Grants:APG/Proposals/2018-2019 round 1/Wikimedia Nederland/Impact report form

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Metrics and results overview - all programs

[edit]

For the entire Wikimedia movement and all its affiliaties the year 2019 was a transition year. Movement wide, there are discussions about our strategy towards 2030 and Wikimedia Nederland too is asking itself how it can best contribute to the mission over the coming years. What can we do from the Netherlands to maximise our input to 'knowledge equity and knowledge as a service'?

For Wikimedia Nederland 2019 had several highlights

  • our Wiki Goes Caribbean programme is flourishing. This programme aims to involve the Dutch Caribbean communities in the Wikimedia movement and improve coverage of Dutch Caribbean past and present in the Wikimedia projects. We hold monthly editor meetings at the National Archives in The Hague and we managed to organise a two week mission to the Dutch Caribbean islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao in May 2019. Three Dutch Wikimedians trained GLAM and university staff, who are now beginning to develop their own Wiki-programmes.
  • work on Gender Gap is well established: we held our third TechStorm, a hacking event for newbies and experienced Wikimedians that specifically aims to draw in women and individuals with a non-binary gender identity. International Women's Day was marked by a plethora of events. We initiated a cooperation with IHLIA, - LGBT heritage and continued our partnership with ATRIA, Institute on gender equality and women's history.
  • we organised our annual conference in a revised format: one day focussing on staff of (potential) partner organisations, and one day focussing on the community. More than 200 people attended - and enjoyed the new format.
  • we experimented with a new form of capacity building for GLAMs: the Share-your-Data formula. This is a series of four masterclasses, focussing on topics such as copyright, working with WikiData and content uploads.

Sustainability of operations

The WMF grant to WMNL has been frozen for several years now. As prices and salaries increase yearly, this means that year after year the grant 'buys less'. Activities such as the training mission to the Antilles and the gender TechStorm, which focus on knowledge equity, we were only able to organise because of a one-off private donation received in 2018. However, we frequently lack the resources to organise a steady stream of follow-up activities.

We increased our efforts in external fundraising but the results are mixed. We received our first grant from a government agency and are discussing further cooperation. A grant from the PICA foundation (supporting innovation in the Dutch library sector) allowed us to explore the potential of extending our work with libraries. The outcomes were positive: libraries in the Netherlands (academic, public or specialised) are keen to develop wiki-activities. However, a second, much larger grant application to the PICA Foundation for a 2-year programme of work failed because of misconceptions - and to some extent concerns - about cooperation with the Wikimedia projects and the Wikimedia movement. We have noticed that the increased profile and standing of the Wikimedia projects is leading executive levels in the Dutch heritage sector to see it as a 'foreign' competitor to national efforts to provide online access to heritage.

WMNL board and staff were heavily involved in the movement strategy process, acting as coordinators and participating in working groups and international events. As a result - and because of our increased efforts in fundraising - time spent on actual programmatic work fell in 2019 and 'overhead' increased. Although we are committed to the strategy process and take our responsibility as a member of a global movement very seriously, we will not be able to maintain our involvement at this level.

New years reception and WikiUilen

On Saturday 12 January, the New Year's reception of Wikimedia Nederland took place in the Royal Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem. Some sixty Wikipedians attended. As usual, the WikiUilen were awarded to the most appreciated contributions to the Dutch Wikipedia in 2018. The Dutch national newspaper Volkskrant paid attention to the WikiUilen ceremony in its edition of Monday, January 14.

Birthday party Wikiwoordenboek

On 1 May 2019, it was 15 years ago that the Dutch WikiDictionary was launched. Wikimedia Nederland supported the organisation of an appropriate birthday party. The discussions provided inspiration for a working meeting on the lexicographical possibilities of WikiData.

