Yes
- Is your project completed?
YES
Activities and lessons learned
[edit]Activities
[edit]- Three sessions ( One in a month) and as part of a series to teach how to edit Wikipedia and how to write a new article perfectly.
- Online mentorship: I have the page and the website that I have a place for each user to enter his/her new article in order to track them and notice the mistakes and correct them. And I will use a special link in Wikipedia that allows me to track the edits and adds for a group of users.
- Introduce Wikipedia Education Program to three main universities in Erbil after completions or within the time of the project
- I didn't do the (An awareness campaign on both languages Arabic & Kurdish supported by an already existing website titles: Add to Humanity, Add to Wikipedia, and a FB page which has so far 8000 fans. (The campaign will be divided to 3 parts, each part before each session).
Lessons learned
[edit]- What worked well?
- Response from the contributors was better than Expected.
- Using the Wiki Metrics in order to catch the progress was brilliant.
- While discussing with the place that I agreed with to print T-Shirts as prizes, he was so excited for the workshop. He suggested to have more valuable prizes in order to motivate the participants more as they are very fresh and beginners. I told him that the budget is not enough, he offered to upgrade the prizes as a contribution from him to support the project and he bought with the monies some small electronics devices that I distributed them to best contributors in the workshops.
- What didn't work?
- Because of having the workshops in Summer,I didn't find it really useful to do the flyers and the awareness campaign while all universities and schools are off! I found it was a bit more rational to do it with the beginning of studying and while launching the first Wikipedia Educational Program in Erbil and Iraq.
- Because of all the participants except one never edited Wikipedia before, beside the good participants I got participants that had zero contributions. They said Wikipedia is awesome but it's not for us to edit! I don't know if this happened before to other people who teaches how to Edit but for me I think that I might focus more in next times on the level of interest for people who wants to be part of any workshop.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- Some of the editors seemed to be interested in the first workshop, then until coming to the second workshop I saw zero contributions, I should've not letting them keep coming to the second and third workshop. some of them told me that they will start after getting the full image and they even kept writing notes but at the end I didn't see any outcome from them.
- I would add more fun and creative choices of contests.

[edit]Outcomes and impact
[edit]Outcomes
[edit]- Provide the original project goal here.
To get 25 people taught how to edit Wikipedia in 3 sessions (A series of 3 sessions) To increase the awareness of Editing Wikipedia in Local Languages (Kurdish, Arabic) and to pose the idea of fighting terrorism and racism with increasing free knowledge in our environment. The goal includes increasing number of active editors by following up with everyone after the session to make sure they don't have any obstacles to continue editing Wikipedia.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
Yes I did achieve my goal.
Progress towards targets and goals
[edit]Project metrics
Project metrics | Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
25 new contributors | 28 new contributors | Invited 3 more whom I felt they are interested.
15 Female Participant | 15 Female Participant
50% increase in contribution rate per participating user as compared to user's contribution rate outside the competition timeframe | This was applicable only on people who had accounts earlier to the workshops and they were few and the increase in their contribution was more than 100% | Most of the contributors had no idea about Wikipedia and they didn't have accounts so the accounts were made in the first session or workshop.
200 new articles | 682 new articles (Deleted ones not included) | Some of the new editors loved it and sat a challenge to themselves and they made it!
15 of participants who are active editors | 6 of the participants | I introduced Wikipedia to people who didn't know about it earlier, many of them loved the idea of the contest but few who loved and understood the purpose of Wikipedia so they kept contributing. |
Global Metrics
[edit]We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.
- Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
- Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."
For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.
