Telling your program stories - all programs
[edit]Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.
- We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
- Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
- We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
- We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past and to report consistently over time.
- You are welcome to use the table below to report on any metrics or measures relevant to your program. These may or may not include the global metrics you put in the overview section above. You can also share your progress in another way if you do not find a table like this useful.

Quality Content
As a part of the Quality Content Program, Wikimedia Armenia implemented some initiatives and editathons, some of which were accomplished by collaborating with various institutions and other Wikimedia affiliates. After a year break, Wikimedia Armenia participated in the “Wiki Loves Monuments” project recording good results both in terms of participation and the number of uploaded pictures.
Unfortunately, Wikimedia Armenia faced a serious problem when there was an internal issue inside the organization, which did not allow to work appropriately and to carry out all the planned projects in a proper manner. That is why all the efforts were put on the normalization of relationships, regular operation of the organization, raising the awareness within the wikicommunity and attempts to eliminate possible risks that may threaten the regular functioning of Wikimedia Armenia. These endeavors left only a little time and capacity to put on the development of Quality Content. Despite these facts, we were able to start a new initiative (Wikidoctor) meant for enhancing the quality content in Armenian Wikipedia.
As part of the Quality Content Program, a collaboration started with the “Article 3” Club on the topic of Human Rights. Within the framework of “Article 3” Law Festival, an editathon dedicated to human rights took place at the office of Wikimedia Armenia. Thematic articles have been created using reliable sources and authentic information. Several volunteers participated in the editathon, who, with the guidance of consulting specialists, carried out research and published 15 articles on human rights in Armenian Wikipedia.
Within the framework of GLAM, a partnership started with one of the museums in Armenia. This time the collaboration was with “Stepan Shahumyan House-Museum” located in one of the cities of the northern Lori region – Stepanavan. A staff member and a volunteer visited the museum several times and digitized essential documents that are available on Wikisource and pictures which were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. They scanned archived photos, digitized books, and took photos of the house where Stepan Shahumyan lived. This collaboration will be continuous. Wikimedia Armenia also started a partnership with My Armenia Program within the framework with GLAM. The purpose of the collaboration is to gather employees of various regional museums and galleries in Armenia together and introduce them to Wikipedia and other Wiki projects so that they can contribute to these projects by creating articles about their museums and all those artifacts and artworks that are preserved there and by uploading photos. The agreement was reached during this period, and we have started the preparations for the project; however, the project will begin during the next reporting period, and the results will be available then.
The digitization process went actively till the end of July; unfortunately, starting from August till the end of the period, no major digitization work was done; only four-five books were scanned and digitized. The reason is that within the framework of the project, no new books were needed, and the process temporarily halted. Once there is again the demand for new books and resources, the digitization of content will restart.
Thematic councils and Wiki Loves Science
Due to the “Wiki Loves Science” project we had a lot of medical students engaged in the Wikimedia movement and especially in improving and creating medical content in Armenian Wikipedia. To make their work more centralized and coordinated we have created a medical council during the last year. However, the council did not work properly then. During this reporting period, the council started working more actively trying to initiate and coordinate new projects. The council consists of more than 15 people. Now some of the members of the council made a decision to spread the idea of creating medical articles in Wikipedia around their friends and classmates. But the first step should be teaching how to edit Wikipedia and all the tools concerning it. As a result, they started an educational project called “Wikidoctor” (see the details below).
As there were some problems inside Wikimedia Armenia, we have decided to spend our efforts on making the organization healthier by organizing meetups with community members and members of the organization instead of "Wiki Loves Science" events. Even though we did not organize WLS, due to those meetups we tried to raise awareness about the problems inside the organization around our Wikicommunity and members of the organization and think ways of solving them. Also, those meetups (see details in the Community section) were meant to strengthen and expand the Wikimedia movement around the Wikicommunity.
Wikidoctor
The medical council that was created during last year, started operating more actively during this reporting period. As some things changed inside the organization and the community started feeling more valued, some community members began initiating interesting and creative events to export the idea of Wikimedia movement around their friends and acquaintances. As a result, five members of the organization, who are also undergraduate students at Yerevan Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi, have organized, conducted and coordinated a Wikipedia course for students from the above-mentioned university and representatives of the health sector. The purpose of the course is to enrich the Armenian Wikipedia with high quality and reliable medical articles and to involve more representatives from this field in the process. It is not only very significant to have trustworthy information on medical topics but also a lot of people will be involved in creating good quality content concerning medical issues in Wikipedia. It will also enable us to enlarge the medical wikicommunity and the council.
During the course, participants were introduced to the basic tools and principles of Wikipedia and edited articles, mainly by selecting them from the list of “1000 Most Important Medical Articles”. More than 113 people applied for the course, but the committee chose only 30 participants to be part of the project. During the first stage, the participants learned about the basics of Wikipedia. As a part of the second stage, they were assigned two articles which they should finish by the end of February. The project is ongoing and it will last till February 29. The project has not finished yet but we have already some results - eleven participants created 22 articles with good quality content. The other results, advantages and disadvantages of the project will be available after the project is over meaning during the next period.