Wikipedia's 18th birthday Barbecue

On Saturday July 13, we organized a Summer BBQ for the Wikimedia community. About 30 Wikimedians enjoyed a barbecue and birthday cake, because the 18th anniversary of the Dutch-language Wikipedia was also celebrated

Organising events for participants with special needs

The survey among editors of Dutch Wikipedia which we held in December 2018 (see our 2018 impact report) showed that the Wikipedia community has a higher than average percentage of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. (NLWP community 13% - Dutch population 1-2%) This is now also increasingly recognised in the wider Wikimedia movement. As a chapter, we feel that we have have a responsibility to ensure that every Wikimedian can participate in events we organise. For this reason, we have written a learning pattern with suggestions for event organisers. With a number of relatively simple adjustments, events can be made more comfortable for participants who are sensitive to sensory overload.

Event organising and ASD
Wikimedians who are susceptible to sensory overload do not want to be pampered or treated differently. They want to participate. With some relatively simple modifications events can be made more comfortable for them:
  • Don’t make things unnecessarily complicated and avoid too many things happening at the same time. This relates to event programmes, but also to the layout of information materials and website, background music and decorations, the design of social events...
  • Avoid confusion and uncertainty: provide clear and correct information about what will be happening when and where. Cluttered, not user-friendly event communication is often more of a trigger for sensory overload than the fact that many things are happening.
  • Provide simple means to escape the noise and the crowd, during the event itself and during social gatherings.
  • Ensure that (one or more) event organisers can recognise when people are beginning to suffer from sensory overload, and know how to provide adequate support. If there's no one in the organiser team able to provide such a support, there may be groups available offering such kind of work.
Community Support: Small grants
[edit]

Wikimedia Netherlands gave seven small grants in 2019 for an amount of € 1,584.39. This mainly concerned requests for reimbursement of travel costs, entrance fees, prize money for writing meetings and the purchase of books for various projects.

In addition, at the request of the community we supported hiring an external expert to make improvements to the software of Wikiportret, a tool that facilitates easy-uploads of portrait photographs as illustration for Wikipedia articles. (See Commons Category Wikiportret Uploads)

Community support: Scholarships and expense allowances
[edit]

Wikimedia Nederland made travel grants available for participation in international meetings. Seven Dutch and Flemish volunteers participated in Wikimania in Stockholm in 2019, five in the Wikimedia Hackathon in Prague and five in the Wikidata conference in Berlin. We also supported the participation of a volunteer in the Train-the-trainers course organised by WMUK.

Diversity: Gendergap

[edit]
WikiFriday
[edit]

As in the previous year, the Gendergap working group, in collaboration with the institute for genderstudies Atria, organised a monthly WikiFriday. Every 4th Friday of the month a theme was worked on in the Atria library in Amsterdam, where a volunteer from Wikimedia Nederland was present to help with the first steps on Wikipedia

New partnership: LGBT
[edit]

We developed a cooperation with IHLIA LGBT Heritage to organise similar monthly writing events focussing on gay and lesbian topics. These will start in 2020. Kick off-will be an editor training for IHLIA staff and volunteers.

Amnesty International Wiki-a-thons
[edit]
Guide to writing about female human rights activists

On the first of March we kicked off a series of Amnesty wiki-a-thons in Amsterdam, with the goal to have more articles on female human rights defenders on Wikipedia. Amnesty made sure there were sources on the human rights defenders. Wikimedia volunteers went around and helped the participants with their first steps and collected their usernames. Afterwards, all articles were checked for the Wikipedia markup, categories and Wikidata connections. See also the new Learning Pattern.

International Womens Day
[edit]

Several organisations (Public libraries, Amnesty International, Watershed etc) approached us and asked for support with organizing Wiki-events on International Women's Day. We have, where possible, connected them with volunteers from the Dutch community, provided training materials, and we have taken the opportunity to test our manual 'How to organize a Wiki event'.

