Grants:APG/Proposals/2020-2021 round 2/Wikimedia Indonesia/Impact report form

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Purpose of the report

[edit]

This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their results to date. For progress reports, the time period for this report will the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). For impact reports, the time period for this report will be the full 12 months of this grant, including the period already reported on in the progress report (e.g. 1 January - 31 December of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Introduction

Wikimedia Indonesia is willing to cover more than 700 languages and 300 ethnic groups across the island nations of Indonesia to get them available on the internet. Our five-year strategic planning from 2017-2022 emphasizes community development and support to achieve our goals. We believe by having a stronger community presence, we can build a more sustainable environment for nurturing the free knowledge culture. Although we are still in the pandemic, we try to be creative to build new communities and support and strengthen the established communities. We also invite and reach various organizations to get involved in Wikimedia movements and raise awareness about the importance of free knowledge. We believe by reaching out to various communities and organizations, Indonesian local content will be more enriched, and our movement can be more inclusive.

These efforts are in line with knowledge equity and to make the knowledge that we provided a primal service to open the various opportunities to our emerging community. We would like to ensure that the infrastructure and challenges will not limit our efforts to deliver knowledge to our community.

Education

Reflection on the second year of Education online activities

Our online activities organized during the pandemic have become a starting point for us to conduct offline activities the following year. Not only were we able to reach more people from various regions in Indonesia, but we also managed to engage some new participants to join our other activities, either activities held by Wikimedia Indonesia, or by the communities.

Online Meet-up (Temu Daring)

[edit]

Enabling our contributors and communities to stay connected is one of our priorities during the pandemic. Online Meet-up is a way for us to bridge the absence of a physical meeting. In this event, the contributors can edit various Wikipedia topics. Some editors even used the opportunity to edit other Wiki projects such as Wiktionary and Wikibooks. We organized this activity every two months, even though the communities usually also organized the event independently once a month. We appreciate the enthusiasm the contributors and communities show in participating in this event. Until the end of this year, along with the communities, we have organized 18 online meet-ups with more than 400 participants. WikiTraining (WikiLatih)

Regarding WikiLatih, our flagship program, we always have to think of ways to collaborate with partners. We offer WikiLatih in two different formats for flexibility reasons. With these different formats, the partners could choose the best suitable format that perfectly fits their needs and interests.

Online course (WikiLatih Daring)

[edit]

This year's online course has resulted in better outcomes than last year's. We managed to have 7 online courses this year. More than 400 people registered for the activities, forcing us to add more quota to the online courses (from 40 to 60 people every batch).

In the online course, we provided materials and sessions covering the basics of editing Wikipedia, from the steps to editing Wikipedia, the rules and policies on Wikipedia, communities, Wikipedia behavioral guidelines, Wikimedia Commons, and Creative Commons License. We also assisted participants in writing articles. Our team gave every assignment and article submitted by the participants' feedback. This way, they could identify their mistakes and revise them. The numbers of people who managed to complete the course this year from each batch are as follows: (VI) 22 out of 42 participants successfully completed the course, (VII) 17 out of 39 participants successfully completed the course, (VIII) 29 out of 62 participants successfully completed the course, (IX) 30 out of 61 participants successfully completed the course, (X) 37 out of 60 participants successfully completed the course, (XI) 28 out of 63 participants successfully completed the course, (XII) 29 out of 62 participants successfully completed the course. As we have seen from the numbers, the percentage of participants that completed the course is always around 50% out of all the participants who joined the course. A certificate of completion was given to those who completed the course and souvenirs from Wikimedia Indonesia.

After the courses were completed, we encouraged the participants to join a group to keep themselves up-to-date with our activities. Many of the participants who completed the courses continued to join our other events.

Live (WikiLatih Kilat)

[edit]

A simplified format of our WikiLatih Daring (online course) is our WikiLatih Kilat (Live). The event is in two sessions, 2 hours each, by Zoom. We usually had 20-25 participants that join this event. As usual, during the sessions, we explain about Wikimedia, the movement, and the basics of editing on Wikipedia. The materials were not as comprehensive as our online course, but they were enough to give some "sneak peek" at wiki projects and the movement. The participants also had the opportunity to try out some basic editing features, and create new articles.

This year, we encouraged the communities to have their own WikiLatih Live, especially focusing on their local language Wikipedia. We also persuaded them to use their local languages as the medium of instruction during the activity. This is what made this event quite different and more interesting. There were also quizzes at the end of each WikiLatih Live activity with prizes to appreciate the participants and make them more motivated to participate and contribute to our other activities.

