Grants:PEG/WM BE/WLM BeLux 2016
Goal
[edit]We want to encourage and facilitate the capturing and uploading of photographs of Belgian and Luxembourg heritage sites or monuments in September 2016 (goal I). On an organisational level, we want to strengthen our organisation (goal IIa); achieve a high media coverage (goal IIb); further develop our relationship with the different collaborating organisations (goal IIc); ensure continuity in our activities towards the user community (goal III).
Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]The project is centered around the organisation of Wiki Loves Monuments in Belgium and Luxembourg. We will organise the following activities:
- Part 1- pre-contest events (May-August)
Public presentations of WLM in public institutions, especially cultural heritage and educational institution. We will attempt at opening up participation and support to WLM to as many cultural institutions as possible, in order to multiply and diversify the campaign events. The target public of these events is composed of 1) sponsors, 2) institutions interested in collaborating in the organization of September events, 3) professional and amateur photographers who already know, or still have to learn about WLM.
- Part 2- September campaign
Organisation of max. 6 photo-walks, accompanied by explanation of how to upload pictures for the contest (Wiki Takes... a city: A group of participants make a tour and take pictures of monuments in a certain city; ~10-20 people), with particular focus on the European Heritage Days (8-11 September) and on monuments for which no or few pictures are currently available on Wikimedia Commons. The increased number of events for the September campaign in comparison with the last edition (2014) reflects the development of the WMBE network and organizing capacities and responds to our current outreach strategy, focusing on broadening up and diversifying participation in Wikimedia projects.
- Part 3- Judging session
This phase includes 2 sessions involving about five judges. The judges will first have two weeks of time to make their personal shortlist of 10 images; then they will discuss together the winning image starting from their pre-selection. Three main criteria are taken into account: encyclopedic purpose, technical quality, originality.
- Part 4- November Award Session
Award session. We will give away our prices, thank all collaborating organisations and the contributors. The event will be promoted within and outside the networks of collaborators of Wikimedia Belgium, in order to increase opportunities of networking.
- Part 5- January Post-contest reuse activity
Edit-a-thon based on the reuse of WLM photos to better illustrate Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects and to foster long-lasting collaboration of WLM-participants and partners with Wikimedia Belgium. The main targets of this phase are to attract new editors, strengthen the collaboration with active ones and improve pages especially of monuments that currently have no or little visibility on Wikimedia projects.
Impact
[edit]Target readership
[edit]Belgium is a multilingual community best compared to Canada and South Africa. Like Canada there is no such thing like a "Belgian language" the official languages are Dutch, French, German (de jure) and de facto English, so Belgian wiki contributors work in the Dutch, French, German and English wiki projects. Like South Africa, Belgium has a larger number of languages and therefore Wikimedia Belgium impacts in total 6 other Wiki language communities of smaller Belgian regional languages.
Fit with strategy
[edit]What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorites. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1-2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found at here.
Measures of success
[edit]We will consider this project a success if we can:
- Get 3.000 new uploaded pictures of Belgian and Luxembourg heritage sites in 2016 (2320 in 2014; 3179 in 2013, 4403 in 2012, 6102 in 2011) (goal I)
- Get 40 new contributors (goal I)
- Achieve a high 'diversity' of the uploaded pictures and contributors (eg. professional photographers vs hobby photographers, Dutch/French/German contributors) (goal I)
- Develop a broader professional volunteering organising team (goal IIa)
- Improve the media impact in comparison with the last edition in 2014 (goal IIb)
- Get a commitment from the partners for Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 during the Award Session (goal IIc)
- Have a considerable number of participants at the award prize giving session (goal III)