Events organised by/with support of Wikimedia Nederland on International Womens Day:

  • November 2018 - March 8 - Online on Wikipedia - #100wikiwomen online writing challenge
  • March 1st - Amsterdam - Amnesty International - Wiki-a-thon: writing about women's human rights defenders
  • March 8 and 9 - Utrecht - WikiConNL - Presentations and panel discussion on diversity/inclusiveness on Wikimedia and in the heritage sector, Wiki-a-thon: Amnesty International
  • March 8 - Eindhoven - De Watershed - Art+Feminism
  • March 8 - Hengelo - Hengelo Library - Lecture Female artists in the 20th century
  • March 8 - Maastricht - Cell Foundation - Wikigap event
  • March 9 - March 22 - Online on Dutch Wikipedia - Writing week on First-wave feminism
  • March 21 - Hengelo - Wikikring Twente
  • March 22 - Amsterdam - WikiFriday at Atria on the First feminist wave in the Netherlands

Diversity in tech: Wiki TechStorm 2019
[edit]

On November 22nd and 23rd we organised our third Wiki TechStorm, a 2-day international event where participants worked together on a more technical approach to various projects such as Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, WikiCite, and also Wikipedia. During this two-day international event, some sixty people came together in Amsterdam to work on uploading data, images and sound to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, creating templates, writing scripts and developing tools and apps. The Wiki TechStorm 2019 differed from other hackathons in that this techstorm offered a program that largely focused on newcomers and in particular on women and people with a non-binary gender identity. Of course there was also enough space for the more experienced developers.

Longer running programmes
  • Netherlands and the world: focussing on content that is relevant worldwide, especially for emerging Wiki-communities. This programme also includes our work with the Dutch Caribbean
  • Capacity building in the GLAM-sector: initiating and supporting Wikipedian in Residence programmes, providing training on upload tools, editing Wikipedia, Wikidata. We will also expand our range of online tools, checklists and ‘how to’ information, which help partners organise events and work with the Wikimedia community without support from WMNL

New or changed activities for 2019:

  • We will strengthen our involvement in lobby and public affairs, increasing the Wikimedia Nederland and Wikipedia profile in public and political discussions about free knowledge, internet freedom and copyright. We will work with other parties, such as Kennisland, Creative Commons, Bits of Freedom to avoid duplication of effort.
  • We hope to establish an externally funded longer running cooperation programme with libraries. In 2018, we are carrying out a an exploration of the library sector in the Netherlands (public, academic and specialised libraries) to assess whether such a longer running programme is feasible. This exploration is funded by the Stichting Pica (a grantmaker focussing on library innovation) who have indicated that they may be interested in funding the cooperation programme.

Wiki Goes Caribbean: a Wikimedia Nederland working mission to Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao

[edit]
During WikiGoesCaribbean writing events we don't serve our trademark stroopwafel but 'festivalkoekjes'- very popular on the Dutch Caribbean islands.

Since 2018 Wikimedia Nederland has been actively incorporating the Caribbean part of the Netherlands into its work programme. This is part of our overall ambition to increase diversity - both in content and within the communities. At the moment, for practical reasons the focus of Wiki Goes Caribbean is on the islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

It all started with a cooperation between Wikimedia Nederland and UNESCO Nederland on the Memory of the World Register on documentary heritage. This cooperation lead to the conclusion that, in general, information on the history, culture and society of the Dutch Caribbean on Wikiprojects left a lot to be desired. Also, not many people from the Caribbean were active Wikimedians. Our aim is to improve content and support the development of an active Wikicommunity.

Our first step was to reach out to organisations and institutions focussing on Dutch Caribbean culture, and to the Dutch Caribbean communities in the Netherlands.  Editors with an interest in Caribbean heritage, society and culture now gather once a month at the National Archive in The Hague to work on articles. We have had sessions focussing on women, plantations and food.

The next step was establishing a working partnership with GLAMs, universities and heritage organisations on the Dutch Caribbean islands. We provided a Skype-based train-the-trainer programme and training materials. The participants were enthousiast and keen to apply what they had learned but found it difficult to start Wiki-activities from scratch, without anyone to fall back on.

From April 26 to May 11 2019, three Dutch Wikimedians went on a mission to Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. In close consultation with our partners on the islands, they had developed a busy programme of workshops, training sessions and meetings. Goal:

  • to give further support to the budding Wiki-community on the islands
  • to train trainers
  • to work with the GLAM and education sector on the islands.

In total the team gave 9 training sessions, had 7 meetings and gave 2 general presentations.