From July 2021 to June 2022, we had 12 WikiLatih Live events. We had 10 WikiLatih Live events organized by the communities (Javanese, Nias, Sundanese, Minangkabau, Medan, Mandailing), 1 WikiLatih Live event organized by Wikimedia Indonesia in collaboration with our partner, EngageMedia, and 1 WikiLatih Live event organized by Wikimedia Indonesia in collaboration with National Commission on Human Rights. Advanced (WikiLatih Daring Mahir)

Online Advanced WikiLatih is a two-hour online WikiLatih aimed at contributors who had mastered basic Wikipedia editing skills and wanted to improve their editing skills using codes. Therefore, this training focuses more on source editing, which is considered more “advanced” now since new editors nowadays tend to use the Visual Editor more than source editing. In this event, an experienced Wikipedia editor will guide the participants throughout the session by delivering materials that cover basic formatting using codes, templates, info boxes, and image galleries

This year, Online Advanced WikiLatih has been organized 4 times, and the participants were mostly alumni of the previous online courses. This is because we usually organize this event one or two weeks after an online course is completed or two sessions of WikiLatih Live are finished because we want the participants of those activities to join this event.

Mini Training of Trainers (WikiPelatih Mini)

[edit]

Mini WikiPelatih 2021 is an activity whose purpose is to gather the active volunteers of Wikimedia Indonesia who contribute to Wiki projects and also Wikimedia Indonesia activities, to enable them to learn new things and to connect with each other by sharing their stories and experiences.

The event was divided into two sessions, with a duration of 2,5 hours for each session. The participants were given some materials that were related to Open Educational Resources (OER), The Wikipedia Library (TWL), and information literacy on the internet. In this event, we facilitated a group discussion, and we also had a Q&A session.

We opened a registration form for this event, and after a selection process, we had 44 participants attending this event. Even though the event went well and the attendees participated enthusiastically, we have not been able to measure the level of impact this activity had for the participants and our program in a more certain way.

WikiGuidebook (WikiPanduan)

[edit]

At the beginning of this year's WikiGuidebook program, we proofread some local language modules to ensure the quality of the translation, they are Banjarese, Gorontalo, Madurese, and Nias language modules. One volunteer from each of the communities was involved to do the proofreading. At the end of the year, we managed to finish the layout and the design of these four modules. These modules are now available on Commons and also in print.

In addition to the local language modules, we localized the three Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom series by the Education Team of Wikimedia Foundation into Indonesian this semester. The localization process took place from August to October by two volunteers of ours. We were also in touch with the Education Team of WMF to ensure we were on the right track with the localization because we also had to ensure that the modules would best suit the needs of the teachers or educators in Indonesia. At the end of this year's program, the modules are already available on Commons and in print.

Webinar (WikiWebinar)

[edit]

One important thing we were aware of and needed to address was various misconceptions about Wikipedia in education, especially at the high school and college levels. For this reason, we had the initiative to organize an online seminar entitled "Wikipedia's Misconceptions in Education" which is open to the public. We had 4 academics and experts in their fields who were also active contributors to the Indonesian and local language Wikipedia to provide their perspectives on the misconceptions of Wikipedia that had been circulating in society or the Education field. There were 447 people registered for this event, and there were 173 participants who joined the event from various backgrounds: teachers, scholars, students, etc.

Another Webinar that we had this year was a webinar that we organized in collaboration with Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA). UNDIRA would like to learn more about Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia, and the correct way of gathering information from Wikipedia, mainly for their students. The title for this webinar was “Can We Quote Wikipedia?”, which is the most common question asked by many students and academics. We have a volunteer who is a senior Wikipeda editor to deliver the material during this session. There were 86 participants that attended this webinar, consisting of lecturers and students from UNDIRA.

Office Hour (Bincang PDK-Komunitas)

[edit]

Office Hour, or what we usually call "Bincang PDK-Komunitas WMID (Community-Education Talk)" is an attempt to provide our community members and volunteers a space for them to discuss anything with the Education team of Wikimedia Indonesia. The session also provides us with a space to deliver information to the community members and volunteers. Office Hour is usually organized on Friday evening, every once in a while.

This year, we only held three Office Hours for our communities. In the first session, we talked about our Education program and how the communities and contributors could participate. In the second session, we talked about partnership and collaboration. We gave our community members and volunteers an explanation of the steps that they would need to take if they ever wanted to have a partnership or collaboration with Wikimedia Indonesia. We discussed the Welcoming Newcomers feature for our local language Wikipedia communities in the third session. We invited Benoît (Trizek) from the Growth Team of the Wikimedia Foundation to deliver a presentation about the Welcoming Newcomer feature that had recently been deployed on local language Wikis.

