Avoid subcategorizing women

Many employment-related categories exist in the form of (for example) "Composers" with a subcategory of "Female composers" but no matching "Male composers". If there are to be gendered categories, then we should seek to avoid the male default and avoid subcategorizing women.

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

Defaulting to maleness is a broad societal issue with a variety of across-the-board repercussions. On Wikipedia (and Commons, and probably elsewhere), it manifests itself in the form of categories that assume that constituent entities will be male until proven otherwise. It was likely never the intention of the category creators to minimize the role of women but the end result reinforces notions of the male norm/the female exception all the same.

What is your solution?

If we collectively agree that gendered subcategories of Foo must exist, then both Female Foo and Male Foo categories should exist, with all articles in category:Foo placed into one of them. Of course, Non-binary Foo would also be useful to have if there are any members of category:Foo who are neither female nor male.