As a follow-up, we provided a Wikimania scholarship to one of the participants from Aruba which allowed him to deepen his understanding of the Wikimedia projects and establish personal connections with Wikimedians.

In the second half of the year, we saw the first content donations from GLAM institutes on the Dutch Caribbean islands. Also the University of Curaçao is including a wikipedia module in its courses, specifically aiming to improve content on the Papiamentu Wikipedia. The University feels that editing Wikipedia in Papiamentu is a great opportunity to support the language.

Our challenge is to continue to provide support to the partners in the Dutch Caribbean in their wiki-activities. This will require resources (staff and finance). The mission to the Dutch Antilles was funded by Wikimedia Nederland from a one-off private donation.

Wiki goes Caribbean is a collaborative project of Wikimedia Nederland and UNESCO Commission Nederland, the National Archives of the Netherlands, the National Library of Aruba, the University of Aruba, the Federation of Museums and Nature, the Bureau of Monument Care, the University of Curaçao, the Fundashon Históriko Kultural Boneriano, the Archivo Bonairo and the interuniversity research project Traveling Caribbean Heritage.

Partly Wiki goes Caribbean and party Education: Professor Michiel van Kempen has given the students in his West-Indian Literature classes Wikipedia assignments for several years now. He wrote a blog about his experiences (in Dutch).

Public Libraries

[edit]

In 2019, we started two new collaborative projects between public libraries and Wikipedia editors. The libraries provide a home base for groups of new and experienced Wikipedians who meet regularly.

WikiCafe Den Bosch: Babel Den Bosch started on 5 November 2019 with a WikiCafé where people who want to contribute to Wikipedia can share their knowledge with each other.

Wiki Café Tiel: The Rivierenland Library organized a Wiki Café in 2019 in collaboration with the Flipje & Streekmuseum Tiel. On August 24 a real WikiWalk event took place in the center of Tiel: twenty enthusiastic photographers held a photo safari under the expert guidance of the historians Wim Veerman and Peter Schipper. A walk was taken along historic sites to photograph them for use on Wikipedia to illustrate existing or writing articles. The follow-up meeting took place on October 10, 2019 in Tiel Library, where an experienced Wikipedian explained how the photos taken could be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

In addition, there already were regular Wiki-café's in Tilburg and Hengelo.

WikiCafe Tilburg: Wikipedia editors from Brabant met again in 2019 at the LocHal Library where they learned more about writing, researching sources and other matters surrounding Wikipedia.

Wikikring Twente: the Hengelo Library again provided monthly support and space to Wikipedia groups in 2019 by organizing a Wikikring Twente together with Wikimedia Nederland. Initially to write about Twente and for Gendergap, but space was also created for other subjects.

Working towards a sustainable partnership with libraries - highs and lows
In recent years, there have been several collaborative projects between libraries and editors of Wikipedia. Libraries that share their collections through Wikipedia and related projects have a wider reach than through their own channels. Wikipedia articles are also written in libraries during special Wiki meetings, giving libraries an additional route to interact and support their audience. WMNL has ongoing partnerships with the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library), several university libraries, the library of the Institute for Gender Studies Atria and a number of public libraries. We are looking at ways to expand this programme and work towards a future where wiki-partnerships are integrated into the workprogrammes of most (preferably all) libraries in the Netherlands. Also, we are looking for funding for this programme as we consider it unlikely that WMF will support a programme of this size. This is part of our effort to raise funds in the Netherlands.

We obtained a grant from the PICA foundation, which supports innovation in the Dutch library sector, to assess the feasibility of developing such a programme and setting up a 'coalition of the willing': a group of libraries keen to take part in a two-year follow up project. We distributed an online survey through our network on February 15 and organised a knowledge meeting on 15 May for library staff. Programme managers, information and collection specialists, communication specialists and policy makers from all forms of libraries or related organisations were invited to participate. The results of desk research and network analysis were presented, as well as examples of collaborative projects.

In the project we looked for an answer to the question whether sustainable cooperation between Wikimedia and Dutch libraries will yield results for both parties in the short term. The answer we found is 'Yes'. A total of 19 libraries signed a declaration of intent for a follow-up project to shape sustainable cooperation. We reported this to the PICA foundation and got the green light for submitting an application for a two year partnership programme.