The three sessions of Office Hour are usually followed by Q&A, as well as discussion sessions. So far, the Office Hour sessions have been highly informative and interactive. We hope that in the following semester, we can continue to have Office Hour every two months in an attempt to communicate with our communities.

Online Talk Show (Gelar Wicara) and Instagram Live

[edit]

Online Talk Show is an event where we invite several volunteers to share their stories or experiences and broadcast them on one of our social media channels. This year's first online talk show was back in July. We invited 4 alumni of the Education internship program to share their stories about when they did the offline and online internships. This also became our opportunity to promote our internship program to the public. Then the second talk show we had was in August. We invited the winner of the Best Newcomer Award of Wikimania 2021, Carma Citrawati, from the Wikimedia Indonesia Community in Denpasar (Bali). She shared her experience of digitizing and translating Balinese lontar manuscripts and developing WikiPustaka.

In the second semester, we had Instagram Lives. Our second semester's interns organized them. The first Instagram Live had both of them talking about one of our activities, Online Course. They invited other interns from GLAM Wikimedia Indonesia who participated in the Online Course to share their experiences. In the second Instagram Live, our interns invited other interns from other projects, GLAM and Technology, to talk about their internship experiences.

We had a lot of fun organizing Instagram Lives despite the technical difficulties. We think it is a simple and easy way to reach more people, especially those who are students looking for an internship opportunity. By involving our next interns, we plan to organize more lives that touch on different subjects that are still related to our program or Wikimedia movement in general.

WikiGap - Women's Wiki Month 2022

[edit]

"This event has made me aware that the number of articles on women figures on Indonesian Wikipedia was still so small. I hope that WikiGap also enables readers to gain more information about women figures on Wikipedia."

Miernalarasati (the editor of the best article on WikGap I-2022)

"I also have this feeling that the amount of information available about women on Wikipedia was still small once I saw the list of women figures that we were about to edit or create. Therefore, by participating in WikiGap 2022, I at least have contributed to closing the gender gap on the internet."

Nurhidayah Tanjung (the editor of the best article on WikGap II-2022)

As a part of our aim to close the gender gap on Wikipedia, in March 2022, we organized our annual activity, WikiGap. The WikiGap event was organized as a part of a series of events in our Women's Wiki Month 2022. As a part of this event, we collaborated with the Swedish Embassy in Jakarta.

For Women's Wiki Month 2022, we had an opening session in which we invited the Ambassador of the Swedish Embassy, Mrs. Marina Berg, and the Education Officer of Wikimedia Sweden, Josefine Herlloth Larsson, to give a speech.

This year's WikiGap was held in two sessions: WikiGap I on March 7 & 10, and WikiGap II on March 14 & 17. The participants of this year's WikiGap were more than 70 people who proceeded to edit and write articles about women's figures on Indonesian Wikipedia. The committee then chose the 6 best articles out of 52 articles. While the editors of the top articles from each session, Miernalarasati, and Nurhidayah Tanjung, got invited to have a special lunch session at the Embassy of Sweden in Jakarta.

On March 31, Wiki Women's Month ended. We had a closing session that we broadcasted on YouTube in which we invited the representative of the Embassy of Sweden, two participants of WikiGap, and one of the trainers for the WikiGap event to share their stories of WikiGap and Wiki Women's Month.

Education Internship (Magang Pendidikan)

[edit]

"In my opinion, the internship program of Wikimedia Indonesia offers a very flexible working time. It enabled me to easily manage my study and internship time!"

Haekal Rheza Afandi, Education intern

"My favorite part of my internship period in Wikimedia Indonesia was when I had to organize Instagram Live! It was a new experience for me! Being able to speak live in front of many people was really fun!"

Rahmasari Putri Azzahra, Education intern
We had two batches of Education Internships this year. Each batch lasted for 3 months. During the internship period, the interns were involved in various activities organized by the Education Team of Wikimedia Indonesia.

Our first internship program was held online. Our intern was mainly in charge of organizing the process of proofreading the translation results of our modules for the Madurese, Nias, Gorontalo, and Banjarese languages. He was responsible for contacting our volunteers, giving directions on proofreading, supervising the entire process, and reporting back to the Education team. Apart from his main responsibility to handle the module proofreading process, he was also involved in many other activities to develop his capacity to communicate with other volunteers of Wikimedia Indonesia, such as community meetings, online WikiLatih, and online meet-ups. He was also given opportunities to deliver materials for our online course to our participants to improve his public speaking skills.

