Wiki Goes Caribbean meeting - lockdown style

The Netherlands went into lockdown mid March. The WMNL office closed, all in real life WMNL events were cancelled until further notice. The last major in-person event was on March 7: a successful Wiki-Saturday in honour of international women’s day, which brought together 50 people for workshops, lightning presentations and editing.

When the lockdown began, as office staff we expected to run out of work after three weeks and had already prepared a list of chores to do, such as finally cleaning up our Google Drive. However, it turned out we were able to continue implementing quite a lot of our 2020 work plan by moving activities online. We were just as busy as always, perhaps even more so.

We continued online with Wiki-Saturdays, training seminars, regular meetings with our partners’ GLAM-WIKI coordinators, and the writing events that we organise regularly in the framework of our gender gap and Wiki-Goes-Caribbean programmes.

Going online proved to have some advantages. These were most obvious for Wiki-Goes-Caribbean, where Wikimedians based in the Dutch Caribbean could join the Zoom-meetings and interact directly with the participants based in the Netherlands who usually attend the in-person writing event. (Why we had not thought of this before?) We also saw more participation in Wiki Saturday events, as people did not have to make the trip to Utrecht - and perhaps were eager for some social interaction.

Our GLAM partners the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Bibliotheca Nacional di Aruba, the Museum of World Cultures and the Utrecht Archives donated valuable content to Wikimedia Commons.

A planned activitiy with the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to analyse how contributing content to the Wikimedia projects contributes to the Netherland official Digital Heritage Reference Architecture went ahead as planned and is providing interesting insights for further cooperation.

As lockdown restrictions did not affect our ability to offer internships to students of the College for Translators, the translation programme blossomed in the first semester. No fewer than 6 interns started translating (featured) articles from Italian, English and German Wikipedia.

Other news: Dutch language Wikipedia saw its 2-millionth article, a veteran-Wikimedian received a royal honour, WMNL facilitated a community-discussion on privacy and data about living people on the Wikimedia projects, we raised funds to do work on the sustainable development goals, and two national newspapers wrote feature-length articles about Wikipedia.

Although lockdown restrictions have by now (July 2020) been to a large extent lifted or eased, we are still holding back from organising in-person events, especially those involving a lot of people like the annual Wikicon-NL and the summer barbecue. In September, we will reassess this policy based on government guidelines and directions from WMF. The office has reopened for staff but enforces strict rules concerning distancing and hygiene.

Focus on diversity

[edit]

The global Wikimedia Strategic Direction 2030 reinforces our decision to focus on diversity, both in terms of content and within the community. We are working on free content that is relevant to readers of Wikimedia projects worldwide, not just in the Netherlands. We also support the pursuit of a diverse community of Wikimedia editors in the Netherlands.

Gender Gap

[edit]

The aim is to enrich information by, for and about women in order to reduce the unequal (re) presentation of content on Wikiprojects between men and women, and to motivate more women to contribute to Wikipedia.

International Women's Day WikiSaturday - March 7th

International women’s day Wiki Saturday

As part of International Women's Day, Wikimedia Nederland organised a special Gender Gap WikiSaturday on March 7. During this WikiSaturday, 50 Wikimedians met at the office of Wikimedia Nederland in Utrecht, followed introductory workshops and gave presentations on reducing the gender gap. For most participants, this was their first introduction to Wikimedia projects. There was no lack of media attention. A  reporter from national newspaper Volkskrant was present who wrote about it in her column, and the following Monday Wikipedian Ciell was interviewed on national radio.

  • National Museum of World Cultures donated more than 800 images as part of International Women's Day 2020
Embroidered women's shift - image from the Josephine Powell collection

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the National Museum of World Cultures donated a collection of 851 images by photographer and collector Josephine Powell. Thanks to Josephine Powell's thorough and systematic way of collecting, the National Museum of World Cultures has more than 3,000 objects from the communities in which she stayed.

  • Attention for Wikipedia during Hengelo Book Ballad

Wikikring Twente, which usually meets at the Hengelo public library, was asked to tell something about Wikipedia and in particular about biographies of women from Twente during the Book Ballad event on 8 March in Metropolis Hengelo. Wikikring Twente participant Antje51 put three women in the spotlight: Miriam Guensberg, Femy Efftink and Harmke de Boer-Baltjes.

