Activities and lessons learned
[edit]Activities
[edit]Pre Contest
[edit]- Before June 2014: Official website created (domain name and hosting purchased) - www.wikilovesmonuments.pk
- May to August: Detailed lists for WLMP 2014 - All core team members worked on improving the lists so that as many sites as possible could be included in the competition.
- Funding
- A grant request was made to Wikimedia Foundation in June 2014. Until September 2014, funding was also sought from other sources. However, except for the Foundation's funding, other promised funding did not materialised.
- Publicity: Both before and during the contest (May to September)
- Posters were designed and sent via email as it was felt this would be a better mode of transmission.
- Facebook page created
- Advertisements were placed on Facebooks as well as on a local events promotion website (kiascenehai.pk).
- Promotional emails were sent to the various educational institutions: concerned departments and clubs. eg. Virtual University's Camera Club.
- Emails were also sent to individuals with an interest in photography.
- Messages were left on various Flickr photography groups including Cultural Heritage of Pakistan and Travel Guide of Pakistan.
- Blog post: WLMP 2014
- Twitter: WLMP
- Press Releases were sent to various websites and newspapers including ProPakistani; MediaPoondi; Brandsynario and Eventpress
- Newspaper articles published in August 2014: Awam (Urdu); Express Tribune
- During July and August, some organisation such as Danka were approached for their help in promoting the event.
- Core Team: Regular communication (May to November 2014) amongst the three members was mostly via email as one member resides in a different city.
Contest
[edit]- The contest was held in September 2014.
- During the entire month, publicity of the event continued. Queries were answered regarding various aspects of the competition including suitability of photographs and eligibility of competitors.
- Effort was made to sort through images as they were being uploaded including removing copyright violations and duplications.
Post Contest
[edit]- October: Judging of submitted entries
- Once the competition ended, all images were reviewed by the three core team members who narrowed them down using basic criteria including file size and possible copyright violations.
- Between 200 and 300 selected images were given to the judges to make their final selections. The process involved a number of rounds and over 10 judges.
- Winners (late October 2014):
- Top 10 winners announced via social media and online newspaper articles and tv: Dawn - English and Urdu.
- These were also publicised by various other websites: Pakistan Defence; Twittistaan; Pakistan360Degrees and BrandSynario
- Twitter feed announcing the Top 10 winners
- November 2014 - February 2015: Prize money and merchandise (WLMP and CC) was sent to 7 of the top 10 winning entries. The remaining 3 were not contactable.
- It was hoped that an awards ceremony and travelling exhibition would been held. However, due to various reasons it was not possible to hold either event.
Lessons learned
[edit]- What worked well?
- Small team (3) which worked well together to organise event. This made decision making easier as there were less people to consult.
- A combination of publicity methods: social media, print media, direct marketing, word of mouth and online advertising. This helped to engage all types of individuals and spread word beyond expectations.
- A successful event was held despite limited funding.
- What didn't work?
- Volunteers besides the core organising team were unreliable. Effort was made to engage more individuals but due to various reasons they backed out.
- Photographs were mostly from a small number of cities and regions. The range and variety of images that were soughed was to an extent not there.
- Even though there are a large number of women photographers in the country, their participation in the competition was limited.
- Most participants did not work on improving articles related to the photographs they uploaded.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- Engage more volunteers to work on some aspects including publicity and maintaining lists and working on Wikipedia articles.
- Market the competition with more focus on the different parts of the country so as to get more photographs from the more distant regions.
- Effort would be made to engage more women.
- Use twitter more effectively - target it towards those users who have an interest in the subject and hope they will retweet it to their followers like it was done to promote Wiki Loves Earth Pakistan 2015 [1] which reached over 25,000 people.
- Provide for a means of receiving feedback on the event.
- Funding would be sought from a larger number of sources so as to not rely on only 1 sponsor.
Learning patterns
[edit]Outcomes and impact
[edit]Outcomes
[edit]- Provide the original project goal here.
- The main purpose of WLM Pakistan is to produce freely licensed images of heritage sites and monuments of Pakistan which will be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons with an aim to promote both the local cultural heritage and the concept of free license. An image repository will be created on Commons which will be used across Wikimedia sister projects. Moreover, the competition will also introduce many new users and will help in establishing a Pakistani Wikimedia community. The ultimate goal is to promote Wikipedia, the Wikimedia movement and a free knowledge culture in Pakistan.
- The scope of this grant request covers promotional costs, awards for the winners, and other miscellaneous costs. The award prizes are a stimulus to increase the participation in the contest which will advance the above mentioned aims and goals.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
- Yes, to a large extent, the main purpose of obtaining heritage related freely licensed images was achieved with some 11,500 images still available. A small but hopefully growing repository of images on Pakistan has been started on Commons and it is hoped that these images will prove useful in all projects. Over 750 images have already been used to illustrate articles on at least 10 different language Wikis including English (Pakistan), Urdu (Karachi), Bengali (Badshahi Mosque), French (Derawar Fort); Italian (Badshahi Mosque) and German (Jahangir).
- The establishment of a Pakistani Wikimedia community is still in its infancy. The award prizes did simulate participation as over 700 individuals participated in WLMP. And this competition also got people interested in the movement, at least in using the images. One article announcing the top 10 winners created some buzz including over 14k Facebook likes, 230+ tweets and 169 comments (http://www.dawn.com/news/1140308). It is hoped that in time, more people will show an interest in contributing to various articles in their preferred language.
Progress towards targets and goals
[edit]Project metrics
Project metrics | Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Quantity of images: >1000 | >11,500 | Initially more than 12,000 images were uploaded. However, some were removed due to duplication and editorial reasons. Total number puts Pakistan in the top 10 nations and 1st amongst first time competitors for 2014. | |

Global Metrics
[edit]We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.
- Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
- Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."
For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Impact
[edit]What impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?
Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects?
- By holding the WLMP competition and providing participants with a monetary incentive, participation on Wikimedia Commons increased with over 11,500 images uploaded.
Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects?
- The availability of images helped to increase the number of Pakistan related articles that were illustrated on over 10 different language Wikis.
Option C: How did you increase the reach (readership) of one or more Wikimedia projects?
- The event was publicised to the fullest extent possible. This helped to involve people, from across the country, in uploading to Wikimedia Commons.
