Grants:IdeaLab/Put an end to edit wars

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Put an end to edit wars
Wikimedia witnesses a number of edit wars which consumes a considerable amount of effort of the users. An automated procedure can be applied which would temporarily lock the article (any page in which an edit war is detected by the bot) for IP editors and new users. Further, an Edit War repository page can be created which would be updated with the article name every time such a pattern is detected.

Project idea

[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

[edit]

Vandalism caused in the form of edit wars by compromised accounts can be decreased.

What is your solution?

[edit]

Putting an automatic temporary edit lock for IP users and new users on pages in which edit war is detected. The lock can be removed by administrators. 2 new pages will be required. One which would record a list of such pages and will need administrator intervention for removal of lock and the other which would record such articles for experienced users to view the page and finalize the correct version of the edit.

Project goals

[edit]

Decreasing vandalism in the form of edit wars and consequently saving of both time and effort.

  • Indeed, this is quite upsetting! Not all edits seem convincing, but the correct content has to be inserted no matter what. As an example...someone might not like the 'source' of a piece, even when the one writing it might be very sure of it. This does not mean that the piece has to be promptly removed; but there can be a discussion (and resolution) while the piece itself remains locked. Gomusam (talk) 11:37, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