  • (Online) WikiFridays gender gap and LGBT issues

We joined forces with our partners Atria, the knowledge institute for emancipation and women's history, and IHLIA, the international archive for LGBT heritage, to organise online WikiFridays (WikiVrijdagen) during the corona pandemic. Prior to the corona crisis, Atria and IHLIA each organised their own offline WikiFriday in their library in Amsterdam. In order to be able to organize the WikiFridays online, these meetings have now been merged. There have now been two meetings with about 17 participants. The content was attuned to topics pre-selected by  the participants. For example, there was an introduction about editing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, an explanation about the use of sources and an interview for more experienced Wikipedia contributors.

The Netherlands and the World

[edit]

The Netherlands and the World programme contributes to the diversity of Wikimedia projects by working on making available knowledge and collections in the Netherlands that are particularly relevant to other parts of the world. In addition, we encourage groups in the Netherlands with a recent or historical migration background to become active within the Wikimedia projects. The sub-project Wiki-Goes-Caribbean aims to expand and improve the information about Surinam and the Caribbean on the Wikimedia projects.

  • Wiki-Goes-Caribbean meetings
Wiki-Goes-Caribbean event in person....

On February 18, 28 people travelled to the National Archives in The Hague to visit the Wiki-Goes-Caribbean New Year meeting. Among the participants were Wikimedians, researchers and people from the network of Wikimedia Netherlands, the Dutch Caribbean Bookclub, the National Archives and various organizations including Stichting Splika, Stichting Stil Verleden, the MUSEON, Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen and Stichting Tribal Wisdom. The progress made within the Wiki-Goes-Caribbean project and the plans for 2020 were discussed in more detail. In addition, valuable ideas were shared about approaching and activating people with a connection to the Caribbean. The meeting ended with a pleasant drink with Antillean snacks.

In cooperation with the Nationaal Archief in The Hague and the Dutch Caribbean Bookclub, Wikimedia Nederland organises a Wiki-Goes-Caribbean writing afternoon once every eight weeks. On Saturday, February 22nd the first Wiki-Goes-Caribbean writing afternoon of this year took place in the Nationaal Archief. The theme of this writing afternoon was 'Second World War'. The effect of the war on the Caribbean and the importance of islands such as Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao during the war is still an underexposed topic on Wikimedia platforms. After a tour of the Nationaal Archief and a visit to the new exhibition 'The war that stayed', ten participants started working with Wikipedia.

....and online

On Saturday, April 25th, the first online Wiki-Goes-Caribbean meeting took place. 19 people participated - not only from the Netherlands, but also from Aruba and Curacao. Peter Scholing, information scientist/Researcher, Biblioteca Nacional Aruba, talked about pictures from the BNA collections that are now also available on Wikimedia Commons and that can be used to illustrate Wikipedia articles. After a short introduction about the ISA tool, a Wikipedia introduction for beginners started. At the same time, a group of more advanced editors discussed (among other things) the development of the Papiamento-language Wikipedia.

On Saturday the 20th of June some 15 participants of the Wiki-Goes-Caribbean project met online again, via Zoom. The theme of this writing afternoon, organized in cooperation with the Nationaal Archief, was 'Flora and fauna'. Part of the group got a general introduction to Wikipedia, guided by experienced Wikipedians. The other participants exchanged tips and information on various topics, including open dates on the Antilles, how to include Dutch and Papiamento names of animal species in a Wikipedia list, how to search for images on Wikimedia Commons, and the international photo competition Wiki Loves Earth.

  • Wikipedia training courses University of Curaçao

The General Faculty of the University of Curaçao started online training and writing afternoons on 19 May to improve the content on Wikipedia (Dutch and Papiamentu). The language of instruction is Papiamentu and Dutch. The meetings will take place under the experienced guidance of Mrs. Yunette Aniceta, trainee THC Wiki-Goes-Caribbean.

  • Content donations

The Biblioteca Nacional di Aruba donated 104 historical photographs of Curaçao to Wikimedia Commons and a few months later added another 77 images, this time illustrations from a 1662 book on natural history of the Caribbean. Under the guidance of curator Peter Scholing, who attended Wikimania 2019 with a WMNL-scholarship, Aruba's national library has become has become one of our most active partners.

