Grants:IdeaLab/Program coordinator training to handle disruptive behavior on-wiki

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Program coordinator training to handle disruptive behavior on-wiki
Several policies may be applicable in situations where disruptive behavior comes up on-wiki in programs funded or hosted by the WMF. The goal of this idea is to develop a program helping individuals leading or coordinating these programs to navigate considerations and actions to take when faced with disruptive behavior from one or multiple editors.

Project idea

[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

[edit]

Currently, there are several considerations that could be relevant to dealing with situations where on-wiki disruptive behavior arises in a program relevant to a WMF grant:

What is your solution?

[edit]

Provide training and create clear guidelines and resources for program leaders/coordinators. The training will:

  • Give guidance on applicable policies and procedures given a specific Wikimedia project or set of projects
  • De-escalation techniques and general engagement recommendations
  • Proper reporting procedures and and expectations around appropriate action to prevent further incidents.

Goals

[edit]

Open Questions

[edit]
  • Who will provide the training?
Administrators, WMF Staff, experts in harassment prevention, a group consisting of all of these roles?
  • What methods of providing the training to program coordinators should be considered?
Scheduling a discussion workshop with a group, providing an online module, 1:1 trainings with individuals, assessment of comprehension?
Several approaches may be feasible; also allow training participants to choose what method is best for them and their audience.
  • What existing programs or resources for training are available that may be useful?
Grants:PEG/Ada Initiative/Gender-gap admin training, Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard

Roles

[edit]
  • Community organiser work with program leaders to build awareness of project, get feedback on desired elements, potentially lead actual training
  • Project manager coordinate research and construction efforts, build a timeline, schedule meetings with interested parties, manage budget, summarize feedback into plan for training
  • Designer work with project manager, program leaders, and researchers to decide on best design for project; create drafts, training scripts, and/or discussion goals of training for feedback; incorporate feedback into final design
  • Researcher determine common points of conflict, established methods of conflict resolution/de-escalation

  • Advisor Will advise and help coordinate tasks with individuals interested in providing this kind of training to program facilitators. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 22:32, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
  • Researcher I should very much like to help out with the design of guidelines that allow for a resolution of conflicts using logic. Mathmensch (talk) 11:01, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
  • Happy to support this project. Sydney Poore/FloNight (talk) 03:53, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Volunteer I would like to help. Liridon (talk) 18:11, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Designer Nice Sgffjfg (talk) 13:09, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Volunteer I would like to assist by research if possible. I'm especially interested in researching the motivations of harassers, with an eye towards preventing harassment through didactic approach. Liluala (talk) 15:06, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Endorsements

[edit]
  • I like this idea but I think the in-person meetup disruptors would be a higher priority. Currently, there are numerous online methods of dealing with disruptive people. Geraldshields11 (talk) 21:37, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
  • yes we need more training of persons in positions of responsibility. Slowking4 (talk) 14:27, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Support but this proposal needs to be more focused, and handled by the WMF, not volunteers. I really hate to say this, especially after my experiences on enwiki, but may need to be anonymous in order to shield the decision-makers from harassment. —Neotarf (talk) 23:15, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Support per Neotarf. Smallbones (talk) 02:18, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Support also per Neotarf. Darkfrog24 (talk) 01:57, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Support. I think that this is a good idea. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 06:29, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
  • This is a good idea, but it is important to know the answers to the open questions. Kenzia (talk) 09:21, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
