From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their progress after completing the first 6 months of their grants. The time period covered in this form will be the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing grant metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Metrics and results overview - all programs

[edit]

For the entire Wikimedia movement and all its affilliates the year 2019 is a transition year. Movementwide, there are discussions about our strategy towards 2030 and Wikimedia Nederland too is asking itself how it can best contribute to the mission over the coming years. What can we do from the Netherlands to maximise our input to 'knowledge equity and knowledge as a service'? We appreciate the fact that this year's grant gives us space to experiment and explore.

The first six months had several highlights:

  • a grant from the PICA foundation allowed us to explore possibilities of extending our work with libraries. The outcomes were positive: libraries in the Netherlands (academic, public or specialised) are keen to develop wiki-activities. We are now preparing a second grant application to the PICA Foundation for a 2-year programme of work. We also see this as a step towards greater financial indenpence.
  • our Wiki Goes Caribbean programme is flourishing, with monthly editor meetings at the National Archives in Den Haag and - particularly - a two week mission to the Dutch Caribbean islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao in May. Three Dutch Wikimedians trained GLAM and university staff in editing Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.
  • we organised our annual conference in a revised format: one day focussing on staff of (potential) partners and one day focussing on the community. More than 200 people attended
  • on Wikipedia's 18th birthday in January we organised a WikiSalon for GLAM and education partners, open knowledge allies and community members to discuss the future orientation for Wikimedia Nederland.

And in addition we supported the community, organised trainings and writing events, continued our cooperation with GLAMs and universities and strengthened our involvement in lobbying. New Board members were elected, and there were some staff changes.

Community

[edit]
  • Support for new editors: we will continue organising editor trainings, and update editor manuals and cheat sheets for new editors. We will also continue our train-trainers programme and provide new editors with opportunities to meet each other in safe online or offline environments .
  • Community support will focus on providing assistance in improving working climate and capacity building for moderators and arbcom members. In addition we will maintain our scholarships and small grants programme.
  • Gendergap: supporting the gender gap group and building on the work done in 2018 on women and tech.

Community support: editor survey

[edit]

In December 2018, we commissioned a survey for logged-in editors of the Dutch Wikipedia to gauge the opinions of the editors' community and to gain insight into the composition of the community. The survey was completed by 303 editors. In our 2018 Impact Report we already reported in detail on the survey results. On 9 February, the results were discussed wiht the community at the office of Wikimedia Nederland to decide on possible further action. The conclusion was that supporting moderators and arbcommembers, providing resources for community health, and developing more activities specially targetting young Wikimedians would be priorities for WMNL. Several chapters are planning to hold similar surveys and were giving access to the questionnaire used by WMNL.

Community support: In real life meetings

New years reception and WikiUilen

On Saturday 12 January, the New Year's reception of Wikimedia Nederland took place in the Royal Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem. Under the watchful eye of around sixty Wikipedians, the youngest of whom was only twelve years old, the WikiUilen were awarded to the most appreciated contributions to the Dutch Wikipedia in 2018. After the award ceremony, there was the opportunity to visit the zoo. The Dutch national newspaper Volkskrant paid attention to the WikiUilen ceremony in its edition of Monday, January 14.

Birthday party Wikiwoordenboek

On 1 May 2019, it was 15 years ago that the WikiDictionary was launched. Wikimedia Nederland has supported the organisation of an appropriate birthday party. WikiDictionary contributors from the Netherlands and Belgium decided to meet each other informally in Breda, probably the first WikiWoordenboek wikimeet ever. The discussions provided inspiration for a working meeting on the lexicographical possibilities of WikiData.

Organising events for participants with special needs

The survey showed that the Wikipediacommunity has a higher than average percentage of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. (NLWP community 13% - Dutch population 1-2%) This is now also increasingly recognised in the wider Wikimedia movement. As a chapter, we feel that we have have a responsibility to ensure that all Wikimedians can participate in events we organise. For this reason, we have written a learning pattern with suggestions for event organisers. With a number of relatively simple adjustments, events can be made more comfortable for participants who are sensitive to sensory overload.

