Grants:IdeaLab/Wikimedia meetup groups
Project idea
[edit]What is the problem you're trying to solve?
[edit]Engaging more people with contributing to Wikimedia projects.
What is your solution?
[edit]A few programming language groups (Python, Ruby, JS) have local groups on meetup.com everywhere. I believe the Python Software Foundation allocates funds to pay for the meetup fees. How about something similar for Wikimedia enthusiasts? It may bring in many local people who want to contribute to Wikimedia projects, but don't know where to start. It will also provide a social setting and community for enthusiasts.
Who will you be doing outreach with?

[edit]About the idea creator
[edit]I am an Outreachy intern with Wikimedia for Dec 2016 to March 2017. I also volunteer as Wikimedia coordinator/admin for outreach programs (GSoC/Outreachy) for summer 2017 (May-Aug 2017).

No funding needed?
[edit]Does your idea not require funding, but you're not sure about what to do next? Not sure how to start a proposal on your local project that needs consensus? Contact Chris Schilling on-wiki at I JethroBT (WMF) (talk · contribs) or via e-mail at cschillingwikimedia.org for help!
