Grants:IdeaLab/Diversity Metrics
Project idea
[edit]Expand diversity metrics
What is the problem you're trying to solve?
[edit]Other metrics, besides biography articles, should be created and used to describe diversity and to also include the other issues related to diversity other than gender such as:
- ethnicity
- race
- age
- continent
- disability
- number of health articles, i.e., women's health vs mens health
- biographies of Native Americans, Blacks, immigrants
We hear so much about issues related to diversity but have no 'easy' way for regular editors like myself to view the metrics. Accurate metrics may drive content creation on topics that are under-represented in the encyclopedia.
What is your solution?
[edit]Contract a specialist who will develop metric tools to assess diversity in other areas in addition to women's vs men's biographies. These tools should be used to create a 'place' where diversity is monitored and updated monthly for all the community to see. Create diversity measuring tools that measure other metrics to better quantify diversity.
Project goals
[edit]This project will present metrics on the English Wikipedia in an easy-to-understand format for all editors to see. Most of the metrics about diversity on Wikipedia exist in other publications Why do we have to read periodical literature to find out how we are doing?
Get involved
[edit]Expand your idea
[edit]A grant from the Wikimedia Foundation could fund the hiring of a capable 'metrics-generator' who would do coding, page creations, logs or whatever is needed to create a public space to view metrics on diversity. Maintaining such a 'space' would be an on-going task that I am not sure could be done by volunteers.
Errata
[edit]Since this only my second (I think) idea lab proposal, I need someone to hold my hand through the process.