Wiki Loves Monuments
This year Wikimedia Armenia once again took part in the annual "Wiki Loves Monuments" photo contest after a one year break. Various social media platforms were used to disperse information about the competition.
This year Wikimedia Armenia decided to take the “Wiki Loves Monuments” competition to a new level by organizing expeditions to different parts of Armenia and Artsakh. The expeditions were made up of the members of Wikimedia Armenia and Wikicommunity representatives. The purpose of such an approach was to engage the community in the event. Expedition groups consisting of four or five people went to different parts of the country to take pictures of the monuments they have visited. Later all the pictures were uploaded in the Wikicommons. At the same time, continuing the experience of previous years, Wikiclub members with their coordinators also organized an expedition to their surrounding settlements to take photos of the monuments located there.
Overall, 138 people from Armenia participated in the “Wiki Loves Monuments” photo contest by uploading 21,100 photos. Six contestants uploaded more than 10,000 photos together.
It was decided that this year the awards ceremony should be a separate event and a much bigger one compared to previous years. The awards ceremony took place on the 28th of December. There were around 40 people attending the award ceremony, mainly people who participated in the “Wiki Loves Monuments” photo contest and uploaded photos. There were three national media representatives attending the event who commentated on the ceremony on national television. Participants of the project presented the trip in which they participated and showed several photos of their destination. After the presentation, all the active participants were granted their certificates and presents.
- We have scheduled two activities at the end of December before the holidays. As a result, there were not many participants as it was difficult for people to attend the events because of their preparations for the holidays. Thus, this experience gave us an understanding that events and activities that we carry out in December should be scheduled one or two weeks before the holidays.
- We have decided to create new thematic councils besides the medical one; however, it became clear that, firstly, it is better to make the medical council an actively processing body and see the progress and results. After analyzing the pros and cons of such councils we will start creating other thematic councils.
- Highly operational medical council
- "Wikidoctor" project working on the enrichment of medical quality content in Armenian Wikipedia
Community
This program is one of the most important parts of the annual plan as its purpose is to engage the Wikicommunity in the implementation of various projects and in developing the community’s capacities. Unlike previous years when much more attention was paid to the quantity of articles or development of the quality content, in this reporting period Wikimedia Armenia focused mainly on the community because the engagement of the community is much more important in enlargement of the Wikimedia movement and expansion of its ideology.
To make the community’s involvement possible in various projects, community members gain an opportunity to organize different trainings and lectures by themselves. Due to such training, community members exchange their knowledge and learn together which increases the productivity of the community. Two such training sessions were organized by a community member who is also a WMAM member: one concerning the Armenian history - “Battle of Avarayr” - and the other human rights - “The state legal system and human rights”. These trainings helped the participants pay more attention to certain details regarding these topics while creating or improving articles in Armenian Wikipedia.
Also, a thematic workshop was organized in the office of Wikimedia Armenia which was dedicated to uploading pictures on Wikimedia Commons. As Wikimedia Armenia was participating in the “Wiki Loves Monuments” project this year, we have decided to prepare community members and other people for the project and teach them how to participate in the project and how to upload pictures on Wikimedia Commons. This was meant for improving the capacity of the community.
The community is a vital part of the Wikimedia movement and the members of the organization play an important role in the organization’s affairs, therefore, Wikimedia Armenia organizes community meetups for both members and the community. Previously, such meetups focused mainly on editing work, however, this time Wikimedia Armenia has decided to change the format of the community meetups. From now on the purpose of these meetups will be to introduce the Wikicommunity members about the organization’s activities and its future steps and projects. Within this framework, the community members have a chance to be informed about all the projects and activities that are carried out by the organization, also, they can raise issues and problems concerning the organization and suggest solutions. Thus, they become a real part of the movement and have the chance to start initiatives as they feel valued and supported by the organization. Around 26 people participated in the meetup that took place in October. The meetup's agenda consisted of various topics mainly concerning the organization, the Wikimedia movement, the present projects and the ones that are planned for the future. As the first experience of this new format was successful, we will continue in the same way.
In October, according to an agreement between Tamara Grigoryan, coordinator of the Karvachar Wikiclub and Punjab Wikicommunity representative Manavpret Kaur, an Indian thematic editathon was held. Eight Wikiclubs (around 31 participants) from the Armenian community agreed to participate in the editathon and instead of editing regular articles, club members began choosing and editing articles from a list of articles concerning various topics and areas of India. As a result, 73 articles were created.
At the same time, students of SEABA International School participated in the initiative by editing articles about Armenia. Overall, 15 Indian students participated in the editathon on Armenian topics and they created 31 articles on various topics related to Armenia.
Overall, such editathons are very beneficial for two reasons:
- Wikiclubs gain an opportunity to actively engage in the Wikimedia movement and have their contribution to improving Armenian Wikipedia.
- Due to such collaboration, the content on various countries in Armenian Wikipedia improves dramatically.
This year Wikimedia Armenia hosted and co-organized a Strategy Salon both for Iranian Wikimedians and Farsi Community and Armenian Community. Strategy Salons are an opportunity for recognized Wikimedia affiliates to host in-person gatherings to discuss movement strategy. The platform that was intended for the Armenian Community brought together active community members who had the chance to discuss the structural reform of the Wikimedia movement.