The Museum for World Cultures donated more than 500 digitized photographs, taken between the late 19th and 20th Century. They depict people, culture and buildings in regions with which the Netherlands has historical connections. This specific set of photos includes historical images of Bengal, Southern Africa, Siberia and Ghana. The museum also donated more than 600 old photographs (mainly anonymous) of the Dutch Caribbean region and Suriname.

Plans for Q3-4

[edit]
  • October is History Month in the Netherlands. This year, the theme is East-West: historical connections between the Netherlands and other parts of the world. As this closely aligns with our Netherlands and the World programme, we will organise a writing week and encourage our partners to donate relevant content. In particular, we will work with our friends from Wikimedia Indonesia.
  • We are working on a funding application for a series of workshops + hackathon for small heritage institutions in the European and the Caribbean part of the Netherlands with collections on colonial history.

Programme: Community

[edit]

Wikimedia Nederland offers support to the active volunteers in the Wikimedia projects on a practical, logistical or financial level. We also want to contribute to effective online collaboration and good manners. And we want to motivate and inspire people to actively contribute, through training, manuals and tools.

  • New Year’s reception
Recipients of a Wiki-uil award.
WMNL New Year's Reception

On January 11, the New Year’s reception took place in the Textielmuseum in Tilburg. About 50 Wikimedians took part. In addition, once again the WikiUilen were awarded and the results of the Wikipedia Writing Competition 2019 were announced.

  • Community discussion on recommendations Movement Strategy

In February, draft recommendations were published in the Movement Strategy 2030 process. The Wikimedia Foundation called on all Wikimedians to give their opinion on the recommendations and to participate in the discussion about the future direction. Wikimedia Nederland offered all its members (and other interested parties) the opportunity to discuss the recommendations via a consultation page on the WMNL-wiki and during the WikiSaturday of 8 February at the office in Utrecht. We submitted the response on Meta.

Moving online

[edit]

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, WikiSaturdays at the office of Wikimedia Nederland in Utrecht were cancelled as of March 15. In order for the community to be able to continue to meet, we decided to experiment with organising WikiSaturdays online. Where possible, we provided a focus for the online gathering, such as a training session or a community discussion. Also, we made sure it was possible to socially interaction or just 'hang out'.

  • Online WikiSaturday April 11 & training ISA tool

We organized the first WikiSaturday online on April 11th. Through a video connection, a total of 19 people participated. The afternoon started with a presentation about the ISA tool. With this tool you can easily tag images with structured data, to make images easier to find. An example of a set of tagged images from the Wiki-Goes-Caribbean project in the ISA tool can be found here. After the presentation the meeting split up into a question/answer group and a group that worked together informally. During the evaluation at the end of the meeting it appeared that this form of coming together is appreciated as a replacement of the offline WikiSaturdays.

  • Online WikiSaturday June 13 & training OpenRefine

Wikimedian Daniëlle Jansen gave an online workshop about the program OpenRefine, an open source desktop application for cleaning data and converting data to other formats. 12 12 participants participated in the workshop. Uploading, cleaning up, linking data with Wikidata, and enriching data were discussed. During the presentation the participants each worked with their own database and followed the steps Daniëlle discussed. The presentation of this workshop is available on Wikimedia Commons. Later this year we will organize an (online) OpenRefine work session where everyone will get to work and any questions can be asked directly to other participants.

Community support

[edit]
  • Banner advertising the writing context about the 'twillionth' article on Dutch language Wikipedia
    Dutch Wikipedia two million articles

On Sunday 8 March at 21:12 the Dutch-language Wikipedia reached 2 million articles thanks to the contribution of user Daka with his article Estádio Eládio de Barros Carvalho. Daka has been active on Wikipedia since 2004 and has created thousands of articles, mostly about football. Wikimedia Nederland supported the 2Wiljoen writing contest on Wikipedia (pronounced: twilion) that was organised as part of the achievement of this milestone. A total of 15 Wikipedians took part and  wrote 42 articles on a playful, cheerful or festive subject. We also issued a press release, which was picked up by the media.

