What is your solution?

• A (double) writing week about cultural heritage; Wikipedia writes about cultural heritage for two weeks (languages that join).
  • Writing about the same topic is fun, you can cooperate in new ways
  • Fun and cooperation leads to more writing and more articles
  • Example: Writing Week Denmark (800 articles, increased Dutch Wikipedia new article creation by about a third [the writing week also encouraged other writers to write about topics outside Denmark]), Writing Week Sweden (1000 articles)
• Cooperate with musea and cultural heritage organisations
  • Meetings at musea and other institutions
  • Directors of (national) musea and cultural heritage organisations write letters of appreciation for Wikimedians that did a good job during the writing week
  • Example: [1], Brussels Libraries (20 libraries) announced the Writing Week Brussels on Brussels Television
• Cooperate with politicians
  • Politicians attend wikimeets
  • Politicians write letters of appreciation for Wikimedians that did a good job during the writing week
  • Politicians meet and thank Wikimedians
  • Example: For Writing Week Brussels the Prime Minister of the Brussels Capital region and the Flemish minister for Culture will meet and thank volunteers coming April 21 and 25 in Brussels.

  • Example: If the director of the British Museum thanks a Brasilian editor it shows that the British Museum appreciates Wikipedia and Wikimedia volunteers, it is nice for the volunteer, it is interesting to media, and we can reach new volunteers
  • Example: If the Dutch minister for culture meets and thanks an Indian editor it shows that the Dutch government appreciates Wikipedia and Wikimedia volunteers, it is nice for the volunteer, it is interesting to Indian media, and we can reach new volunteers

Project goals

Main goal:

• New or strongly improved Wikipedia articles on Cultural Heritage (2.000-10.000)

Side goals:

• Media attention for Wikimedia projects (100 appearences in newspapers, radio, tv, internet)
• Wikimeets (10-20 wikimeets of 5-10 people each)
• Public support by politicians for Wikimedia projects (5-10 national or state level ministers for culture to support the project)
• Public support by cultural institutions for Wikimedia projects (5-10 national or state level cultural institutes)
• Volunteers thanked by politicians/cultural institutes (10-50 volunteers receive a letter of appreciation)
• New volunteers (50 new online editors to write their first article during the writing weeks)

Side effect that can be measured:

• Other significant edits (disambiguation page, categories, etc.)
• New images of cultural heritage

• Get organisers in several languages
• Create project pages on meta and several Wikipedia languages
• Contact musea and politicians

• Contact volunteers that were randomly selected (volunteers selected by lottery; each article gives a lot or more lots based on quality of work)

• Writing Week project on Dutch Wikipedia
• Gereon K. has shown interest to organise on the German Wikipedia
• The Dutch minister for Culture will announce the Writing Week on 29 June during the opening speach at the European Conference on Digitalising Cultural Heritage in Amsterdam.
• The Flemish minister for Culture has shown interest and has offered the help of his department
• The prime minister of the Brussels Capital Region has shown interest

Budget

• Travel expenses 9.000 USD
  • Local organisers (1-2 per area) to meet with musea/institutions/governments (10-20) (2x20x50 USD = 2.000 USD)
  • Volunteers (1-2 per meet) to help or join with wikimeets (10-20) (2x20x50 USD = 2.000 USD)
  • Fly 1-10 selected volunteers and 1-2 organisers from somewhere in the world to meet with musea/institutions/governments + hotel (5.000 USD)
• Project management: 1.000 USD
  • Global phone contact with musea/institutions/governments (200 USD)
  • Banners, flyers, printing (200 USD)
  • Making/sending certificates to be send to volunteers (10-50) (50x4 USD = 200 USD)
  • Other minor expenses for volunteers (1-2) during wikimeets and meeting with musea/institutions/governments (20-40) such as for example food or drinks (2x40x5 USD = 400 USD)
• Total Budget: 10.000 USD

Community engagement

• Community organised: Each Wikipedia organises its own project or if there is no local project people can join the project on meta
• Community run: Volunteers write the articles
• Offline wikimeets: Volunteers organise and meet with musea/institutes and governments
• Community media contact: Volunteers contact the media
• Community media attention: Volunteers are the centre of media attention
• Individual volunteers are thanked by musea/institutes and governments

Sustainability

• Local Wikipedia projects will be set up to organise this writing week. Also a global Writing Week project will exist on meta. These projects can organise future writing weeks on other topics.
  • Organisers gain experience in organising writing weeks and contacting media, musea/institutes and governments.
  • Wikipedians experience a writing week and can decide if they want to join future writing weeks.
  • For example, the Polish and Dutch Wikipedia have long running Writing Week Projects.
• Sponsors will be sought out to support future Wikipedia writing initiatives.