In the second batch, we had our internship program for 3 months, in a hybrid format. The interns must also come to our office at least twice a week. Our interns were mostly in charge of our social media content, organizing Instagram Lives, and writing our activity documentation and blog posts. They also participated in our other activities to grow their connections with other volunteers. Both of them also delivered materials for our online courses to the participants. Thus, they were able to improve their communication skills.

Lesson learned

[edit]
Establishing communication with volunteers and involving them in our activities is a priority
[edit]

Our physical ability to see each other during our online phase was limited. Some of our communities got a few new members to join their communities, and others did not have the same luck. It was difficult to establish a bond within the communities, between the old members and the new members during the online stage. However, the Education team of Wikimedia Indonesia tried to keep in touch with some volunteers by involving them in our activities and the person in charge.

Looking back to the evaluation of the previous program is significant
[edit]

It is not a bad thing to look back and learn from the experience once in a while. The Education team of Wikimedia Indonesia kept the evaluation results and participant surveys of our previous activities close. We always tried to look for what we lacked in our previous activities to improve our next ones.

Competition

[edit]
[edit]

"I often translate or write articles in internet cafes because my handphone is not good enough. The uncomfortable atmosphere and internet usage limitations make me rush to submit articles and not focus enough. This problem happened to me because I don’t have a laptop. But, I decided not to give up and keep fighting to the end of the competition."

SyahRamadhan

"During the competition, we write on several topics. Also, I learned many ways to translate. Being able to speak and write in English is insufficient to make you a good translator. I have to learn new idioms, difficult metaphors, and how to paraphrase."

Hrara

Proyek Jatayu is a competition held by Wikimedia Indonesia to provide comprehensive articles, mainly about financial technology, critical thinking, food and agriculture, and physical and mental health, to Indonesian Wikipedia readers throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. We are concerned that these topics are not well covered in Indonesian Wikipedia, as many changes during the pandemic affect our lives and people seeking information to handle them.

Throughout five months, 46 participants together expanded 1.940 existing articles and created 568 new articles in this competition. The results are better than the previous competition, WikiJelajah 2.0, but still not reaching our best. We may presume volunteers fatigued from another writing competition with a similar format.

In the second half of this competition, participants begin to submit their good articles. Eleven participants submitted good articles on diverse topics. The score difference between good articles is relatively tight.

WikiTeroka 3.0 - Growing Collaboration Spirit between Contributors

[edit]

Besides Indonesian Wikipedia, we have 13 regional language Wikipedias across the Indonesian region, from Minangkabau to Gorontalo. However, unlike Indonesian Wikipedia, which has a substantial number of contributors, regional language Wikipedia has only a handful. WikiTeroka has organized to address that issue, to preserve the enthusiasm of the old contributors in parallel with attracting new contributors to the regional language Wikipedia. This year was our third WikiTeroka.

WikiTeroka 3.0 used a new concept, different from the previous event. We are focused on growing the collaborative spirit between volunteers to expand an article. WikiTeroka 3.0 was conducted in five local Wikipedias: Sundanese, Javanese, Minangkabau, Gorontalo, and Banjar. At the end of the event, 29 participants together expanded five articles in five local languages. Compared to previous WikiTerokas, this year's event was an improvement in terms of participant numbers. Still, it could be better because we have limitations regarding promotion. Still, it could be better because we have limitations regarding promotion. We are not reaching many contributors outside our communities caused of lacking in-person events.

Formosa-Nusantara Challenge - Strengthening Inter-Wikimedia Affiliates Relationship

[edit]

Formosa-Nusantara Challenge is a writing challenge in Indonesian and Mandarin Wikipedia about various Indonesian and Taiwan-related topics. Wikimedia Indonesia and Wikimedia Taiwan managed this challenge. We conducted this challenge because Taiwan topics in Indonesian Wikipedia and vice versa still need improvements.

This challenge runs for 1,5 months from 1 April to 15 Mei 2022. The fifteen fastest participants who wrote six articles minimum got exclusive souvenirs from Wikimedia Indonesia or Taiwan. Overall, 13 participants in Indonesia and Taiwan completed the challenge, and 147 articles on Indonesian and Taiwan-related topics were created in Indonesian and Mandarin Wikipedia.

Formosa-Nusantara Challenge is our second event with Wikimedia Taiwan after an online talk show about GLAM institutions in September 2021. We hope this collaboration bolsters relations between affiliates and inspires similar cooperation in the ESEAP region.