However, this second grant application to the PICA Foundation for a 2-year programme of work, which was supported by a coalition of libraries and library-organisations including the National Library and OCLC, failed, partly through lack of understanding of the way the Wikimedia projects and community work. The grantmakers were fearful that cooperation with the Wikimedia projects would compete with national programmes for access to digital heritage. This was somewhat shocking, as many of the institutions whose senior managers were represented on the board of the PICA foundation are long standing and enthusiastic partners of Wikimedia Nederland. We are planning to address this knowledge gap in 2020.

Content donations

[edit]

Several GLAM institutions in the Netherlands are in the process of sharing their collections via Wikimedia. We guide them through the different steps of uploading content. This involves guidance throughout the entire process, from information about copyrights to technical support for the upload itself. In the first half of the year, processing content donations was not as high a priority as normally because of staffchanges, the focus on WikiconNL, Wiki Goes Caribbean and the library programme. In Q3-4 we initiated the upload process for several larger donations. Our intention was to complete these in 2019 but they were delayed for different reasons and will be finalised in 2020:

  • Uploads Livius about archaeological and historical sites (appro. 50.000 images) - delayed because of copyright and metadata issues
  • Utrechts Archief (approx. 123.000 images) - Utrecht Archief started a crowd-sourcing campaign to add appropriate meta-data
  • Regionaal Archief Alkmaar (approx. 10.000 images) - technical hitch in Patty Pan process.
Spin-off of GLAM partnerships: 300.000 images uploaded
The National Archives of the Netherlands were one of the first partners of Wikimedia Nederland and have remained the most active over the years. They release huge amounts of material under a CC-By license and have donated important content to Wikimedia Commons. Within the framework of this partnership a Wikimedian has now uploaded over 300.000 images to Commons. This is a perfect example of what Wikimedia Nederland hopes to achieve through its GLAM work: partner institutes and volunteers working together without need for extensive support or guidance.

Share your data

[edit]

In 2019, Wikimedia Netherlands developed a new approach to capacity building about the Wikimedia projects for staff of GLAMs: four Share your Data master classes in which institutions are taken step by step into the sharing of image and data via Wiki projects such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons: from copyright to uploading images.

On Thursday 19 September 2019 the Share your Data process started with a master class on copyright. During the meeting, the challenges that museums, archives and libraries face in determining and assessing copyright, portrait rights and even GDPR related issues in releasing parts of their collection were discussed in detail.

During the subsequent master classes, participants were introduced to Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Pattypan and Open Refine. During the Wiki TechStorm on November 22 and 23 in Amsterdam, part of the Share your Data participants joined to actually upload images, data and (parts of) collections to Wikidata and / or Wikimedia Commons.

Participants were positive about the Share your Data experience and reported that they feel more confident to start contributing to the Wikimedia projects. We will keep using this formula.

Education

[edit]
  • The Department of Book Studies and Manuscript Studies and the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam organized the course 'Old Books in a New World' in January 2019. Attention was paid to Wikipedia, in the form of an introduction and a writing session about Wikipedia and the book. The theme was European printers, publishers and cartographers 1500–1950. Seventeen participants were introduced to all aspects of creating, editing and illustrating a Wikipedia entry.
  • We linked the University of Amsterdam's departments of Cultural Information Studies and Archaeology to two experienced Wikimedians to explore whether wikibase and mediawiki-software have potential for data and datamanagement in research projects.
  • The University of Maastricht by now is able to run their programme of Wiki-activities independently with the support of a small group of local Wikipedians. As with the example mentioned above about the National Archives: this is exactly what we aim to achieve. (See the ENWP projectpage for more information).
  • ITV, the college for translators and interpreters, offers their students the possibility to translate Wikipedia articles into Dutch as part of their mandatory traineeship. This year, four students translated articles from French into Dutch at the request of Dutch Wikipedians. We are now also including an option to translate featured articles on topics that do not yet have an article on Dutch Wikipedia. This is an effective way to improve quality of content and the students enjoy working on the longer and more challenging texts.
  • The Institute for Social Studies is going to integrate contributing to the Wikimedia projects in their module on academic skills. As many students at ISS are from the global south, this could have an impact well beyond the Netherlands.