Training for Trainers
Wikimedia Armenia started a new course called “Training for Trainers” which aims at preparing a group of people who know, understand and process Wikipedia and sister projects by having a thorough and deep knowledge about them. Anyone can use Wikipedia and other projects but not everyone is an expert on every tool that exists in these projects. Therefore, by “Training for Trainers” course Wikimedia Armenia is intended to expand the number of experts in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. This is a very important project because we need knowledgeable Wikipedians for our collaboration with universities, for other trainings, and especially the Wikicamps where we always have experts for teaching children the tools of different Wikimedia projects. Also taking into consideration the interest and desire of different educational, cultural and other institutions to develop Wikipedia in different formats and to include it in their curriculum, this project seems very relevant.
Due to the demand, Wikimedia Armenia carried out the first “Training for Trainers” course in December. It was a three-day training that took place in Tsaghkadzor. Around ninety people applied for the course but only 50 of them had the chance to participate in the course. There was no age limit for the participants so there were both adults and teens. The course had a unique format; the participants had to present their knowledge about Wikipedia and other projects and due to the discussion fill the gaps of their knowledge. The agenda comprised of several questions:
- The ideology of the Wikimedia movement
- Wikipedia and its tools
- Wikisource and its tools
- Participation in community life
- Copyright in Wikimedia projects
- Wikidata and its tools
- Wikicommons and its tools
The course does not only contribute to other projects by preparing experts on Wikimedia projects but also improves the capacity of the community. A lot of community members develop their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the Wikimedia projects. The first course had good feedback, therefore it will be continuous. By the way, due to this project now we have a lot of people who understand Wikipedia better and know how to teach it to others. Now we can easily organize several events and courses without worrying that we will be short of experienced editors. The details about the impact that "Training for Trainers" had will be available during the following reporting period.
Community Members’ Participation in Various International Events
“Youth4Remembrance” and Wikimedia projects
From October 31 to November 6, the “Youth4Remembrance – Sharing tools how to encourage millennials to critically reflect on European history” event was held in Kagel, Germany. There were two participants from Wikimedia Armenia in the seminar; Khazhak Drampyan and Norayr Baghdasaryan. The seminar was mainly about remembrance in terms of history and our two participants presented Wikimedia projects as a tool for this process. Khazhak Drampyan introduced the participants with how Wikipedia works and what opportunities it provides to editors. There was a separate reference to GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) projects as tools for cultural remembrance. Overall, this seminar gave an opportunity to two community members to associate history and remembrance with Wikimedia projects and later share their experiences with other community members. International collaborations help to expand the Wikimedia movement by presenting Wikimedia projects and events which bring together various communities.
Wikimania 2019
This year Wikimania 2019 annual conference took place in Stockholm, Sweden. Wikimedia Armenia was actively involved in various programs at the conference. Several Wikicommunity members participated in the conference: Wikiclub coordinators Tamara Grigoryan, Armenuhi Voskanyan, and Irina Safaryan and an active editor Armine Aghayan. The first two people with the president of Wikimedia Armenia Susanna Mkrtchyan presented their speech entitled “Wikiclassroom: New way for students' inspiration” sharing their experience of organizing a Wikiclassroom and pinpointing the advantages of such initiative.
Armine Aghayan presented his collaboration with museums in Armenia to the GLAM coordinators, also, as a co-founder, she introduced the InterWiki Women international project. Finally, Irina Safaryan presented the work and activities carried out in the Wikiclubs on different platforms. She also talked about the importance of Wikisource in education by presenting her speech - "Wiktionary & Wikisource in EduWiki Initiatives: Challenges and Opportunities".
The participants attended various events and gained a lot of knowledge and exchanged their experiences. The conference gave them an opportunity to learn new things which can be used in productively organizing activities and projects. Overall, the Wikicommunity’s participation in Wikimania annual conference is vital as it enables them to improve their skills, learn new things and share them with other community members.
CEE Meeting 2019
Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2019 - Broaden Your Capacity!” annual conference began on October 11 in Belgrade, Serbia which was hosted by Wikimedia Serbia (Викимедија Србије) this year. Three Wikiclub coordinators - Tamara Grigoryan, Arpine Andreasyan, and Irina Safaryan - participated in the event. Two editors of Western Armenian Wikipedia - Haykanush Minasyan and Aram Trtrian - also took part in the conference. At the conference, Tamara Grigoryan and Arpine Andreasyan made a speech entitled "Wikiclubs as a Non-Formal Educational Platform for Armenian Students" sharing their own experiences with the attendees.
The participants had the chance to attend distinct workshops, sessions, and discussions which help them to come across new ideas and improve older ones. Overall, the attendance at the conference was a great experience for the participants. They also met a lot of new people and discussed possible cooperation with other communities. For instance, Tamara Grigoryan discussed the possibility of starting an Indian-Armenian editathon with an Indian community member (see details in the Quality Content part). Participation in such conferences brings different community members closer to each other, making further cooperation even more feasible.
Wikipedia for Peace: We can [edit]!