Wiki Loves Earth Indonesia - A Showcase of Our Nature

[edit]

Since 2017, Wikimedia Indonesia has organized Wiki Loves Earth Indonesia continuously, except in 2018. In the fifth Wiki Loves Earth Indonesia, we remained to limit the scope only to the protected area of Indonesia, i.e., nature reserves, national parks, marine parks, protected forests, and tourism parks. The competition has two main categories, a natural landscape and a close-up of species.

At the end of the competition period, we managed to earn 1.033 photos from 423 participants. However, we only chose a few images for the final selection by the jury. Feri Latief, one of the juries, appreciated stricter standards imposed by the committee to select decent photos, which resulted in better photo quality.

Like the previous Wiki Loves Earth, many good photos, especially close-up photos, did not include the location or coordinates of the photo taken in the description, so there is no way we can verify if the images were taken in the protected area. We already stated in the rules that participants must disclose the photograph's location in the description, but some participants may not read the directions thoroughly.

In addition, there are issues regarding the definitions of protected areas in Indonesia. We are using Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems to define what are protected areas in Indonesia. However, as the law is outdated, several new types of protected areas in Indonesia are not stated. In the next Wiki Loves Earth, redefining the definition of protected areas is necessary based on the newer regulations derived from the Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems Law.

Next step

[edit]

After five years of conducting several Wikipedia writing contests, we understand that people are wearied of another similar event. Also, writing encyclopedia content is not well known to Indonesians, which is more profound to creative writing, as many writing communities focus on fiction or bedtime stories. It's an untapped opportunity that we missed before. We may introduce one of our projects, Wikibooks, to them as a platform to share their work. It also benefits Indonesian WikiBooks communities, which lack contributors and quality content. We planned to introduce a competition in the WikiBooks in the next year after organizing several WikiLatih about WikiBooks.

Besides that, it's essential to keep our movement inclusive for all people. Unlike English Wikipedia, that have 1.644 spoken articles created in the Spoken Wikipedia Wikiproject, Indonesian Wikipedia only has a handful of spoken articles. Spoken articles are necessary for visually impaired people. Even if there is a screen reader, spoken articles may have better accuracy in terms of intonation or emphasis on main points. One of our initiatives is to start Spoken Wikipedia in Indonesian Wikipedia in a competition form. Creating a spoken article is not an easy task. It would be necessary to give them an incentive for the first time.

Community

[edit]
Gathering Volunteers Again in WikiNusantara After Pended Two Year

In this second semester, Wikimedia Indonesia finally decided to allow an in-person event after two years of the Covid-19 pandemic. In Padang City, West Sumatra, on June 4-5, 2022, the WikiNusantara conference became the first volunteer gathering for years to come. Although there were strict health requirements for attending it, 67 people joined the conference. Finally, it was a joy that volunteers across Indonesia could meet in person again, and the event went successfully.

Community Meeting

[edit]

Thirteen communities got Wikimedia Indonesia's support during this period. One of the support given was a subsidy of phone credit for holding an online meeting each month. The phone credit was worth IDR 50.000 for each meeting participant. Ten communities were actively claiming this support this semester by regularly holding monthly meetings. The ten communities were: Bandung, Denpasar, Jakarta, Medan, Padang, Yogyakarta, Banjar, Gorontalo, and Nias.

Besides, Wikimedia Indonesia also gave phone credit support for a community contact person and a meeting coordinator for each community. For a contact person, the subsidy was worth IDR 200.000. Meanwhile, for a meeting coordinator, the subsidy was worth IDR 100.000. The different responsibilities between the contact person and the meeting coordinator made the subsidy valued differently.

Internet Package Grant

[edit]

The Internet Package Grant was a program that granted each volunteer a phone credit worth IDR 200.000 each month. Volunteers must meet certain requirements to be eligible for this grant. Upon receiving the grant, volunteers must complete the given task of editing 30.000 bytes in certain Wikimedia projects. This semester, on average, there were 34 people granted this phone credit every month. This program was stable, so no adjustments were made on this program during this semester.

Book Grant

[edit]

The Book Grant program granted each volunteer a book worth IDR 150.000 every two months. This program was opened each month. The requirements for this program were similar to the Internet Package Grant. The task for the recipients of this grant was editing 30.000 bytes in Wikipedias of Indonesian languages. Around 10 volunteers were granted this grant every month this semester.