Event organising and ASD
Wikimedians who are susceptible to sensory overload do not want to be pampered or treated differently. They want to participate. With some relatively simple modifications events can be made more comfortable for them:
  • Don’t make things unnecessarily complicated and avoid too many things happening at the same time. This relates to event programmes, but also to the layout of information materials and website, background music and decorations, the design of social events...
  • Avoid confusion and uncertainty: provide clear and correct information about what will be happening when and where. Cluttered, not user-friendly event communication is often more of a trigger for sensory overload than the fact that many things are happening.
  • Provide simple means to escape the noise and the crowd, during the event itself and during social gatherings.
  • Ensure that (one or more) event organisers can recognise when people are beginning to suffer from sensory overload, and know how to provide adequate support. If there's no one in the organiser team able to provide such a support, there may be groups available offering such kind of work.

Gendergap

[edit]
WikiFriday
[edit]

As in the previous year, the Gendergap working group, in collaboration with the institute for genderstudies Atria, organised a monthly WikiFriday. Every 4th Friday of the month a theme was worked on in the Atria library in Amsterdam, where a volunteer from Wikimedia Nederland was present to help with the first steps on Wikipedia. (Future plans: We are discussing with IHLIA LGBT Heritage to organise similar monthly writing events focussing on gay and lesbian topics.)

Amnesty International Wiki-a-thons
[edit]
Guide to writing about female human rights activists

On the first of March we kicked of a series of Amnesty wiki-a-thons in Amsterdam, with the goal to have more articles on female human rights defenders on Wikipedia. Amnesty made sure there were sources on the human rights defenders and printed them: names of the rights defenders went on post-its up on the wall. Wikimedia volunteers took care of the Wikidata-part. Participants choosed a post-it with a name they were interested in and collected the paper with sources from Amnesty and started writing. Wikimedia volunteers went around and helped the participants with their first steps and collected their usernames. Afterwards, all articles were checked for the Wikipedia markup, categories and Wikidata connections. See also the new Learning Pattern.

International Womens Day
[edit]

Several organisations (Libraries, Amnesty International, Watershed etc) approached us and asked for support with organizing Wiki-events on International Women's Day. We have, where possible, connected them with volunteers from the Dutch community, provided training materials, and we have taken the opportunity to test our manual 'How to organize a Wiki event'.

Events organised by/with support of Wikimedia Nederland on International Womens Day:

  • November 2018 - March 8 - Online on Wikipedia - #100wikiwomen online writing challenge
  • March 1st - Amsterdam - Amnesty International - Wiki-a-thon: writing about women's human rights defenders
  • March 8 and 9 - Utrecht - WikiConNL - Presentations and panel discussion on diversity/inclusiveness on Wikimedia and in the heritage sector, Wiki-a-thon: Amnesty International
  • March 8 - Eindhoven - De Watershed - Art+Feminism
  • March 8 - Hengelo - Hengelo Library - Lecture Female artists in the 20th century
  • March 8 - Maastricht - Cell Foundation - Wikigap event
  • March 9 - March 22 - Online on Dutch Wikipedia - Writing week on First-wave feminism
  • March 21 - Hengelo - Wikikring Twente
  • March 22 - Amsterdam - WikiFriday at Atria on the First feminist wave in the Netherlands
Gendergap plans for Q3-4
[edit]

After two successful TechStorms in 2018 the gender gap working group will organize a new Wiki TechStorm in 2019 on November 22nd and 23rd. A 2-day international event in the Netherlands where participants will work together on a more technical approach to various projects such as Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, WikiCite, but also Wikipedia. We are experimenting with new ways to make the Techstorm event / Tech community more inclusive and to increase results for the Techtstorm. In january we have published our report on the previous Techstorms and will keep the lessons learned in mind while organising the next Techstorm.