  • Wikimedian Edo de Roo received a royal honour in recognition of his volunteer work, and presented the Mayor of Woerden with WMNL's manual 'How to edit Wikipedia'.
    Wikipedia volunteer receives royal honour

On Friday, April 24, veteran Wikimedian Edo de Roo was informed by the mayor of his home town Woerden that, by Royal Decree, he had been appointed a Member in the Order of Oranje-Nassau in recognition of his volunteer work, including his work for the Wikimedia projects. Edo de Roo did his first edit on the Dutch-language Wikipedia on 28 March 2005, and since then he has volunteered to share free knowledge on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia Nederland supported his nomination for the award, and managed to generate some media interest. Two national newspapers were triggered by the event to write features about Wikipedia.

  • Small grants and scholarships

We gave small grants to two volunteers for purchasing books needed to improve Wikipedia-articles.

We had awarded scholarships for the International Hackathon in Albania and for the Queering Wikipedia conference in Austria. Both events were cancelled. We informed the recipients that their scholarships would remain valid if the event would be held later this year.

  • Facilitating discussion on personal data

In April, there was a discussion among Wikimedians in the NLWP Village Pump about the ethical and legal boundaries of collecting and publishing data about living persons on various Wikimedia projects. This mainly concerned Wikipedia and Wikidata, and to a lesser extent Wikimedia Commons. At the request of the community, WMNL invited experts in the field of internet and privacy legislation to provide their opinions about this topic, and drafted a briefing document. The results were presented to the community in July and now await further discussion.

  • WMNL and wiki-freelancers

Increasingly, members of the community are professionally active as freelance Wikimedia-experts and consultants. In that role, they are contracted by WMNL's GLAM-partners and, occasionally, by WMNL. WMNL has developed a set of guidelines to increase transparency and avoid conflicts of interest. We shared this with the ED-group.

  • Milestone for portraits on Wikipedia
Advertising WikiPortret

On June 22, a milestone for portraits on Wikipedia was reached when the 5000th portrait photograph was uploaded via the specially designed website www.wikiportret.nl. These photos, mostly portrait photos of notable people with an article on Wikipedia, have all been released by photographers for use on Wikipedia and elsewhere.

Wikiportret was created in 2008 on the initiative of the then chairman of the association, user Ellywa. It is a tool with which photographers can easily make portrait photos available for Wikipedia. Calls to upload images were placed on biographical articles on Wikipedia without a portrait photo, and as a result, new photos came in every day. The 5,000 photos do not only come from amateur photographers, but also from professionals. WMNL supports Wikiportret by hosting the site on its servers, and providing funds for expert help in software development.

Plans for Q3-4

[edit]
  • Reviewing friendly space policy

An incident at a Wikimedia event in the beginning of the year made us aware of the fact that conflicts and disagreements ‘on-wiki’ can spill over into Wikimedia-events and platforms and easily escalate there. If this happens, WMNL has an obligation to take action under our Friendly Space Policy. This poses a dilemma: dealing with the incident without taking into account the on-wiki context can be unfair or even unjust. WMNL, however, has no authority on-wiki and should not be brought into the position that it starts indirectly sanctioning on-wiki behaviour, especially when the online community itself has not (yet) considered it problematic enough to take action. This summer, we will start a discussion with our members and the wider community on how to deal with this issue.

Programme Free Content

[edit]

Wikimedia Nederland encourages and supports cultural institutions with the release and uploading of content to the Wikimedia projects, by organizing training courses in the use of upload tools, hackathons and upload sessions and (financial) support for small GLAMs. Wikimedia Nederland encourages the use of donated material by organizing online writing events and challenges and edit-a-thons for experienced editors.

GLAM programme

[edit]
  • Analysis of Dutch GLAM-Wiki projects in relation to the Dutch Digital Heritage Reference Architecture

In 2019, Wikimedia Nederland was approached by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) with the question if the GLAM-Wiki process - cultural institutions contributing content to Wikimedia projects - could be analyzed in relation to the Dutch DERA (Digitaal Erfgoed Referentie Architectuur / Digital Heritage Reference Architecture) of the Dutch Digital Heritage Network. DERA is a reference architecture in the Dutch heritage sector, and aims to make heritage information in the Dutch Digital Heritage Network more visible for end users, using the principles of Linked Open Data. The DERA wiki (in Dutch) has detailed information about the various components of DERA.

