Grants:IdeaLab/Inspire the students to contribute

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Inspire the students to contribute
I want to introduce Wikimedia Education Program in Bangladesh. If you can create awareness among students, it will automatically spread to others. It is the easiest way. So this year I like to focus on this issue.

Audience

[edit]

Who are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?

[edit]

Try to be as specific as possible about this group.
student, teacher

In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?

[edit]

Bengali English

In what ways does this group communicate with each other?

[edit]

This can include services and apps in social media, mailing lists, physical spaces like conferences or lectures, or at specific institutions like at a library.
Facebook, Physical meet ups and seminars

What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?

[edit]

Think about what they would be interested in reading and learning about; does Wikipedia provide better access to information this group cares about?
For educational research, to gain knowledge and improve understanding.

Project idea

[edit]

What language Wikipedia projects will you promote to new readers?

[edit]

Bengali, English

How will you communicate with new readers? Will you be communicating with them online, in-person, or both?

[edit]

I mainly communicate with new reader through meet-up, workshop and online media (like Facebook).

Describe your idea to engage new readers. How might it be implemented? What will you tell people about Wikipedia?

[edit]

Think about the steps that might involved to make this idea happen, and what you might teach people about your experience or others' experiences using Wikipedia.
I am regularly arranging wiki meet-ups in my community. I am also trying to communicate with new readers through workshops. I think this two are the best way to communicate. I tell them that Wikipedia is the best to get and to share knowledge. It is our responsibility to share our knowledge with others.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?

[edit]

If you’re not certain about how to respond to this question when starting your idea, you do not need to answer it right now. Campaign participants and Wikimedia Foundation staff can help you consider some options.
Here is a summary, by which I came to know if this project successful or not: • Improved skills of users on the Bengali Wikipedia and members of our organization through mentoring them and including in our projects and activities; • Increased awareness and improved perception of the Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons, through Meetup, participating in public events, using the social networks and so on. • Increased activity on the Bengali Wikipedia and Commons as a result of the Meetups and workshops. • Increased/Improved skills of on-wiki contributors. I use Skype for remote support. • To make it easier for readers and new/experienced editors to engage, I am always trying the user talk page to solve any kind of misunderstanding. • Work with the WLM and WLE Bangladesh and reviewed thousands photos. • Increased awareness about the Wikimedia projects through several Meetups and workshops. 25 events were organized by Rajshahi Community in the last two years. Increased/Improved skills of off-wiki volunteers. Right now Rajshahi Wikipedia Community is the most active community in Bangladesh. Many active contributors raised from there. • About 06 lectures given at 05 educational institutions with outreach to about 300 students and resulting in about 50 new users created. • In total I made 882 new pages in Bangla and English Wikipedia, Upload 883 files in Commons. I nominated 38 Image for Quality Image and Valued Image. I also have total 29 Images of my own as Quality/Valued Image.

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?

[edit]

Do you need people with specific skills or resources to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? Do you need advising from Wikimedia Foundation staff?
Yes, definitely I can implement that idea. I have a good relation with some of the faculty of my university. With their help their, I think I can easily implement this idea.

Wikimedia Education program yet not implemented in Bangladesh. So if get the opportunity to get help from a skilled or experienced people, that will be better from me.

If I get financial help from the foundation, that will make it quite easy to implement.
