Individual
A project to launch the new verified Language Wikiquote (Hausa Wikiquote). This project is created in-line with the aim of seeing changes in the Hausa Community and African Wikimedians towards achieving longer and larger projects for the growth of Wikimmedia in less representative communities. It will first cover a general event in all the 7 major Hausa Cities (Kaduna, Zaria, Katsina, Daura, Kano, Abuja and Bauchi) to launch the new Hausa Wikiquote, organize a series of mass workshops (in the stated cities) and create hundreds of contents thereby linking them to other Wikipedia Sister Projects (like Wikidata, Hausa Wikipedia, Hausa Wikitionary etc) and bring together Hausa Wikimedians to work on a common goal and discuss future plans and ideas towards coordination and growth of the Hausa Community.

Event overview

[edit]

Purpose and vision

Please give a brief description of the event you are planning. What do you hope to accomplish during the event? Why is this event important for your community?

This event centers on bringing Hausa Wikimedians to work on a common goal by launching the new Hausa Wikiquote, creating templates and contents on Hausa Wikiquote and discuss on future plans for the sustainance of quality and reliable work on the project. This project will also limit mass applications from the Hausa community, especially on Hausa Wikiquote as it will cover almost the entire major Hausa cities in Nigeria and will invite all the editors from different regions available on our usergroups on social media handles (whatsapp, Telegram, Twitter etc) thereby encouraging coordination and guidance.

Do you consider this to be a Regional; Thematic or Growth event? You can read more about each category here.

Regional, as it covers entire Hausa Community in Nigeria and other African states.

Is it a Remote, or in-person event? The event will be both Online (for the sake of Non-Nigerians and others) and in-person. PLACEHOLDER TEXT

Community input

[edit]

Use the results from the community engagement survey to fill in the table below. Since you cannot cover all topics or meet all needs at one event, prioritisation is important. Please rank the priority of each topic, skill, project or problem as high, medium or low. Finally, please answer the questions in the table below, if any of the questions are not relevant leave it blank.

Description Priority
Strategic discussions:

What are the top issues affecting your community that need to be discussed in person?

Lack of proper coordination, proper guidance and inclusion High
Capacity development:

Are there important skills that many people in your community need to learn?

As a new Wiki, most people have no or limited experience on Wikiquote, in terms of its scope and objectives. There's need for adequate training and guidance so as to avoid blunders and creating unreliable content. High
Working groups:

Are there joint projects that need to be planned in person?

No No
Community building:

Are there other in-person activities are important for community building?

Yes, the new Wikiquote will require atleast overseers and admins, this event will also determine people based on experience who are willing to manage and oversee the activities of the project. High

Survey analysis:

  1. How many people did you send the survey to? How many people responded to the survey?
  2. Did you see consensus around shared goals that this community wants to focus on in the next 12 months? What were the top 2 goals? yes
  3. Based on survey responses, what are the most important things your community should do at the conference to achieve those goals?

A) Creating Templates and designing Home Page

B) Training and Workshops i) Introduction to Wikiquote: which will cover the general scope of wikiquote, what Wikiquote is, among others.

Context

[edit]

It is helpful to get an understanding of why this event is important to your community, and what experiences you have had in the past. Please answer the applicable questions below.

1. What inspired your community to begin planning this event?
I happen to attend many virtual meetings with Wikimedia Foundation grant admins and there is always an emphasis on African Wikimedians in developing ideas for a more longer and larger projects that will bring a positive Impact to their communities and Wikipedia at large. so, after I with the consent of some Wikimedians apply for the new language Wiki, decided to work on a more diverse and larger work that will bring the community together in developing this new-baby project.
2. How does this event relate to other activities that your community is working on?
PLACEHOLDER TEXT
3. Do you have any Thematic or Regional committee or group? (Such as WISCom, CEE, Iberocoop, etc).
Yes, we have the Hausa Wikimedian Usergroup and Nigerian Common Photographer User Group

Plan

[edit]

Venue and Logistics

[edit]
1. Do you have any proposed venue for the event? If so, please share details (such as: how far is it from the airport or transportation hub; how close is it to the hotel, do you anticipate any challenges with using the space for the event you are planning?)
Due to current situation, we select Kano State which is peaceful and canbe accessed easily from all the Hausa Cities. We will also work on using suitable destination which will be easily accessed by everyone.
2. Is the event venue and hotel accessible for people with physical disabilities?
Yes
3. Are you planning to outsource some of the services? For example - a travel agency, an event production service?

Probably yes, based on the event location selected.

Friendly space policy

[edit]

Please link to the friendly space policy that your community will be using for this event.

Participation

[edit]

It is crucial that most participants have a minimum level of Wikimedia experience so that they can engage actively in workshops and discussions. Please answer all applicable questions below.

1. Please describe the target audience for this conference or event.
A total of 92 participants are active on our Hausa Wikimedian User Group on Whatsapp and some few in other community projects, thus,an estimation of atleast 50 experienced audience will be available for the project.
2. If your conference has an outreach component to also target non-wikimedian individuals or mission aligned institutions, can you explain your intention for this outreach (for example: how will you ensure engagement with these participants after the conference, and what impact do you see them having on the projects)?
We will add them to our existing Usergroups on Social Media handles
3. Are you thinking about collaborating with potential partners? Such as national; educational or thematic groups and organizations? If so, will this partnership be a financial one (such as sponsorship), or a visionary one (to collaborate in regards to the content of the event)? Please share some details if you have any.
We will invite a visitor (professional Hausa expert) to discuss on prominent quotes in the language and their impacts.
4. In which ways can Wikimedia Foundation staff support your event onsite? If you would like support, please list the different capacities in which we can support, or describe how you would like Wikimedia Foundation staff to be involved in the event. (Some examples of Wikimedia Foundation support or involvement might be: for outreach and communication efforts; to lead specific sessions; for legal or safety reasons, etc).

Scholarships

[edit]
1. How many scholarships would you like to offer and what expenses will the scholarship cover?
50
2. How will scholarship recipients be selected?
A survey will be created to measure the level of experience and willingness (new users) to continue volunteering towards achieving the Wikipedia Goals and Objectives
3. Do you plan to target or prioritize specific communities or participants?
Yes, many events have being created and several new editors were recruited but yet, very few continue contributing actively due to the fact that may be they are not educationist or have not being used to contributing towards the growth pf their communities, this project will hence focus on recruiting and engaging like-minded via the Interview Survey.
4. How will you insure diversity and inclusion in your scholarship process?
Applicants will be selected systematically based on location depending on the number of applications

Risks

[edit]

Examples of risks, along with how you would minimize or overcome them, are:

  • Components of the measurement process that are hard to quantify

Examples of how to minimize these risks include:

  • Recruiting volunteers with desired skills to project leadership team.
  • Working with the Wikimedia Foundation Learning & Evaluation Team to develop an appropriate measurement and evaluation plan.

Budget

[edit]

Please provide a detailed breakdown of project expenses according to the instructions here. See Budget Guidelines.

All past proposals can be found here, you can use these for inspiration and reference but you are required to do your own local research and come up with your own budget numbers. Keep in mind that each event is different, has local context and needs, and there is not a one-size-fits all for our communities events. While making decisions on what to fund we will consider the local context and community needs for each event.