Longer running programmes
  • Netherlands and the world: focussing on content that is relevant worldwide, especially for emerging Wiki-communities. This programme also includes our work with immigrant communities, in particular from the Dutch Caribbean
  • Capacity building in the GLAM-sector: initiating and supporting Wikipedian in Residence programmes, providing training on upload tools, editing Wikipedia, and Wikidata. We will also expand our range of online tools, checklists and ‘how to’ information, which help partners organise events and work with the Wikimedia community without support from WMNL

New or changed activities for 2019:

  • We will strengthen our involvement in lobby and public affairs, increasing the Wikimedia Nederland and Wikipedia profile in public and political discussions about free knowledge, internet freedom and copyright. We will work with other parties, such as Kennisland, Creative Commons, Bits of Freedom to avoid duplication of effort.
  • We hope to establish an externally funded longer running cooperation programme with libraries. In 2018, we are carrying out a an exploration of the library sector in the Netherlands (public, academic and specialised libraries) to assess whether such a longer running programme is feasible. This exploration is funded by the Stichting Pica (a grantmaker focussing on library innovation) who have indicated that they may be interested in funding the cooperation programme.

Wiki Goes Caribbean: a Wikimedia Nederland working mission to Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao

[edit]
During WikiGoesCaribbean writing events we don't serve our trademark stroopwafel but 'festivalkoekjes'- very popular on the Dutch Caribbean islands.

Since 2018 Wikimedia Nederland has been actively incorporating the Caribbean part of the Netherlands into its work programme. This is part of our overall ambition to increase diversity - both in content and in the communities. At the moment, for practical reasons the focus of Wiki Goes Caribbean is on the islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

It all started with a cooperation between Wikimedia Nederland and UNESCO Nederland on the Memory of the World Register on documentary heritage. This cooperation lead to the conclusion that, in general, information on the history, culture and society of the Dutch Caribbean on Wikiprojects left a lot to be desired. Also, not many people from the Caribbean were active Wikimedians.  Our aim is to improve content and support the development of an active Wikicommunity.

Our first step was to reach out to organisations and institutions focussing on Dutch Caribbean culture, and to the Dutch Caribbean communities in the Netherlands.  Editors with an interest in Caribbean heritage, society and culture now gather once a month at the National Archive in Den Haag to work on articles. We have had sessions focussing on women, plantations and food.

The next step was establishing a working partnership with GLAMs, universities and heritage organisations on the Dutch Caribbean islands. We provided a Skype-based train-the-trainer programme and training materials. The participants were enthousiastic and keen to apply what they had learned. but found it difficult to start Wiki-activities from scratch, without anyone to fall back on.

From April 26 to May 11 2019, three Dutch Wikimedians went on a mission to Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. In close consultation with our partners on the islands, they had developed a busy programme of workshops, training sessions and meetings. Goal:

  • to give further support to the budding Wiki-community on the islands
  • to train trainers
  • to work with the GLAM and education sector on the islands.

In total the team gave 9 training sessions, had 7 meetings and gave 2 general presentations.

This mission was funded by Wikimedia Nederland from a private donation.

For anyone interested in finding out more about this mission:  this report gives an impression of the goals, results and the concrete (follow-up) agreements that have been made.

Plans for Q3-4:

  • ensuring that Wikiwork in the Dutch Caribbean can continue by raising funds and getting support from the authorities. We met with the Minister Plenipotentiary of Curaçao in July and have a meeting with the Dutch Ministry for Culture and Education set up for September.
  • WMNL provided a Wikimania scholarship to one of the participants from Aruba
  • continue to support activities on the islands and our writing events & content donations in the European Netherlands.