Other activities

[edit]
  • Wiki Scientists. Two Wikimedians in Residence (WIR) joined the Academic Heritage Foundation (Stichting Academisch Erfgoed) in January 2019 for the Wiki Scientists project to make the biographical data of Dutch professors and leading scientists available on Wikidata in a structured way. The WIRs will support the eleven affiliated universities to collect and process the biographical data on this platform. The project will also include investigating to what extent the GDPR applies to purposefully gathering biographical information on living individuals on WikiData. We will share the results of this investigation with the international community. More information (in Dutch) on the website of Stichting Academisch Erfgoed.
  • Writing weeks about the province of Zeeland. From 1 to 14 April 2019, in collaboration with volunteers from the Wiki goes Caribbean project, a double writing week about Zeeland was organised with the aim of improving and expanding the content about this province on Wikipedia. In this context, a writing afternoon took place on 6 April in the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg.
  • Wikipedia course for historical associations. Wikimedian-in-Residence Michelle van Lanschot organised a multi-day course 'Writing for Wikipedia' for members of historical associations from November 2018 to January 2019. During the course, they learned how to make information available through Wikipedia so that it can be consulted by an international audience.
  • Nature photo contests. A photo contest organised by SoortenNL and the Nature project group of Wikimedia Nederland yielded more than 1000 entries and there were a lot of beautiful and unique shots. NIBI, the Netherlands Institute of Biology, organized a photo contest with 'Biology' in the summer of 2019 in collaboration with the Nature project group. 243 biology photos have been placed on Wikimedia Commons in the category "Photo contest Week of Biology 2019".
  • Parliament. Many topics related to the Dutch parliament are already covered on Wikipedia. However, the information is often limited, some topics are not updated or difficult to find. For that reason, the House of Representatives and Wikimedian Hanno Lans organized in collaboration with WMNL a Wikipedia editathon in parliament on Friday November 29, 2019. The afternoon started with a tour of the Minutes Chamber and the archives for inspiration. After that, a number of experienced Wikipedians got to work writing Wikipedia articles and uploading images to Wikimedia Commons.

European affairs

[edit]

Wikimedia Nederland and a number of other European chapters cooperate in the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU (FKAGEU) to make the voice of the Wikimedia movement heard at the European Commission and the European Parliament.

The EU Copyright Directive aimed at harmonizing various aspects of copyright in the European Union's digital single market. Representatives of Wikimedia Nederland were regularly present in Strasbourg and Brussels to show Dutch MEPs how we handle copyright, and to stress the importance of regulations that do justice to the interests of the new digital world.

The government consultation for the Dutch implementation proposal was open from 2 July to 2 September 2019. Wikimedia Nederland organized a meeting at its office in Utrecht to exchange views and opinions with the Wikimedia representative in Brussels. Because the vision of Wikimedia Netherlands on the proposal for "transposition" of the Directive to Dutch law was very similar in content to the draft responses of Open Netherlands / Creative Commons and DEN, the board of Wikimedia Nederland has joined their response.

Outreach

[edit]

Public Domain Day

[edit]

On Thursday January 3rd the KB - National Library of the Netherlands and Creative Commons Netherlands organized with the support of the National Archives of the Netherlands and Wikimedia Nederland a day full of lectures focusing on works by famous artists, writers and artists who died in 1948.

Wikisalon

[edit]

On January 15, 2019, the day Wikipedia turned 18, representatives of partners, allies and Wikimedians gathered at the Villa Jongerius in Utrecht at the invitation of Wikimedia Nederland. The purpose of this "wiki salon" was to exchange ideas about the future of Wikimedia Nederland. This in the context of the Movement Strategy 2030: the development of a strategy for the worldwide Wikimedia movement. Three main strands appeared during the discussion about WMNL's future:

  • Wikimedia Nederland should be assertive and defend free knowledge through lobbying and information.
  • Wikimedia Nederland is the contact point for partners and institutions that want to contribute to free knowledge, and their guide during their first steps towards the Wikimedia projects.
  • Wikimedia Nederland must help new editors find their way and offer them a safe environment. Wikimedia Nederland must play a role in making the Wikimedia community more accessible.