Online Scholarship

[edit]

The Online Scholarship was a program that granted one volunteer or a group of volunteers a fund between IDR 500.000 and IDR 6.000.000 to hold an online editing event. There was not any adjustment to this program for this semester. Thirteen proposals were granted the fund when the program was opened between February and April. In total, 24 volunteers participated in this program.

WikiNusantara Conference

[edit]

After waiting two years, Wikimedia Indonesia held an in-person conference again. The canceled WikiNusantara 2020 in Padang was finally realized in 2022 in the same city. Organizing the conference, the committee was divided into three teams: Event, Logistics, and Communications. The Scholarship Team was not there because there were not any scholarship-related tasks. The committee just carried out what the past Scholarship Team had done, including the list of all scholarship recipients.

In total, there were 67 people participating in this conference, and 29 topics were presented during the event.

Lesson learned

[edit]

The community programs seem to already have a stable grounding. However, it is better to still evaluate them so that they can be carried out more efficiently and effectively. One improvement that should be considered is time management. The Community Meeting, the Internet Package Grant, and the Book Grant were opened every month and took up a whole month to work. The Online Scholarship usually took at least five months from preparation to completion, and so did WikiNusantara. However, WikiNusantara should be considered a special occasion because it spent more staff energy than other programs. Given that, Online Scholarship and WikiNusantara were better not to share months or were put into different semesters. Besides, there should be one month spare at the end of each semester to summarize and evaluate the programs of the semester.

GLAM

[edit]
Anchored back in face-to-face activities

In GLAM 2021, our activities were online. This provided many opportunities to see what new things needed to be done. For example, strengthening data on the GLAM network in Indonesia. In collaboration with the Wikidata team and technology interns, GLAM Indonesia has managed to create a map of the GLAM network in Indonesia. We hope that this can be the basic information and digitization of GLAM. Meanwhile, from publications, we have published a guide on contributing to Wikimedia Commons.

Not only commemorating public domain day in Indonesia. GLAM Indonesia also commemorates International Museum Day, a Wikimedia Foundation and ICOM program. This opportunity is a time to complete museum articles on Wikipedia, museum data on Wikidata, and complete structured data and improve descriptions of Indonesian museum collections on Wikimedia Commons.

Hoping that GLAM activities will run in person in the next period, the GLAM Team will make visits for outreach again for GLAM digitization in several places in Indonesia, especially in eastern Indonesia.

GLAM Indonesia's activities for one year (July 2021 to June 2022) were online. We did this while the pandemic was still ongoing, and from the beginning of the planning, the activities we created were mostly online.

  • Broadly speaking, the activities during this APG21 period include:
  • Webinars (Bincang GLAM and Indonesia Menulis)
  • 1Lib1Ref Workshop and Campaign
  • Wikisource Workshop, Meetup, and Competition
  • GLAM Internships
  • Commemoration of Public Domain Day and International Museum Day
  • Publishing Wikimedia Commons guide booklet
  • Creating a GLAM Network Map of Indonesia

Given that activities are almost entirely online, the process of digitization in the field was certainly difficult to implement. GLAM Indonesia focuses on the visibility of digitized collections by completing and improving the description of Dutch-language collections from GLAM Netherlands, adding depict, and captioning museum photo collections through ISA campaigns for better metadata.

Partnerships

[edit]

Online activities carried out by GLAM Indonesia at APG21 continue to involve various parties in its implementation. Activities such as Webinars, 1Lib1Ref Workshops, the commemoration of Public Domain Day, and International Museum Day invited several parties.

As of June 2022, we have collaborated with 8 institutions:

  • Wikimedia Nederland
  • Goethe-Institut Indonesien
  • D'Topeng Kingdom Group, Jawa Timur
  • Creative Commons Indonesia, DKI Jakarta
  • Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Jawa Tengah
  • Komunitas Pustakawan Mendunia, Jakarta
  • Universitas Muhammadiyah, Sumatera Utara
  • Forum Perpustakaan Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah Aisyiyyah, Yogyakarta

1lib1ref workshops and campaigns

[edit]

In addition to the museum activities, we wanted to give more attention to librarians in Indonesia to participate in Wikimedia projects. We organized a Wikipedia editing training specifically for librarians to learn how to incorporate references into articles. We reached out to colleagues who work in libraries and invited their institutions to join #1lib1ref. From early February to April 2021, Medan Area University Library, IAIN Bengkulu Library, and the Forum of Indonesian Higher Education Libraries (FPPTI) in East Java participated in our online event to introduce Wikipedia and correct misconceptions spread among higher education academics.