Libraries: working towards a sustainable partnership - and funding

[edit]

In recent years, there have been several collaborative projects between libraries and editors of Wikipedia. Libraries that share their collections through Wikipedia and related projects have a wider reach than through their own channels. Wikipedia articles are also written in libraries during special Wiki meetings, giving libraries an additional route to interact and support their audience. WMNL has ongoing partnerships with the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library), several university libraries, the library of the Institute for Gender Studies Atria and a number of public libraries. We are looking at ways to expand this programme and work towards a future where wiki-partnerships are integrated into the workprogrammes of mosty ( preferably all) libraries in the Netherlands. Also, we are looking for funding for such work as we consider it unlikely that WMF will support a programme of this size. This is part of our effort to raise funds in the Netherlands.

Last year, we obtained a grant from the PICA foundation to assess the feasibility of developing such a programme and setting up a 'coalition of the willing': a group of libraries keen to take part in a two-year follow up project.

We continued, with the support of the PICA Foundation, the field study  into the collaboration between Wikimedia and libraries in the Netherlands. We distributed an online survey through our network on February 15 and organised a knowledge meeting on 15 May for library staff. Programme managers, information and collection specialists, communication specialists and policy makers from all forms of libraries or related organisations were invited to participate. The results of desk research and network analysis were presented, as well as examples of collaborative projects.

In the project we looked for an answer to the question whether sustainable cooperation between Wikimedia and Dutch libraries will yield results for both parties in the short term. The answer we found is Yes. A total of 19 libraries signed a declaration of intent for a follow-up project to shape sustainable cooperation. We reported this to the PICA foundation and got the green light for submitting an application for a two year partnership programme.

During the summer months, the new project proposal will be written and will be submitted to the PICA Foundation in September.

Content donations

[edit]

Several GLAM institutions in the Netherlands are in the process of sharing their collections via Wikimedia. We guide them through the steps of uploading content. This involves guidance throughout the entire process, from information about copyrights to technical support for the upload itself. Where possible, we link GLAMs to members of the Community. Because of staffchanges, the focus on WikiconNL, Wiki Goes Caribbean and the library programme, processing content donations was not as much a priority as normally. We are planning to catch up in Q3-4.

The following donations are in process:

  • Uploads Livius about archaeological and historical sites (appr 50.000 images),
  • Utrechts Archief (appr 123.000 images)
  • Regionaal Archief Alkmaar (appr 10.000 images),
  • National Archives Curaçao (appr. 1.500 images),
  • National Library Aruba (appr. 2.000),
  • University Library of Leiden (appr. 350 images).

WMNL is preparing a series of master classes to be held in the autumn, in which GLAM institutions will be included step by step in the entire process. From copyright to uploading images. The aim is for GLAMs to be better able to do their own uploads in the future at the end of the project. Since the beginning of this year we have extra focus on Wikidata in preparation for our Linked Open Data masterclasses during the second half of 2019 (Deel Je Data/Share your data). We expect to have considerably higher results regarding Wikidata uploads than we had projected at the beginning of the year.

Education

[edit]

The University of Maastricht organised an event to contribute to 1lib1ref. The University by now is able to run their programme of Wiki-activities independently, with the support of a small group of local Wikipedians.

ITV, the college training translators and interpreters, offers their students the chance to translate Wikipedia articles into Dutch as part of their mandatory traineeship. Two students translated articles from French into Dutch at the request of Dutch Wikipedians.

The Institute for Social Studies is going to integrate contributing to the Wikimediaprojects in their module on academic skills. As many students at ISS are from the global south, this could have an impact well beyong the Netherlands.

Other activities

[edit]

Wiki Scientists

Two Wikimedians in Residence (WIR) joined the Academic Heritage Foundation (Stichting Academisch Erfgoed) in January 2019 for the Wiki Scientists project to make the biographical data of Dutch professors and leading scientists available on Wikidata in a structured way. The WIRs will support the eleven affiliated universities to collect and process the biographical data on this platform. The project will also include investigating to what extent the GDPR applies to purposefully gathering biographical information on living individuals on WikiData. We will share the outcome of this investigation with the the international community. More information (in Dutch) on the website of Stichting Academisch Erfgoed.