Wikipedia for Peace: We can [edit]! camp was a Wikipedia Peace event organized from 2nd to 10th August 2019, in Kötschach-Mauthen, a small mountain village in the Austrian Alps. The camp was organized by Wikimedia Austria, the Austrian chapter of the worldwide non-profit foundation behind Wikipedia.
The main goal of the event was to teach how to write Wikipedia articles and get to know the inspiring biographies of amazing activists fighting for peace, environmental justice, LGBT+ rights, civil rights, and other burning issues to make our planet a better place. There were 20 participants from Armenia, Austria, Germany, and Spain, the main language was English.
Wikimedia Armenia, as one of the partner organizations, sent four participants and Wikimedia Armenia staff member Davit Saroyan as a group leader to the camp. The participants were active Wikipedians, selected by the selection committee after a call of applications on the basis of motivation and Wikipedia contribution. Armenian participants among others edited Wikipedia articles on different topics and people related to the goal of the project.
Later talking about their experience in the camp, the four participants expressed their opinions by stating that such programs help them improve their skills, meet new people and make friends, share and exchange their knowledge. They added that they will share their experience with the Armenian Wikicommunity and will try to co-organize such events and activities for the community.
- In the application of the “Training for Trainers” event, there was no age limit specified, so a lot of underage people participated in the project. However, it became clear that underage participants are not yet ready to become trainers as they do not know a lot of things about Wikipedia or editing and they do not have experience in teaching others. Therefore, the following “Training for Trainers” will exclusively be for people above the age of 18.
- An army of experienced Wikieditors due to "Training for Trainers" course
- Collaboration between Indian and Armenian Wikicommunities which hopefully will be continuous
- New format of Community meetups which raises awareness inside the Wikicommunity
- More community members' participation in international events and in organizing local events
Education
Education program is one of the major programmatic direction of WMAM. The framework of the program expanded including two seminars for teachers, two Summer Wikicamps and one Fall Wikicamp, collaboration with universities, and four new Wikiclubs. The purpose of all these programs is to engage Wikipedia and Wikiprojects with education, to involve not only teachers but also university students and school students in Wikimedia movement.
According to a memorandum signed by the President of Wikimedia Armenia and the governor of Tavush region in March, the number of Wikiclubs already opened in Tavush has been increased by four becoming eleven overall. To engage schoolchildren and teachers from different communities of Tavush region in the Wikimedia movement and to publicize free knowledge and make it more accessible for everyone, new Wikiclubs were founded in town Berd, Verin Karmiraghbyur, Aygedzor and Gandzakar villages. The opening ceremony was attended by the President of Wikimedia Armenia and the Head of Education Department of Tavush Regional Administration. It is planned to continue the process of opening Wikiclubs in Tavush region. This is the first experience of engaging a whole region in the Wikimedia movement and the final goal is to have Wikiclubs in each and every community in that region. This is also a new format of Wikiclubs as the financing is provided by schools.
Wikimedia Armenia tried to restart the collaboration with the Armenian Educational Foundation (AEF). According to the arrangement, each student should create ten articles. The scholarship holders of the Armenian Educational Foundation participated in a workshop held in the office of Wikimedia Armenia in December. During the workshop participants were introduced to Wikipedia and its tools and the Wikimedia ideology. As the collaboration restarted in December and it coincided with exam weeks and winter holidays, the participants did not attend the workshops regularly. Despite that, we are determined to restart the process in January and deepen the cooperation between WMAM and AEF.
WikiCamps
Summer WikiCamp I/II and Fall WikiCamp
Wikicamps are the most important part of the Education program as they engage the most number of participants and volunteers in the Wikimedia movement. This year’s Summer Wikicamps were marked by a great number of applicants and participants. Wikimedia Armenia has received around 340 applications for three camps. Two of the camps were for students aged 9-14 and the other one was for students aged 15-18. The camps were also marked by a great number of payable participants - overall 34 who were equally distributed among groups.
The learning and editing process in Wikimedia projects were organized with the help of experienced wikieditors (Wikiteam). The participants were editing in 3 Wikimedia projects - Armenian Wiktionary, Wikisource, and Wikipedia. The Wikiteam was also responsible for the quality checking of the content written during the camp. The organization team used a new method for the newbies’ teaching process. The experienced editor students of each group who expressed willingness to share their knowledge with their groupmates taught the editing tools and rules to their fellow friends. The usage of this method made the teaching and learning process more smoothly and effectively as it is always more comprehensive when the students of the same age explain the editing tools to each other.
One of the achievements of this camp was Armenian Wiktionary moving 2 lines up in the list of all Wiktionaries - now we are in the 21st place.
Especially the Summer Wikicamps were remarkable for collaborations with various state institutions and other organizations. The camp hosted Hovhannes Toumanian Museum Education program team who represented Armenian writer Hovhannes Toumanian’s life and literary works. After the presentation, the guests organized a small quiz during which the campers answered Toumanian related questions. As many of us know Toumanian has also created a number of games for children. The campers were happy to play those games with the help of Toumanian museum staff. The other memorable event of the camp was the educational-informative event by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Armenia. The Ministry staff organized training-games that were aimed at increasing the level of awareness during emergencies. The small actors of the “911” children’s theater of the Cultural Center of the State Academy of Crisis Management presented the "Disaster" musical-educational performance to the campers. After the presentation, the campers watched educational cartoons prepared by the Ministry of Emergency Situations and “Save the Children” organization about earthquake, flood, and fire, after which a quiz game was organized. The winners were awarded certificates.
