Purpose of the report
[edit]This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their results to date. For progress reports, the time period for this report will the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). For impact reports, the time period for this report will be the full 12 months of this grant, including the period already reported on in the progress report (e.g. 1 January - 31 December of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.
Global metrics overview - all programs
[edit]We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees' programs. Please use the table below to let us know how your programs contributed to the Global Metrics. We understand not all Global Metrics will be relevant for all programs, so feel free to put "0" where necessary. For each program include the following table and

Telling your program stories - all programs
[edit]Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.
- We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
- Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
- We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
- We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past, and to report consistently over time.
- You are welcome to use the table below to report on any metrics or measures relevant to your program. These may or may not include the global metrics you put in the overview section above. You can also share your progress in another way if you do not find a table like this useful.

[edit]- Global metrics are an important starting point for grantees when it comes to measuring programmatic impact (Learning Patterns and Tutorial) but don’t stop there.
- Logic Models provide a framework for mapping your pathway to impact through the cause and effect chain from inputs to outputs to outcomes. Develop a logic model to map out your theory of change and determine the metrics and measures for your programs.
- Importantly, both qualitative and quantitative measures are important so consider both as you determine measures for your evaluation and be sure to ask the right questions to be sure to capture your program stories.

Overview of this quarter
[edit]The purpose of this section is to provide a brief overview of this report. Please use no more than 1-2 paragraphs to address the questions outlined below. You will have an opportunity to address these questions in detail elsewhere in this report.
CHANGES: Please describe how you changed your plans and budget based on the FDC allocation approved by the Board in December 2012, and your rationale for these changes. You can then use the changed plans and budget as the basis on which to report back on the first quarter.
- No changes since Q1.
HIGHLIGHTS: What were 1–2 important highlights of the past quarter? (These may include successes, challenges, lessons learned.)
- Umepedia. We tried to gain a lot of synergy effects around Umepedia and Umeå and it worked really well covering GLAM, educational and municipal institutions amongst others. This generated quite a lot of media.
- Got a law suit from BUS (Visual Arts Copyright Society in Sweden) for our website http://offentligkonst.se related to interpretation of freedom of panorama of public art which generated quite a lot of media.
WIKI-FOCUS: What Wikimedia projects was your entity focused on (e.g., Wiki Commons, French Wiktionary) this quarter?
- Swedish Wikipedia (and many others through the Umepedia Challenge), Wikimedia Commons and Swedish Wiktionary and Wikibooks.

Financial summary
[edit]The FDC requires information about how your entity received and spent money over the past year. The FDC distributes general funds, so your entity is not required to use funds exactly as outlined in the proposal. While line-item expenses will not be examined, the FDC and movement wants to understand why the entity spent money in the way it did. If variance in budgeted vs. actual is greater than 20%, please provide explanation in more detail. This helps the FDC understand the rationale behind any significant changes. - Activities conducted.
- Women on Wikipedia
- Two edit-a-thons were held in Umeå with two weeks apart. Only 4 participants but we got interviewed by the local tv station in a very nice interview.
- All staff members got a course in how language and gender can (often involuntarily) be used as power techniques, in order to be aware of such issues.
- We got new funds (342,478 SEK) from The Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society to continue the project another year.
- We participated at Nordiskt forum (The Nordic Forum), the largest feminist conference in the Nordic countries. 14 accounts were created. We also got 24 answers on a survey, which we will start analysing soon. Coverage in a regional newspaper and even a Danish one (in Danish). At least 18 articles improved and another 6 in sand boxes.
- We made an updated version (with VisualEditor) of the Illustrating Wikipedia brochure in Swedish.
- After internal evaluation of the Uganda pilot by WWF Sweden, they decided to give more funding (>50 000 SEK) for an extra train the trainers bootcamp. They are also starting up a new Wikipedia Center which they will run themselves (funded by SIDA). Blog post about the pilot.
- Minigrants, travelgrants, accreditations and technology pool
- 3 new minigrants were approved in Q2, 1 were finished and 1 was ongoing.
- In this years Eurovision Song Contest, the same volunteer as last year, Albin Olsson, got photo accreditation. We sponsored his trip to Denmark and provided equipment from the technology pool. He managed to get all 37 participants on both picture and videopresentation and over 1,000 files uploaded. Blog post.
- Here is a nice blog post (in Swedish) from one minigrant.
- The technology pool were used 12 times in Q2 and 1,318 media files were uploaded. Total page views for the category were 26,434,542
- 0 new travel grants were approved in Q2, 2 were finished.
- 0 new community driven projects were approved in Q2.
- 3 new minigrants were approved in Q2, 1 were finished and 1 was ongoing.
- Regular meetups
- There are regular meetups in Stockholm and Göteborg, and there are a few more cities that have had a few meetups, we are hoping that Lund, Umeå, Uppsala and Falun might become regular.
- Continued coaching of the organisation Mind, that will work to improve articles about mental health on Swedish Wikipedia.