The May-June 2021 #1lib1ref campaign is the first campaign in that Wikimedia Indonesia has participated. In the middle of the APG20 semester, this campaign began with socialization with librarians from several libraries through a workshop. However, in this campaign, GLAM Indonesia still opened this campaign to the public. Participants with the most contributions received souvenirs from the Wikimedia Foundation, and some received certificates of participation.

Wikisource Competition

[edit]

The Wikisource Competition 2021 is the third competition that Wikimedia Indonesia has organized. We held this competition to provide awareness and introduce Wikisource to the public as Wikipedia's sister project. Wikisource contributors are expected to increase after this competition ends, and participants who participate in the contest gain new experience in editing Wikimedia projects.

The Wikisource Competition 2021 experienced an increase in the number of participants and test-read books. A total of 40 participants and 17 books were provided for the competition participants to test read. Most of them were new Wikisource users and tried their best to proofread the books. The competition was won by participants from Bali, namely Kadek Ayu Sulastri as the first winner, and user Ulumarifah as the second winner. The first-place winner received a laptop, and the second-place winner received a tablet. We gave souvenirs to the participants to encourage them and as a memento from Wikimedia Indonesia. We hope that in 2022 the number of Wikisource competition participants will increase and become a stepping stone to increasing active users of the Indonesian-language Wikisource.

From the survey results that we distributed to the participants, 54% of the participants said that they were very happy with the proofreading process on Wikisource. Another 31% found the proofreading quite fun, while 15% found Wikisource proofreading to be tolerable at best.

We were pleased about the 2021 Wikisource Competition because 62% of the participants found the Wikisource proofreading easy. Our goal with the 2021 Wikisource Competition is to increase the number of active contributors who are happy to proofread the available texts so that GLAM Indonesia's digitalization results benefit the public, especially Indonesian Wikisource contributors, to develop this online project.

Lesson learned

[edit]

Over the past year, we are grateful to the competition participants and partners who have participated in the activities organized by GLAM Indonesia. Our team tried our best to provide assistance in every workshop we held. However, we realize that technical issues hinder the implementation of the activities.

We found that uploading other people's media became a bottleneck for archives when they tried to upload the media on Wikimedia Commons. This is due to the VRT verification system that is unfamiliar to archival institutions in Indonesia. We tried to explain the steps of sending an email to the VRT system so that the copyright status of the media is clear. Unfortunately, our archive institution found obstacles in contacting the copyright owner, so the media uploaded to Wikimedia Commons could not be accepted because they did not get permission from the copyright owner.

While conducting the Wikisource Competition 2021, we received many feedback from participants through the survey. From the 13 responses we received, most of the participants had difficulties using the templates in Wikisource Indonesian language. This is because most of the competition participants are users who have never edited Wikisource and are active Wikipedia users. When editing page by page, they said that the use of certain templates in Wikisource could not be followed or did not know how to use them. This was coupled with the explanation from the GLAM Indonesia team as the competition organizer, which, according to them, was not clear enough. Previously, the GLAM Indonesia team organized the GLAM Indonesia Weekly Talk on YouTube and presented matters related to Wikisource, with the hope that competition participants could watch the live recording before starting to participate in the competition.

Wikidata

[edit]
2021

The Wikidata program underwent the year with several difficulties, but nevertheless, it ended with the successful establishment of the Indonesian Wikidata Community as one of the communities officially supported by Wikimedia Indonesia. We are very grateful to our community and volunteers who have dedicated their time to our events so far and expressed their enthusiasm personally to some of the staff in our chapter. Our events of training and online meet-ups have all been helped by volunteers. We also conducted an internship program, and a data visualization competition, and repeated the collaboration with our chapter’s education team for Wiki Women's Month.

However, this is the moment which we will need to keep and improve for the future. The community is still relatively small, but they are here, and with the pandemic getting slowly out of the prowl, we will be able to involve them directly in our events.

Trainings and Workshops

[edit]

All of the training this year are helped by volunteers of regular Wikidata editors from Indonesia. Some were even former participants in previous training, while others were already editing and had learned WIkidata by themselves outside of our events. Similar to our events in the first semester, it was still difficult to find willing volunteers, but nevertheless, we managed to hold five training in the second semester, which brings the total number of training of this year to seven, still below our target of ten. In the second semester, we managed to hold five training but without any workshops with universities. This enabled us to focus our effort and resources on preparing the materials and other requirements for the training. This includes volunteers.