An evacuation training was also organized for the campers. Firefighters and rescuers arrived after the alarm was reported and began to work immediately on the area of the rest house evacuating those campers who had not managed to leave the building. The training was conducted under the supervision of major Samvel Davtyan, Commander of the Hrazdan N 44 department of the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations. At the end of the day, the children were also taught how to provide first aid in different situations.
The second Summer Wikicamp hosted the representatives of the Financial System Mediator's office who talked about financial literacy and discussed various topics related to the field. One of the other memorable events of the camp was the visit of servicemen of Special Forces N of the RA Ministry of Defense, during which the youth practically learned certain techniques of self-defense and fighting.
This Wikicamp was very important in terms of having participants from Armenia, Artsakh, Georgia, and Italy, thereby making the camp a bit international. These international participants brought diversity in the camp and gave an opportunity to Armenian campers to get to know their peers from other countries and their experience in editing Wikipedia. This was a great experience for both sides as for example a participant from Italy never thought that children of that age can gather in one place, spend a week together and contribute to Wikiprojects with so much passion. You can find the impression of these participants about the Wikicamp in the Newsletter article.
The Fall Wikicamp was also memorable in terms of collaborations. Wikimedia Armenia invited Bulgarian director Andrey Hajivasilev to the Wikicamp. In his turn, Andrey Hajivasilev invited the Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Armenia Maria Pavlov to the camp. Each group of campers greeted the visitors in a different way - by a welcoming speech, performing a Bulgarian song, reading a Bulgarian poem and presenting a poster devoted to Armenian-Bulgarian friendly relations. Later that day, there was a movie screening where the campers watched Andrey Hajivasilev’s movie “The Curie Case” and had a discussion with the director.
As a continuation of our cooperation with the Ministry of Defense and getting good feedback from campers about their experience, we have organized another meeting with soldiers of the Special Forces who showed and taught the children some techniques of self-defense.During the editing process of the three Wikicamps various wiki games were used not only to deepen the knowledge of participants but also to introduce them the common mistakes made by them. Looking from this perspective, the camps are really crucial because they give an opportunity to all the participants to strengthen their abilities and knowledge about Wiki projects and learn new things. The following are some of those wiki games that helped the participants to enrich their understanding of Wikipedia and other projects:- Free and copyrighted images on Wikipedia, related policies and fair use
- Citing Wikipedia articles
- Punctuations and rules of placement
- Transforming text into encyclopedic style
- Wikipedia article structure
- Add links on the Wikipedia page
- Correction of common mistakes in Armenian
Non-wiki activities had its own unique place on WikiCamp agenda including a variety of interesting and entertaining events and games. Throughout the days of the camp, the children played intellectual, cultural and sports games, prepared interesting and entertaining small theatrical performances, sang songs - especially during the second Summer Wikicamp when within the framework of cultural exchange the participants learned Armenian, Italian, and Georgian songs.
- To reduce editing hours of each workshop from 1.5 to 1 as the campers aged 9-15 are not able to concentrate and edit effectively during such a long period of time.
- To spend half an hour during the first workshop discussing with the campers the mistakes done during the previous day (This was done previously during the camps but not in a coordinated manner).
- To add the number of Wikiteam members if possible.
- To include such activities in the agenda where the Wikiteam can interact with the campers outside the workshop.
Seminars for Teachers
According to a memorandum signed by the President of Wikimedia Armenia and the governor of Tavush region in March 2019, there will be Wikiclubs almost in all communities of the region and Wikipedia will gradually become a part of the learning process at schools. However, not all teachers know how to edit in Wikipedia so they cannot teach their students. Thus, Wikimedia Armenia initiated a new two-day seminars for teachers of Tavush region. These seminars enable teachers to learn editing in Wikipedia and in other Wiki projects and after the opening of a Wikiclub in their school, teach their students as well.
Two such seminars - one in August and the other in December - for teachers from the Tavush region were organized. One of the seminars was held at Wikimedia Armenia office in Yerevan with 18 teachers from different communities of the region. Six of them had wiki editing experience, and the rest were beginner editors. The other seminar took place in Ijevan in the Tavush region. There were 11 participants in this two-day training.
There were both experienced teachers and newcomers attending the training. The work with newcomers was separated from the experienced ones. The coordinator introduced the main principles of Wikipedia and its editing process. Beginner participants created accounts on Wikipedia. With the help of experienced contributors, they began editing, getting acquainted with the basics of editing, the ideology of Wikipedia, and making the first edits. They learned how to translate the article from another language Wikipedia and how to find sources and articles on their own.
As most of the teachers were experienced ones, coordinators tried to strengthen their wiki knowledge, introduced the most common mistakes in the articles, learned new editing tools and skills, identified shortcomings in their articles and tried to find ways to eliminate them, discussed various problems and summarized the training with Q&A session.
