Grants:IdeaLab/Women, Wiki and Wonders: Jadavpur University Campaign
Project idea
[edit]What is the problem you're trying to solve?
[edit]This project aims to inculcate Wikipedia Inspire campaign which aims to provide a platform for reducing gender gaps and promote female users to contribute more in various wiki projects. We believe university-level students can certainly contribute to this movement and make this endeavor a success. To be specific we are trying to solve -
- Provide the knowledge of Wikipedia as an independent platform to discuss women specific issues
- To create an awareness through open-source knowledge creation
- Enhance the wikiprojects through indigenous knowledge documentation.
What is your solution?
[edit]Our goals are clear and specific.
- Three University level workshops to document the issues pertaining to education, culture, socio-economic aspects of women.
- Generating information such as jobs, skill developments targeting the female population and constant update of the wiki pages articles that contain such information. The articles will be monitored by feamle wiki editors and administrators.
- Putting legal rights and providing free content as legal aid. For this we collaborate with legal cells and lawyers and upload those in commons.
- Promote wikipedia for women, this can be done 1) by uploading the materials related to women activists, freedom fighters, film makers, successful personalitie and 2) by conducting a series of editathons for researchers to work in the gender equality domain.

Aimed at improving one or more of Wikimedia's existing websites
[edit]Yes, this project aims to gather large data for wikipedia, and wiki commons.
Content-creation is not directly funded
[edit]Right, so this project adopts a field-based approach to fulfill the working conditions. University based workshops certainly increase the seriousness of the approach. Our third workshop is excursion based which again we argue generate more interests and participation.
Any code or other materials (e.g., training material, program checklists, pamphlets, etc.) must be published
[edit]The project completely adheres to the rules and regulations and CC.
Projects that can be completed without assistance or review from WMF engineering
[edit]Yes the project will be accomplished by local volunteers and wikimedians. No hardcore engineering is required.
Reporting requirements to receive a grant
[edit]The grantee will be responsible to send reports as per the requirement. People involved in the project directly or indirectly have been named under project team.

- Third workshop will directly involve local people and work as bridge between existing wiki users and non-wiki users.
Sustainability
[edit]The project aims to build up a system by which the idea can sustain. The best thing is we are aiming at creating new friends who will contribute to Wikipedia consistently. We will create email lists and group pages by which we stay connected. The objective is to empower people rather than directives so that even after workshops people continue to think and write about their issues.
Measures of success
[edit]From our earlier workshops we have experienced that college and university students take part in wiki-programmes. Since a number of students research on field, this practical workshops will encourage research and generate more research topics in the field of gender gaps and gender equality. Even if students of a couple of universities turn up at least 6000 students will be benefitted directly or in indirect manner by this programme.