In the past months, a small committee of staff and board members of Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and Wikimedia Nederland has started working on this analysis. The committee describes the relationship between (Dutch) GLAM-Wiki projects and DERA, an analysis based on several practical case studies:

Also see information about this analysis on Wikimedia Nederland's wiki, and the 'backlog item' (task/ticket) about this analysis on DERA's wiki (in Dutch): https://dera.netwerkdigitaalerfgoed.nl/index.php/BI1584535297

  • Partnership with Amsterdam Time Machine

The Amsterdam Time Machine (ATM) is a public research tool about the history of Amsterdam. By systematically linking datasets from different sources, users can retrieve historical information, support public interfaces and ask new questions about, for example, cultural events, everyday life, social relationships or the use of public space in the city of Amsterdam. Wikimedia Nederland supports this initiative and has decided to join the Amsterdam Time Machine consortium. We hope to organize a joint activity with the Time Machine later this year, probably focused on Wikidata.

  • Manual 'Organising a Wikipedia writing event'
Manual: organising a Wikipedia writing meeting
One of the many images being donated by the Utrecht Archives: nurses with one their young patients watching allied forces entering Utrecht at the end of World War II

We published a manual on how to organise a Wikipedia writing event. We are frequently approached by organisations and institutions that ask for our help in planning a Wikipedia writing meeting or edit-a-thon so that they can share knowledge about their own field of expertise with the world. Because we don’t have the capacity to work with all these organisations, we developed a manual on how to organise a Wikipedia Writing event.

Content donations

[edit]

Content donations related to gender gap and Wiki-Goes-Caribbean are mentioned in those sections of the report.

  • Utrecht Archives

Thanks to the help of dozens of Wikimedians, the Utrecht Archives are now able to upload all open-licensed images within their image Bank to Wikimedia Commons. These are more than 150,000 photos, illustrations and maps. "In order to make sure that these can be found easily in the future, we and a lot of volunteers have linked the keywords from our archive to the categories on Wikimedia Commons" says Rick Companje, initiator and employee of the Utrecht Archives. "We have now started the large upload. We are starting with the subcollection Railways because we know that this collection is very popular. By sharing our images on Wikimedia Commons we hope that even more people will enjoy it and be able to use it in research and documenting heritage online". The upload itself will take several months and the progress is available through the Wikimedia Commons Category:Images from the Utrecht Archive.

  • One of the National Library Highlights
Highlights of the Koninklijke Bibiotheek on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata

Inspired by the activities of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and inspired by the presentation that the project leader Andrew Lih gave on Wikidatacon 2019, the National Library of the Netherlands or Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) has now also started a project around their masterpieces. In this project, the KB focuses on improving the access to and (re)usability of the data, images and texts of their masterpieces by placing them on Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons (including structured data) and the English and Dutch Wikipedias. The 72 masterpieces of the KB show a great diversity of works: from medieval manuscripts, picture books, atlases, weapons books to alba amicorum and periodicals.

Libraries

[edit]

As mentioned in our impact report 2019, our application for funding our library-work was unexpectedly turned down. We are now exploring cooperation with OCLC, a global library cooperative that provides shared technology services, original research and community programs for its membership and the library community at large. We will cooperate on two seminars in autumn.

Public libraries closed mid-March and only reopened in June, the wiki-groups they host went into hibernation.

Education programme

[edit]
  • Education programme Wikipedia in Maastricht: education with historical sources

Maastricht University stimulates the integration of research and education by allowing students to participate in research-based learning programmes. Examples are courses within the Wikipedia education programme, such as On Expedition, Historical Book Review and Opening up old books: investigating the botanical archives of Maastricht. By writing a Wikipedia article, students practice writing from a neutral point of view, referencing and quoting (primary) sources. Read more about it in the blog post of Odin L.M.J. Essers, curator of Special Collections at Maastricht University.