The results of these two seminars are that the teachers deepened their knowledge and now they are actively editing in Wikipedia; some of them actively participate in the "An article per week" campaign which was revived due to these teachers. They became so active that six of them even were awarded with certificates for participating in the campaign for more than 40 weeks.
Collaboration with Eurasia International University
On September 15, in cooperation with Wikimedia Armenia and Eurasia International University, a course on Wikipedia for students from Eurasia University’s Management Department was launched. According to the arrangement, the course is an obligatory part of the curriculum for the fourth-year students and is an internship for the second and third-year students.
Within the framework of the course held at the office of Wikimedia Armenia, the students were introduced to the basic tools of Wikipedia and to uploading pictures on Wikimedia Commons. Besides becoming familiar with the principles of Wikipedia, fourth-year students were assigned to edit two articles, one by their own choice and the other by the decision of the Chair of the department. The department assigned the students to add a management strategy part in the articles of famous brands like Apple, Samsung, etc. The students drafted their parts and after presenting them to the Chair added to the article. The articles were reviewed and evaluated by the lecturers of the department. In total, five fourth-graders participated in the training. As a result, seven articles were improved and one new article was created.
Although the course was intended to be an internship opportunity for the second and third-year students, the students did not attend the course regularly. At the very beginning, there were around 16 second and third-year students, however, by the end of the course only three or four students continued attending the course, others promised to edit their articles from home. Anyway, the course will be improved and the cooperation will be continuous. During the future course, we will make sure that everyone attends the workshops because we have understood that editing from home is not productive and it is important to regularly attend the workshops.
Wikiclassroom
WikiClubs
In the reporting period, the number of all Wikiclubs in Armenia became 26 as Wikimedia Armenia opened 11 new Wikiclubs in Tavush region and reopened a Wikiclub in Gyumri. In total, the number of Wikiclubs in Armenia is currently 26. In contrast to previous Wikiclubs, newly opened ones are financed by local schools. The clubs are located at schools and the coordinators of the clubs are school teachers. By the way, 11 new Wikiclubs in Tavush region were opened within the framework of the memorandum signed between Wikimedia Armenia’s President and the governor of Tavush region.
Previously the statistics of each Wikiclub were provided by Wikiclub coordinators. However, as the number of the Wikiclubs is gradually growing, it is becoming difficult to gather all the statistics separately and then create a comprehensive report of the statistics. Therefore, Wikimedia Armenia’s new staff member Ashot Janibekyan (a programmer) created a program that automatically creates the statistics for all Wikiclubs every month. It shows the edits, the number of articles created, proofread pages, bytes added and subtracted in Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Wiktionary. This program allows evaluating the performance of clubs and their coordinators without any human factor which eliminates possible subjectivism.
The Wikiclubs operate very effectively as club members contribute not only to Wikipedia but also to Wikisource, Wikicommons and Wiktionary. Besides editing processes Wikiclubs are a place were school students (and not only) get educated. Clubs organize various events and projects and even try to jointly create articles by video calls. Each club also collaborates with other organizations and NGO's, for instance, Alaverdi Wikiclub hosted “Public information and monitoring center” NGO President Marie Chakryan and during the meeting, the club members learned about the human eco rights, Goris Wikiclub members participated in the "Best French Speaker 2019" camp organized by Centre Culturel Francophone de Goris where the coordinator of the Wikiclub introduced campers to Wikimedia projects and volunteer work, organized a workshop, where the WikiClub participants helped the coordinator to teach basic editing tools. After the event, some campers joined the club. Such collaborations are a good way of enlarging the community and spreading the wiki-ideology. Overall, Wikiclubs are the best tool for carrying out these tasks.
- 11 new Wikiclubs opened and one reopened
- A new collaboration with Eurasia International University
- More knowledgeable and experienced teachers that are ready to start Wikiclubs
- Increasing interest in Wikicamps
Western Armenian
After Western Armenian Wikipedia became separate from Armenian Wikipedia, there was the problem of creating a lot of new content and various pages. Also, it became an opportunity for integrating more people in the program through different projects and initiatives.
Within the framework of the Western Armenian program, several local and abroad trainings were organized. A one-week training took place in Armenia in July and two other trainings were organized in Athens and Beirut. Also, during the reporting period, three Western Armenian edit-a-thons took place in July, September and at the end of November. Around 20 people participated in the edit-a-thons and overall 53 articles were created and 19 articles were improved.
According to the Western Armenian project plan approved for the calendar year 2019, the program team was to prepare and disseminate two Public Social Advertisements (PSAs). The first PSA was to be a shorter one (around 30 seconds), an animation to promote the new URL around the Western Armenian Diaspora. The second PSA was to be a live-action advertisement to encourage new audiences to become editors on one hand, as well as to entice already existing Wikipedians into creating more and higher quality articles.
Implementing the project “New Community, New Talents”: Training in Athens
In 2018 Wikimedia Armenia announced a call for proposals for the project “New Communities, New Talents”, however, due to time limitations no community applied and the project was postponed to the following year. In the early 2019 Armenian community in Athens expressed interest in the implementation of the project and in creating the local Armenian community of Wikimedians. Therefore, a week-long training was organized in Athens to present Western Armenian Wikipedia to various groups of the local Armenian community, as well as provide them the knowledge and skills to edit Wikipedia articles and contribute to the Western Armenian Wikisource.
