Project Goal:
Based on the experiences of our 2009 photo competition where we only reached the existing Wikimedia community, the aim of this grant was to organize photo competitions that could reach an audience outside those already present on Wikimedia sites. The original idea was to have three such competitions.
Description of actual activities: Discussion and negotiation with the representatives of Indafoto, the biggest Hungarian photo uploading site began in January 2011 and went on for months. During the negotiations the concept of the project evolved and it was agreed that we would organize one big competition where Wikimedia Hungary would provide the prizes and Indafoto the publicity and upload platform.
After agreement was reached on the mechanics of the competition and the upload mechanism the actual start date and theme of the competition was still to be agreed on. Finally, it was agreed, that the competition would start in September and coincide with the international Wiki Loves Monuments competitions. Because getting the monuments database took a little bit more time than anticipated, the Hungarian Wiki Loves Monuments competition is running between 21 September to 21 October.
What lessons were learned that could help others succeed in similar projects? Reaching the right audience (photographers in this case) might require looking outside the people already on Wikimedia.
Coming to an agreement with an external partner takes more time than anticipated.
Having too many competitions in a year can degrade their effectiveness.
What impact did the project have on WMF mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation? The competition is ongoing and was started after the grant period ended. The uploaded pictures can be seen here, before they are transferred to Wikimedia Commons.