  • ITV - college for translators and interpreters

Because of the Corona-crisis, students of our longstanding partner ITV had difficulty finding internships. WMNL offered to host more trainees than usual, as there are still plenty of articles waiting to be translated. In the first months of 2020, we had eight trainees, translating articles from French, Italian, German and English Wikipedia. They translate articles at the request of Dutch Wikipedians, or select featured articles on topics not yet covered on Dutch Wikipedia.

  • University of Amsterdam & LIMA: Students write articles about Media artists

In January we completed a collaboration between Wikimedia, LIMA and 20 students of the study Modern and Contemporary Art at the University of Amsterdam. The students were commissioned to write a Wikipedia article. Most students wrote an article for the English Wikipedia and submitted their article as a draft. Some have now been published, others are still awaiting review or need improvement. LIMA was so inspired by the event that they started work on a grant application for a Wikimedian in Residence.

  • Miscellaneous

WMNL contributed expertise to -or acted as a liaison to the Wikimedia community for- a number of classes given by university lecturers:

Plans for Q3 - Q4

[edit]
  • we are exploring the possibility to organise a capacity building session for senior staff of heritage institutions on the benefits of cooperating with the Wikimedia projects with DEN (Digital Heritage Netherlands)
  • we will work together with NDE (Dutch Digital Heritage Network) in their annual hacking event Hackalod
  • together with OCLC we will develop two seminars for staff from libraries in the Netherlands

Programme Outreach

[edit]

This program aims to increase the reputation of Wikimedia and to promote the vision of the movement and to convince the general public, heritage institutions and policy makers that this vision is worth making a contribution.

Of all the programmes in our annual plan, Outreach was most affected by the COVID19 lockdown measures. We decided to cancel major events, such as the annual national conference WIKICON-NL, for this year. Events by partner organisations, such as conferences and seminars, where we would have expected to present the Wikimedia-projects, were also cancelled.

Public Domain Day Editathon. How much time have you got? 15 minutes to upload an image to Commons, 30 minutes to add an image to a Wikipedia-article, 60 minutes to write a Wikipedia article....

We are considering whether it will be possible to hold an online conference-substitute later in the year. This will provide an opportunity for partner organisations and community members to showcase their activities, and provide a virtual venue for capacity building.

Public Domain Day

[edit]
Inspiration board at Public Domain Day editathon

Public Domain Day 2020 was an event focussing on works that had come into the public domain on January 1, 2020, as their makers had died in 1949. It took place on January 10 at the Netherlands Institute Sound and Vision in Hilversum. The programme focused on creatrors who died in 1949, their works entering the public domain, underlying legislation and new technical developments. Wikimedia Nederland organised a special edit-a-thon for the creators who died in 1949 and who do not yet have a lemma on Wikipedia. The event was an initiative of the working group Public Domain of Vereniging Open Nederland, in which Vereniging Wikimedia Nederland also participates.

Wikimedia Nederland Board

[edit]

Because of COVID19 the General Assembly planned for 18 April was cancelled. This meant no board elections were held for the succession of the three board members who were due to step down according to the roster: Frans Grijzenhout, Marike van Roon and Michel Wesseling. Frans and Marike decided to resign as of 18 April. Michel will remain a member of the board until the next Assembly  this autumn and will then stand for re-election. WMNL is very grateful to Frans and Marike for their contributions over the past years. The role of  chairman of the board will be taken over by Jan Bart de Vreede. Lotte Belice Baltussen has put herself forward as a candidate for the board and will begin attending board meetings as  from 18 April. She will be up for election at the next Assembly.

Staff

[edit]

GLAM coordinator Michelle van Lanschot was on maternity leave from February to July.  Sandra Fauconnier temporarily took over her most of her projects.

Annual report & Auditor's Report

[edit]

The 2019 Annual Report was published and the 2019 financial accounts were approved by the auditor. They will be submitted to the General Assembly in September for final approval by the membership.

Fundraising

[edit]

WMNL received a generous donation of €50.000 to support work on the Sustainable Development Goals over the coming three years. The donor is a private family fund who have supported WMNL in the past.

We have selected a consultancy specialised in fundraising for non-profits to help raise our revenue through private donations. We have a number of loyal donors who donate >€100 per year, and would like to increase that number.