The main group that we worked with during the workshop consisted of 12 participants of different ages and with different professions. Training sessions were also conducted for the 7th and 8th-grade students of Levon and Sofi Hakobyan Armenian School in Athens (approximately 25 students), and for the 6th-grade and the graduate students (approximately 10 students) the Armenian Zavarian School in Athens who are already active in editing and contributing to Wikisource.
It is worth mentioning that during the training week in Athens, project coordinator Azniv Stepanian had an interview on the development and goals of Western Armenian Wikipedia with the local Armenian newspaper “Azad Or”.
Western Armenian editors’ gathering in Armenia
A week-long advanced training event was organized in Tsaghkadzor on July 20-27, 2019 togather the most active and experienced editors from Diaspora communities and to further improve their skills in Wikipedia editing, to help them put theories into practice, as well as to improve the quality of already existing articles.
Eleven experienced editors from Aleppo, Athens, Beirut and Istanbul - school principals, teachers, and students - participated in the training.
Throughout the week, the participants were introduced to various new ways to edit articles in Western Armenian Wikipedia - those editors who were using visual editor learned to edit via wikicode and those editing via wikicode got acquainted with the visual editor. During the event, the participants practiced creating and changing interwiki links, inserting notes, inserting sources, creating new articles based on other sources, creating a list of literature and external links.
They also learned how to rename, redirect and nominate articles for deletion, upload files and use them in the articles, username policies and how to change the username, as well as gained knowledge and skills in working at the Wikimedia Commons.
Throughout the week 34 new articles were created, 109 pages were improved, 376 edits were accomplished, and around 155 pages were proofread and validated in Armenian Wikisource. The following sections were translated from English into Western Armenian in Translatewiki: Notifications, watchlist and change filters, preferences, visual editor, etc.
Wikimania 2019, CEE meeting 2019
On 16-18 August 2019, the Western Armenian project team (Coordinator Azniv Stepanian and assistant Betty Panossian) took part in Wikimania 2019 in Stockholm, Sweden. The annual gathering brought together about 1,000 of Wikipedians from around the globe and offered a unique platform for learning, experience sharing, training, discussion and brainstorming on future development and projects within Wikimedia.
Throughout the three days of the conference, both Azniv Stepanian and Betty Panossian took part in the welcome session and keynote address titled “Share your story about the SDGs”. They also together attended the sessions dedicated to “Growth”, specifically the ones titled: “Challenges and approaches to community growth”, “What we know about newcomers and how to nurture them”, “Campaigning for growth: Women in Red; WikiChallenge Ecoles d'Afrique; and Caucasian collaboration”, “Onboarding and Retention: Hungarian and French Wikipedias”, Lightning Talks: growth ideas to take home”, “Encouraging the spirit of new editors - A structured approach to mapping onboarding efforts”. From the sessions titled “Quality” they attended “Reforming the featured article process in the Indonesian Wikipedia”, “Quality issues in the Northern Saami language”, Lightning Talks dedicated to quality issues, as well as took part in a workshop on documentation and quality process. They also together attended from the sessions titled “Education” the keynote address titled “EDUWiki and Researchers: engaging researchers to contribute to Wikipedia”, and the panel discussion titled “Enhancing students’ learning through EDUWiki initiatives”. Then Azniv Stepanian attended the session titled “Linking OpenStreetMap and Wikidata”, while Betty Panossian attended the session titled “Advancing minority languages through Wikimedia projects in educational settings”.
Overall, Wikimania 2019 resulted in broadening the scope of thought and ideation of the project team, who have garnered several ideas that could be implemented in the future within the project Western Armenian Wikipedia.
On 10-13 October 2019, the Western Armenian editors (Haigan Minasian from Athens and Aram Terterian from Beirut) took part in the Wikimedia annual CEE meeting of 2019, which took place in the capital city of Serbia, Belgrad.
The program for this meeting was very useful for conference participants. Through the different types of sessions, workshops that took place during the conference and especially in fruitful discussions many interesting and practical ideas, tools crossed the participant’s minds.
The attendance at the conference is a great experience for participants, all kinds of people from different cultures and different countries attended these meetings. They learned a lot of new ways to help out their wiki communities, had discussions on further cooperation with other communities, introduced the Western Armenian Wikipedia and the wiki community to other communities and returned with new skills that would be helpful in the future.
Three Western Armenian Wikipedia Edit-a-thons
On July 25-27, Western Armenian Wikipedia edit-a-thon was organized. The edit-a-thon focused on creating new articles on tennis and touristic sites throughout Armenia, as well as on improving a series of already existing articles. Overall, 27 articles were created and 7 articles were improved.
On September 20-22, the second Western Armenian Wikipedia edit-a-thon was organized. This editathon focused on creating new articles on music and the political life in Armenia, as well as on improving a series of already existing articles. Overall, 22 articles were created and 3 articles were improved.
On November 29-December 1, the third Western Armenian Wikipedia edit-a-thon was organized. There was no specific topic planned for the edit-a-thon and the participants had the chance to edit articles according to their preference. Overall, 14 articles were created.