Writing weeks about the province of Zeeland

From 1 to 14 April 2019, in collaboration with volunteers from the Wiki goes Caribbean project, a double writing week about Zeeland was organised with the aim of improving and expanding the content about this province on Wikipedia. In this context, a writing afternoon took place on 6 April in the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg.

Wikipedia course historical associations

Wikimedian-in-Residence Michelle van Lanschot organised a multi-day course 'Writing for Wikipedia' for members of historical associations from November 2018 to January 2019. During the course, they learned how to make information available through Wikipedia so that it can be consulted by an international audience.

Nature

During the National Butterfly Day on 2 March, the results of the photo contest organised by SoortenNL and the Nature project group of Wikimedia Nederland were announced. The contest yielded more than 1000 entries and there were a lot of beautiful and unique shots. The jury finally chose eight prize winners.

Wikisalon

[edit]

On January 15, 2019, the day Wikipedia turned 18, representatives of  partners, allies and Wikimedians gathered at the Villa Jongerius in Utrecht at the invitation of Wikimedia Nederland. The purpose of this "wiki salon" was to exchange ideas about the future of Wikimedia Nederland. This in the context of the Movement Strategy 2030: the development of a strategy for the worldwide Wikimedia movement. Three main strands appeared during the discussion about WMNL's future:

  • Wikimedia Nederland should be assertive and defend free knowledge through lobbying and information.
  • Wikimedia Nederland is the contact point for partners and institutions that want to contribute to free knowledge, and their guide during their first steps towards the Wikimedia projects.
  • Wikimedia Nederland must help new editors find their way and offer them a safe environment. Wikimedia Nederland must play a role in making the Wikimedia community more accessible.

A full summary of the meeting can be found here.

WikiconNL

[edit]

On 8 and 9 March, we organised WikiconNL, the continuation of the yearly Wikimedia Conference Netherlands (WCN). In contrast to previous years, this year's conference was a two-day conference with the aim of attracting, in addition to the Wikimedia volunteers, researchers, Wikimedia major users, employees of archives, libraries, museums and other heritage institutions, and interested parties in free knowledge.

The theme was 'Wikipedia is more'. As Wikipedia turned 18 this year and is therefore 'an adult', we entered into discussions with all participants about the development of Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. How did they grow? What kind of world does Wikimedia operate in, and what developments should the Wikimedia movement take into account? We also discussed at length the possibilities for collaboration and the roles that Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons can play in this.

The first day, Friday, 8 March, was in terms of programming mainly aimed at heritage and educational institutions and professionals in general. There was more emphasis on interesting and appealing user cases, presentations by heritage institutions, lectures, a GLAM track and an interactive panel with Marleen Stikker, prominent advocate of free and innovative use of Internet, Karel Luyben, national coordinator open science and former WMF Chair Jan Bart de Vreede. On this day, 102 people were present.

The second day, Saturday 9 March, was mainly designed for the active editors and volunteers of the various Wiki projects with interactive workshops, active do-it-yourself sessions, technical training and informal meetings. On the second day, 115 people were present at WikiconNL.

The respondents of the evaluation questionnaire indicated that participants of WikiconNL were very satisfied with the programming.

Wiki Saturday

[edit]

The first speaker for the Wiki Saturday was Linda Duits on 6 April. Linda Duits is a writer, publicist and researcher specialized in gender and media studies. Other themes offered during Wiki Saturdays: Introduction Workshop Wikidata, Using Wikidata on Wikipedia (continuation of the Introduction Workshop Wikidata).

Communication

GLAM brochure

The contents of the GLAM brochure were updated with the help of heritage institutions and the new version has been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. In the first half of 2019 the GLAM-brochure has had 1256 pageviews.

Blog posts

Eleven blog posts were published on the website of Wikimedia Nederland in order to certain Wiki projects and collaborative projects. A good example of this is the blog post 'Wikimedia Indonesia and Wikimedia Netherlands: cooperation across the borders of continents and time'. Through a blog post we also paid attention to the blockade of Wikipedia in Turkey.