A full summary of the meeting can be found here.

WikiconNL

[edit]

On 8 and 9 March we organised WikiconNL, the continuation of the yearly Wikimedia Conference Netherlands (WCN). In contrast to previous years, this year's conference was a two-day conference with the aim of attracting, in addition to the Wikimedia volunteers, researchers, Wikimedia major users, employees of archives, libraries, museums and other heritage institutions, and interested parties in free knowledge.

The theme was 'Wikipedia is more'. As Wikipedia turned 18 this year and is therefore 'an adult', we entered into discussions with all participants about the development of Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. How did they grow? What kind of world does Wikimedia operate in, and what developments should the Wikimedia movement take into account? We also discussed at length the possibilities for collaboration and the roles that Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons can play in this.

The first day, Friday, 8 March, was in terms of programming mainly aimed at heritage and educational institutions and professionals in general. There was more emphasis on interesting and appealing user cases, presentations by heritage institutions, lectures, a GLAM track and an interactive panel with Marleen Stikker, prominent advocate of free and innovative use of Internet, Karel Luyben, national coordinator open science and former WMF Chair Jan Bart de Vreede. On this day, 102 people were present.

The second day, Saturday 9 March, was mainly designed for the active editors and volunteers of the various Wiki projects with interactive workshops, active do-it-yourself sessions, technical training and informal meetings. On the second day 115 people attended the WikiconNL.

The respondents of the evaluation questionnaire indicated that participants of WikiconNL were very satisfied with the programming.

Communication

[edit]
  • GLAM brochure The contents of the GLAM brochure were updated with the help of heritage institutions and the new version has been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
  • Blog posts Seventeen blog posts were published on the website of Wikimedia Nederland in order to highlight certain Wiki projects and collaborative projects. A good example of this is the blog post 'Wikimedia Indonesia and Wikimedia Netherlands: cooperation across the borders of continents and time'. Through a blog post we also paid attention to the blockade of Wikipedia in Turkey.
  • Media coverage In 2019, activities of Wikimedia Nederland appeared in the media 33 times. The media were most interested in the Zeeland writing week and the training activities on Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. Tech media and platforms also paid a lot of attention to the TechStorm.

Governance

[edit]

Board

[edit]

The board elections took place during the General Assembly of 13 April. Mike Nikolaye and Harriet de Man resigned from the Board. Lizzy Jongma and Jan Bart de Vreede were elected.

Staff

[edit]

Arne Wossink, project coordinator, left Wikimedia Nederland after four years on March 1. He was replaced on October 1 by Michelle van Lanschot, who previously worked for several years as Wikimedian in Residence.

Fundraising

[edit]

Throughout the year, the Wikimedia Nederland board and executive director increased their efforts in fundraising. The WMF grant has been frozen for several years now, while at the same time interest within society for cooperation with the Wikimedia movement and projects is growing. This means that the Wikimedia Nederland team is continuously at full capacity or over; this inevitably leads to missed opportunities and a permanent sense of frustration that we are not able to really get the results we aim for. For example: the activities in the Dutch Caribbean could be developed thanks to the fact that a benefactor left us a considerable amount in their will. However, building on the foundation laid will not be possible within the constrictions of the current grant.

In 2019, we got our first government grant (for the Share your Data event) and we are exploring further possibilities with various government bodies. We find there is genuine interest and good will towards the Wikimedia projects, but that it is complicated to determine in which way there can be a financial arrangement between government parties on the one hand and the Wikimedia movement on the other, while taking into account the obligations of both. Money could come with strings attached, while Wikimedia cannot be tied down. Also, as we mentioned before, there is in some quarters an incomplete understanding of the Wikimedia projects and a fear that Wikimedia could somehow be a rival to the formal policies and platforms for digital heritage.