In involving our volunteers, we realized the limitations in the number and availability of each person. However, most of our events were conducted on weekends. We also intended to not repeatedly use the same person as a volunteer so that everyone has their own turn participating. In the first semester, we involved seven different persons as volunteers, two in each training and workshop. In the second semester, for the training, we involved nine different persons to be a volunteer, two in each training except one training in May 2022, where we managed to only get one volunteer. Selecting possible volunteers is a little bit of a more difficult question. To get one to agree to participate, we usually messaged them directly through our Wikidata groups in messaging apps or announced in the groups that we need a volunteer for the next event. The first method is every time a throwing-a-dice moment is possible, volunteers may not be available for the event. Still, we managed to get some of them through this method. The second method is more beneficial as an interested contributor would message us, but it tended to attract the same person several times. To mitigate this, we added in our announcement that we prioritize contributors without prior experience as a volunteer in our previous events. Each method had its advantages, but we tend to try the first one as we prefer to be closer to our community members. Most notable of the two methods are these: using the first method, we found that one of the Madurese contributors was an excellent explainer of our materials even though we did not know that they were that eloquent. In using the second method, we found a Sundanese contributor who was also an excellent speaker at the event. But as with good outcomes, there are still some contributors who were not as good as we expected, but they were trying their best, and we were content enough that they agreed to participate in the frame of limitations of numbers that we mentioned before. Training of volunteers in the future may be needed to increase the capacity of our community.

Datathons

[edit]

Our Datathons in the second semester continued to be held. Our annual New Year Datatahon finished in January, and a collaboration with the Education team on our second Wiki Women’s Month in March, where participants contributed data regarding Indonesian women. We still used the article-scoped program option on the Outreach Dashboard and used Petscan query for the items tracked. The Wiki Women's Month for the education team was actually in partnership with the Swedish Embassy in Jakarta, and around April, they contacted us to invite the winner of the datathon for a meet-up with the vice ambassador of Sweden. Our datathons still managed to gather the most contributions to Wikidata.

Online meet-ups, competition, and social media

[edit]

Our online meet-ups were getting more expected by the community each time we hold them. The event is still fairly simple, but we often accompanied it with a little lesson on tools and queries to the participants. In some events, the participants were even required to list their queries. This makes some of them inquire even more about queries to us, who were present at the meet-ups, and make them keen on utilizing Wikidata. We also noticed frequent names who come to the meet-ups multiple times. We, therefore, held our Data Visualization Competition (Kompetisi Penyajian Data), where participants made their own visualizations using data from Wikidata to be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons. Our social media quiz continued to the second semester, but as the Wikidata community formed, it will be handled continually later by our volunteers as the Indonesian Wikidata Community social media account.

Internships

[edit]

We held another internship program this second semester, hiring seven interns to work for two months. They were divided into four teams whose tasks differed but were given general knowledge of Wikidata and the Wikimedia movement beforehand. The first team of one was tasked to adapt an Indonesian version of the site of Heritage Map made by Wikimedia Society of the Philippines using data from Wikidata and OpenStreetMap. The result was two sites accessible here on GLAM sites in Indonesia and here on cultural heritage sites in Indonesia. The second team of two was tasked to develop a learning platform to be used in the training and educational program of Wikimedia Indonesia. The result was a first deployment of an LMS using Moodle on our site. However, the platform was still under construction by the time their internship period was over, so we still need to develop it further before utilizing it in our events. The third team of three was tasked to explore the Indonesian data quality in Wikidata and the Indonesian data sources possible to be imported into Wikidata. They were tasked to explore data on GLAM institutions, transportation hubs, and the ECCC program in Canada. The fourth team of one was tasked to help us with our events, such as meet-ups and training, and our social media account. They were also tasked to review and advise on our campaign strategies and promotion.

This program was also challenging for the two of us on the Wikidata team in Wikimedia Indonesia. Hiring seven interns simultaneously was never done before by either two of us. However, the interns were quick learners and enthusiastic about Wikidata and implementing their various backgrounds into their work. Both of us, as employers and interns, were learning in this program, and we are proud that some of them are still active in Wikidata and livid about having the experience of working in a Wikimedia affiliate.

Lesson learned

[edit]

We are very proud that after several years of working with Wikidata with the Indonesian community, it has formed the Indonesian Wikidata community as one of the communities supported by Wikimedia Indonesia. With various backgrounds, interests, and geographical locations, our community becomes the second project-specific community under WMID, and we are also very grateful that they are very open to communication with us. Our social media accounts are now to be handled by the community, and they have filled it with various contents regarding Wikidata. We are also very grateful to our interns for their work and patience while being under our supervision.
