Activities

Provide a detailed list of activities performed to complete this project, descriptions of these activities, and the amount of time spent on each activity. This section should also include a list of participants, or a link to pictures, blog posts, or videos from the project or event.

As part of Tewiki10, the following activities were taken up :

• 8 Telugu Wiki training workshops
• Around 60 Telugu Wikipedians gathered for the event and were joined by 6 other Indic wikimedians.
• Around 20 press coverage
• 5 electronic media coverage
• QR coding of the whole KBN college campus was taken up by CIS-A2K with student Wikipedians from the college as participants.
• 55555 article sprint was successfully completed
• Quality improvement of village articles of Guntur and Krishna districts (about 2000 stub articles got improved into start class articles)
• 3 media partners and 1 hospitality partner.
• Event attended by 400 people over 2 days.
• 1 book was released under CC-BY-SA 3.0 license and was uploaded to Telugu Wikisource.

Lessons learned

What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects? Consider the following questions and respond with 1 - 2 paragraphs.

What went well?

The celebrations were done with good participation from almost all active Wikipedians from Telugu community and 6 people from other Indic wikipedia communities. KBN college was QR-coded with Wikipedia articles on the entities associated with college. This is first such college in India probably to get such feature. Ten of the active Wikipedians were awarded with Komarraju Lakshmana Rao Wikipedian Award that triggered more activity in Telugu wikipedia in the consequent month as can be seen from the stats of March 2014.

What did not go well?

Due to politically chaotic situation in Andhra Pradesh, the event could not have more Wiki training sessions.

What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?

From now on, we will try to pull in small city wise anniversary events instead of focusing on one big event in one city.

To commemorate 10 years of Telugu Wikipedia and to strengthen Telugu Wikipedia community and its outreach efforts.

Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 paragraphs.

Yes. This project aimed at celebrating Ten years of Telugu Wikipedia's presence. The project involved a series activities ranging from Wikipedia Training sessions to celebrations, media coverage, and much more. This event also made the Telugu community realise that cities other than Hyderabad, where most of our activity was confined, like Vijayawada pull more audience to Wikipedia related open knowledge platforms.

The event pulled in almost all the active community members and few from other Indic communities as well. One month post the event saw many more edits from the felicitated users.

Measures of success

List the measures of success exactly as provided in the approved grant submission, and evaluate your project according to each measure listed there.

The measures of success, as posted in proposal are :

to take the active contributors count from 71 to 300 and to maintain it around 300 or above consistently (since December 2013 we have initiated various outreach programs in collaboration with CIS-A2K, which has already taken this to above 200);

500 important articles that should be present in each Wikipedia are expanded from their current stub form.

To improve stub village articles of three districts around Vijayawada (event location).

To take active contributors count to 300 may take some more time, and the 500 important articles have been already brought to at least start class level from stub level, and three districts' village articles have been developed into at least a start class article from stub level.

Provide an overall assessment of how your project went according to these measures.

We are hopeful of presenting it as soon as the stats for May and June are available, as they fit well for the assessment.

With the new learnings, we may work in same lines with more intensity and better goals, due to the fact that the community has grown significantly in number.

As per Stabilizing Infrastructure, this event proved to bring in KBN College at Vijayawada to organize community event like Tewiki10 at their premises. The event saw lot of increased editing and thus participation. Students and faculty of KBN college were trained in editing Wikipedia. They successfully converted their campus to have QR codes of Wikipedia articles related to their campus. Several articles have been improved by the participants at the event, this means there is Quality Improvement. Also, this has increased reach for Telugu Wikipedia. This did not directly have anything in plan or implementation for the innovation encouragement. But students of KBN college created a lamp post in the shape of Wikipedia globe, which was highly appreciated by the community present.