Training in Beirut
The Beirut gathering, which was scheduled from 16-22 October, started as planned.
On October 17, 5 experienced editors got acquainted with Visual Editor, and each one of them created an article by using the tool.
Unfortunately, due to the mass demonstrations in Lebanon shortly after our initial gathering on October 17, our planned work in Beirut became impossible to continue.
As a result of the protests, almost all major roads and streets of the city were closed and the participants could not attend the workshop.
Organizational development
Besides three major programmatic directions, Wikimedia Armenia should pay attention to the organizational development which is carried out in three main directions: capacity enhancement, outreach, and financial sustainability.
Because of Wikicamps and Wikiclubs, Wikimedia Armenia is seen as an organization mainly working with children. However, during this reporting period Wikimedia Armenia tried to change this perception by starting a collaboration with universities (especially Yerevan Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi), paying more attention to university students and specialists. Unfortunately, because of internal problems in the organization, the first two directions (capacity enhancement and outreach) were not covered much.
After the contract with AGBU came to an end, the Executive Director had to find new financial sources and sponsors for the five Wikiclubs formerly financed by the AGBU. However, the ED was not able to fulfill the task of finding sponsors and those Wikiclubs were left without financial support. Thus, one of the main problems for Wikimedia Armenia during the next period should be finding sponsors and new financial sources for the organization and Wikiclubs that should be opened in the future.
One way of improving the financial sustainability of the organization is through donations. Wikimedia Armenia had a donation platform but because of the underrepresentation of the website, Wikimedia Armenia did not have many donations. As financial sustainability is one of the most important strategic directions, we are going to put a lot of effort to improve donate.wikimedia.am platform and make it more productive.
Governance Audit
In 2019, the Wikimedia Foundation submitted a request to Wikimedia Armenia to conduct a governance audit as there were certain organizational, interpersonal negative phenomena that led to the formation of an unhealthy atmosphere, disputes, and Wiki community disruption.
The former Board of the organization which was supposed to organize the governance audit had only collected data about some companies that conducted governance audits.
Immediately after the formation of the newly elected Board, it organized a number of individual and group meetings with the executives of the governance audit companies that applied to us.
At the July 15, 2019, session of the Board of Wikimedia Armenia, it was decided to chose the Justice and Protection company and instruct it to conduct a governance audit in the organization. The applications of the remaining applicants were rejected as each had some kind of conflict of interest with employees of the organization.
The application of Justice and Protection company was agreed with the Wikimedia Foundation. In particular, online meetings were held between Wikimedia Armenia Board members and Wikimedia Foundation representatives, the Director of Justice and Protection company and representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, including the Director of the Law Department of the Foundation.
Governance audit began in the fall of 2019 and ended in November of that year. Much work has been done, almost all of Wikimedia Armenia 's correspondence has been studied, individual confidential meetings have been held with the organization's former and current governing bodies, all staff, organization members and Wiki community representatives.
Based on the governance audit studies and analyses, a comprehensive report was presented to the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Armenia that clearly identifies problems and shortcomings, the causes and possible solutions to the conflict. In particular, it was noted that the organization's charter does not meet the current challenges and needs to be updated. Employee contracts do not contribute to the normal functioning of the organization and need to be reviewed. The conclusion noted that there are conflicts of interest in a number of areas, such as being a staff member and a member of the organization at the same time or being a Board member and the President of the organization. A number of shortcomings in governance and organization of work have been identified however, according to the governance audit report, the current governing bodies have practically resolved by the end of the audit.
The Board of Wikimedia Armenia, the President of the organization, took note of the audit results and developed a policy aimed at eliminating existing problems. In particular, the form of the contract with paid service providers has been revised to comply with the audit conclusion requirements. New forms of employment contracts have already been signed with the newly hired staff, which have also complied with the existing challenges and the audit report's findings.
President-employee relationships have been revised. A clear division of labor was made. Mechanisms for issuing complaints have been developed and introduced, all of which have been put into practice before the conclusion of the governance audit.
By the end of the year, the tense atmosphere between staff and the governing bodies has finally been overcome. It should be noted that four of the staff members of the conflict party were dismissed on the basis of their application. It should be noted that the necessary conditions were provided for these employees to work in a proper atmosphere, however, they chose to leave their jobs.
Much work has been done to establish good relations and atmosphere among the members of the organization, the wiki community. For this purpose, individual and group meetings took place, resulting in the return of many active members of the organization and Wiki community members.
The organization has adopted a policy of transparency. Particularly freely and actively communicates with its members, community representatives, and publishes information about its activities.
Strict control over the organization's finances and assets has been established. Each expense is scrutinized.

Resources
[edit]Resources to plan for measurement
[edit]- Global metrics are an important starting point for grantees when it comes to measuring programmatic impact (Learning Patterns and Tutorial) but don’t stop there.
- Logic Models provide a framework for mapping your pathway to impact through the cause and effect chain from inputs to outputs to outcomes. Develop a logic model to map out your theory of change and determine the metrics and measures for your programs.
- Importantly, both qualitative and quantitative measures are important so consider both as you determine measures for your evaluation and be sure to ask the right questions to be sure to capture your program stories.
