Lessons learned
[edit]- What worked well?
- The well-established arrangements of WLM/WLE worked well.
- Physical meet-ups are interesting. If organised properly, it can help building a strong and productive movement in Thailand.
- What didn't work?
- Article competition flow: register first and complete training later approach
- Delayed completion of translated "The Wikipedia Adventure" (TWA)/limited volunteer capacity to complete the task.
- There were long turn-around times due to lack of certain technical assistance (i.e., sysop on Thai Wikipedia with strong programming skill). The Thai translation of the TWA had been completed but we were lacking people with programming skills with sysop rights to implement the translated materials into the system.
- Retention rate of new users was only 10% for the article contest (WLX). We have basically lost 10% of participants per month.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- Get several local Wikipedia admins into the team or become admins ourselves (for TWA translation) and prepare well in advance.
- Ask participants to complete TWA first, then register to participate in the project. Put the competition in the context of Wikipedia Asian Month competition. Combine the activities with physical meet-ups/edit-a-thon.
- Since meetups/edit-a-thons were successful, more meetups/edit-a-thons will be organised in 2016.
- We wish to have more people with different skills and expertise to shorten the turn around time.
- We will definitely make adjustments to the article contest to make it more appealing. There are several ways to do so, for examples, change of topic, a different target audience and better advertisement.

Outcomes and impact
[edit]Outcomes
[edit]Please refer to the event pages for outcomes and impact:
- Wiki Loves Earth (WLE) 2015 in Thailand
- Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) 2015 in Thailand
- Article contest (WLX) 2015 in Thailand

- Provide the original project goal here.
We aim to grow Wikipedia editors within Thai secondary schools all over the country. We consolidate the photo contests with writing contest as per suggestions from previous approved grant application. We will provide online training and mentoring to participants during 2015 and they are eligible for prizes in three contests throughout the year.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
We were ambitious about recuiting long term editors. The metric numbers however show that we only get the voluteer work done on the projects only during the competition period. We analyzed post-project activities of the new users using the Global User Contribution tool, the majority of them did not continue making contributions to Wikipedia after the completion of the project/meetup/contest. We now understand that gold Smiths and shoe Smiths are not the same Smiths, therefore we should not expect those who uploaded the media to make text contributions and vise versa.
The WLE and WLM have settled over the years. Expectations and outcomes of both contests matched. We originally expect only 20% uploads from new users. However, fifty nine percent of the media uploaded as part of the WLM were from new users, which is way beyond expectation.
Progress towards targets and goals
[edit]Project metrics
Project metrics | Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
We expected at least 1,000 uploads for the WLM and WLE. | We had 2,383 and 729 uploads for the WLM and WLE, respectively. | Target reached and not reached. Even though, we got over 1,000 uploads, number of uploads for WLM decreased by 44% (only 2,383 uploads as opposed to 4,287 uploads from the previous year). We had shorter period of announcement and could have done better advertisement.
We expected the submitted photographs (for WLE and WLM) to win international prizes. | Three photographs won international prizes. | Target reached. Three submitted photographs won international prizes, two for the WLM and one for the WLE.
We expected 100 articles created or improved as part of the WAM and the article contest (WLX). | 182 articles were created. | Target reached
We expected at least 20% of uploads/contributions from new users for all contests. | More than half of the uploads/contributions were from new users, 54% and 59% for article contests (WAM&WLX) and WLM, respectively. | Target reached |

- Learning question
- Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
- YES and no
YES: There were many people (>100) involved in the activities. We have inspired photographers to participate in our movement. We have organised edit-a-thons and meets ups. We have send t-shirts to existing volunteers/admin on Thai Wikipedia and partner organizations. Our physical presence definitely motivated so many people.
no: Some volunteers may burn out during the project and delays/unprofessionalism in some aspects may be demotivating for some people. We believe that it is an unavoidable side effect of the project of this scale.
Impact
[edit]What impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?
Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects? By organising photo and article competition, we have increased participation in two Wikimedia Projects
- Thai Wikipedia
- Wikimedia Commons
Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects? The nature of the competition is to archive the best quality compared to existing work on the projects. Therefore, the products will be set as examples of good quality work in two Wikimedia Projects.
- Thai Wikipedia
- Wikimedia Commons
Option C: How did you increase the reach (readership) of one or more Wikimedia projects? As we have reached out to the general public during the course of the three competitions and side activities, we increased readerships of two Wikimedia Projects.
