponsoring tickets and/or accreditations. Schedule: 10 events during the entire period.
Music projects. We want to organise at least one (and probably more) music concerts featuring entirely free music, with music, lyrics, translations, performance and recordings all under Creative Commons licenses or in public domain. Schedule: first concert in March, probably more concerts during the period.
CEE Spring. We are planning to held a local version of CEE Spring 2015 article contest and invite users to contribute about Central and Eastern Europe in Ukrainian Wikipedia. Schedule: preparation and jury formation in February, contest itself in March-May, results and award ceremony in June-early July.
Publishing. We have a high demand for materials about Wikimedia projects, and our materials, such as Ukrainian translation of the Editing Wikipedia brochure and cheatsheets are extremely successful within various institutions and participants of our events. We will also publish our annual report and other materials about Wikimedia projects. Schedule: during the entire period.
Wikizghushchivka is our local award, given for the biggest contribution made to the wikiproject (usually one for a newbie and one for a more experienced user). We award it not only to most active users of Wikipedia, but also to users of other projects. Schedule: at the beginning of each month.
Jimmy Wales in a Ukrainian Wikipedia T-shirtSouvenirs. We plan to produce a wide range of souvenirs, from pens and badges to T-shirts. They will be awarded to various categories of people: bigger ones (e.g. T-shirts) will be used to award hard-working volunteers participating in our projects (such as Wikiexpeditions, Wiki Loves Earth, music projects) and the most active participants of our events (e.g. best contributors of wikiworkshops), while smaller ones (e.g. badges) will be used for other participants of events (e.g. all participants of article contests who have created an article) or for other people helping our projects (e.g. local people who helped organising Wikiexpeditions). Schedule: during the entire period.
Library. We are planning to buy books requested by volunteers, see wmua:Пропозиції до наповнення бібліотеки to see example requests. In return, we expect volunteers to create articles based on these books. Schedule: during the entire period.
Wiki Loves Earth. After very succesful editions of 2013 and 2014 we are planning to organise the 2015 edition where we want to improve coverage of natural sites. We would also like to expand it with an article contest. Schedule: creating the team in February, preparing lists and looking for partners and jury members in February-April, contest itself in May, work of the jury in June, results and award ceremony by 12 July.
WikiConference. Following previous editions in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, we would like to organise a new edition which should be a great occasion for Ukrainian wiki community to exchange experience and think of new projects, both on-wiki and off-wiki. We may also work on strategic issues of Wikimedia Ukraine during this event. Its programme should be close to the one from 2014. Schedule: venue determined by March-April, call for participation in April, submissions evaluated in May-June, programme finalised by mid-June, conference held on 27-28 June.
International conferences. We plan to attend at least three different events, one of them being GLAM-WIKI 2015 conference, and two other being regional conferences (e.g. Polish). We will invite users to share our experience and contribute to improvements to existing or launching new projects in Ukraine using the experience they will learn.
Other activities:
Our officeOffice. We would like to continue using our office, as it currently performs a number of functions: facilities for work for our part-time employee, meeting space for meetings with partners (it is in a convenient location, we do not need to meet in members' offices or in public places anymore), storage for our documents and materials (which means our members do not have to store them at home anymore) and as a legal and postal adress.
PR Manager. In order to generate the necessary impact, since December 2014 we are hiring a part-time (0.5 FTE) PR-manager. This proved to be useful for dealing with duties that cannot be appropriately done by volunteers, and we would like to continue having a PR-manager during this period. We plan to evaluate our current PR-manager (funded from Grants:PEG/WM UA/Programs in Ukraine 2014) and make a decision by late February whether we will proceed to a longer contract for her or whether we will look for a new candidate. The PR manager is working aprpox. 20 hours a week in our new office (or in external location, e.g. attending an event if needed) and reports to the Executive Director. (S)he should have an experience of work with Wikimedia projects, know wiki markup language, have an experience of PR work, have excellent writing skills in Ukrainian and a good command of English. His/her project goal will be management of external relations, maintaining public image of the organisation, support of relations with volunteers and media community. (S)he will be responsible for updating pages in social networks of Wikimedia Ukraine and Ukrainian Wikimedia projects, regular blog posts, preparation of press releases, media monitoring, organising public events and maintaining contacts with external partners.
Ukrainian Wikipedia: attracting new contributors, increasing quality of materials by organising article contests, wikiworkshops and Education Programme events, motivating most active contributors.
Wikimedia Commons: attracting new contributors and providing new high-quality images during Wiki Loves Earth and Wikiexpeditions; providing new media files within music projects
Ukrainian Wikivoyage: improving tour guides with high quality illustrations, motivating most active contributors.
Other Ukrainian projects (Wikiquote, Wikinews etc.): increasing public awareness about these project during our events, motivating most active contributors.
Wikipedia projects in minority languages of Ukraine (such as Crimean Tatar or Gagauz): preliminary outreach work, with more active works to follow in 2nd half of the year in projects were we will get successful outreach
Wikipedia and Wikivoyage projects in other languages having articles about Ukrainian cities and natural sites: improving articles with high quality illustrations.
Wikipedia projects in CEE languages: international cooperation during CEE Spring.
What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.
This project will particularly target the following priorities
Increasing Participation: more people contribute to Wikimedia projects, both to Wikipedia (Education Programme, workshops, article contests etc.), Wikimedia Commons (WLE, Wikiexpeditions) and other projects; people more actively participate (e.g. Wikizghushchivka, Wikiconference and other projects targeting more experienced editors); more people from underrepresented groups participate (in particular geographic regions with poor coverage).
Increasing Quality: both on Wikipedia (article contests, workshops targeting specific editor groups) and Wikimedia Commons (more high-quality images owing to Wiki Loves Earth and Wikiexpeditions).
Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is.
You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.

Fluctuating exchange rate and restrictions on use of foreign currency. Ukrainian Hryvnia is very volatile during the latest months, and our government makes us sell some 50% to 100% of incoming funds in foreign currency immediately upon reception. Inflation is also high in Ukraine.
Solution: we are requesting funds in USD and we have included Unforeseen lines in case prices or exchange rates will change before the event.
Poor track record of wikiworkshops (low editor retention over previous years)
Solution: we will invite participants to attend workshops with their laptops and create their first articles during the workshop. We will also make sure that all workshops are organised by at least two skilled volunteers (so that they can help more efficiently) and that they collect lists of participants' usernames.
Low level of involvement of institutions in Education Programme
Solution: since Autumn 2014 we are asking all institutions to use the new Education Programme extension for more efficient collaboration.
Uneven distribution of volunteers between regions.
Solution: more specific regional outreach, looking for volunteers in particular regions, events targeting population of particular regions.
