Grants:IdeaLab/WikiProject Men
Project idea
[edit]What is the problem you're trying to solve?
[edit]There is currently no space on-wiki where a man can go and be sure that he will be able to participate in discussions without being dominated by woman's voices. Wikipedia needs a place where men can feel safer and not always overwhelmed by female advice, criticism, and explanations.
What is your solution?
[edit]Using the user preferences "Internationalisation" setting for those who prefer to be described as "he" (or the "Male Wikipedians" category), plus a project-moderator process where editors pledge that they are men and have read and agreed to the project's rules, registered men editors may join the group and discuss Wikipedia related matters. It would probably be more focused on community, policies, and guidelines than on content, but content discussion would not be off limits.
Men editors would not be required to join the project, of course, and all editors, regardless of gender, would be able to read the project's pages.
Project goals
[edit]Create a space conducive to men's participation on Wikipedia. Maintain the space for men to seek advice from men peers. Maintain the space for men to discuss the challenges they share as men Wikipedians. Increase the number of men editors on Wikipedia.

[edit]- With the recent focus on Gender Gap and pro-women impetus, we must protect our self-respect! Ricordisamoa 18:14, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose. This idea, while original and definitely deserving of consideration, is greatly overshadowed by its successor/counterpart "Wikipedia Women", though I believe the women-only on-wiki area was never intended a serious proposal and was only set up only to provide a veneer of equality, and avoid charges of discrimination! - Support. While of course Gender gap is there. Of course the similar issue on the women's part is much stronger. Still, our world must be a neutral world, and, well, things like in Harry Potter where girls could enter boys' dorm but not vice versa are kinda not fair in perfect world, the world we kind of strive to move forward to. I hope I've written enough disclaimers to not look as if I am against Gender gap and female editors and content related projects, because I am not, on contrary. --Base (talk) 23:26, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
