Grants:IdeaLab/Quarry improvements
Project idea
[edit]What is the problem you're trying to solve?
[edit]Quarry is very useful, but development has stagnated for a while now - mostly due to lack of time / resources. People now manually do a lot of this work (manually run queries every day, manually create multiple queries for different wikis, etc) - and it'd be great to add these features to Quarry itself.
What is your solution?
[edit]Pick the most requested and needed features / maintenance Quarry needs, and work on fixing them! Many feature requests have already been logged on Phabricator.
Project goals
[edit]1. Allow running query across multiple wikis (most requested feature!) 2. Display history of query + results (so you can see how results looked at different points of time) 3. Re-run a query at specific intervals (a quarry query that can be automatically 'updated daily' or 'updated weekly') 4. General code cleanup and overhaul. The code is starting to get a little creaky and could use some love! 5. Move quarry to tool labs. It is currently hosted in its own labs project, which makes it more difficult for code contributors to get up to speed.
Who will you be doing outreach with?

[edit]About the idea creator
[edit]I'm Yuvi Panda, and have worked for a long time on making our volunteer tool infrastructure (Tools and Labs) better. I enjoy building infrastructure that enables people to do things they couldn't do before.
Participants
[edit]- Developer I can commit a small amount of time to development and advising developers. I have experience with some of the backend systems that Quarry uses. EpochFail (talk) 18:54, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
Endorsements
[edit]- I'm an avid Quarry user and have found it an indispensable tool for collaboration, disseminating bite-sized chunks of data, and teaching people data science methods. There's really nothing else like Quarry out there. Investing in improvements to this tool with yield dividends. Jtmorgan (talk) 00:09, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