- What worked and what did not?
- It has worked very well giving expert support to users that are curious and driven. This is definitley something that could be used more since it seem to get users motivated and well equipped.
- Unfortunately, the teaches in the Uganda pilot did not record all user names of the ones they trained which have made it a bit difficult to track

- The chapter shall create and dissiminate information and knowledge about free licenses.

- The goal is that at least one press services use free licenses correctly, making it easy to chose a free license and the user shall know what it means.
- The chapter shall influence agencies, public institutions and organisations so that they start using free licences.

- Activities conducted.
- Participation and presentation at Museernas vårmöte (The Museums Spring Meeting). This was an excellent networking opportunity. More than 30 good connections made. Interviewed by two local newspapers, made the front cover on one of them.
- Continoued meetings and planning with The Central museums coordination council. Four of them became organizational members in Wikimedia Sverige. A workshop was held with operative managers and a series of workshops are planned for autumn. An exampel page for institutions to use on Wikipedia was setup.
- Uploads
- The National Archive released all heraldic weapons (334) under a free license, they uploaded letters from Queen Christina (297) and a selection of Swedish medieval charters (29).
- In a cleanup job from last years upload from LSH further 500 images were uploaded. Blog post (in Swedish).
- The Swedish National Heritage Board used the GW toolset as a pilot to upload around 1000 images. The upload included all their images of Umeå and is available in Category:Images of Samis and of West Bothnia.
- We got funded (14,900 SEK) by .SE to give a workshop about the API:s that the Wikipedia project use. It will take place in the fall.
- We got funded (100,000 SEK) by Kulturbryggan to make free recordings of Swedish music in the public domain.

- What worked and what did not?
- For us it has been valuable to be patient. We see now that some organizations has seen true value of free knowledge after years of collaboration and some of them are on the brink to do it naturally without us guiding. Others we need to continue educate.
- There are several organizations about to do uploads and we feel that our focus on rather help them do it themselves rather than just handing files to us is a good and scalable choice.
Any additional details:
- We will have staff from Humanioraverket guest working in our office a few times during the summer, starting in June. They do contract work for different GLAM organizations and we hope this will enrich our network and possibly enable future collaborations.

- The chapter shall strive for a positive attitude towards, and increased use of, the Wikimedia projects and free knowledge by doing PR and educate the public and potential users in Sweden.
- The goal is to create a newsletter for media and the public about the Wikimedia projects and free knowledge which has at least 50 subscribers.
- The goal is to increase the number of proactive stories about Wikimedia projects in media.
- The chapter shall strive to that the projects give a great reader experience.
- The goal is to report technical problems within a week.
- The goal is that the number of untranslated strings for the software[8] in Swedish will not be lower than 95% for more than a month.
- The goal is that new extensions from the Wikimedia Foundation[9] will be translated quickly so that the language is not a hinder to activation.

- Meet Wikipedia
- We continued the Meet Wikipedia project at the Architect and design center. We tried to incorporate other projects for synergy effects. It included:
- an edit-a-thon (4 participants) with theme Umeå (the Umepedia project).
- a translation sprint with introduction to the translatewiki.net platform.
- open teacher night (4 teachers) got an introduction to how to use Wikipedia in Education.
- We continued the Meet Wikipedia project at the Architect and design center. We tried to incorporate other projects for synergy effects. It included:
- Umepedia
- Umepedia Challenge, an article writing contest, was held and was a huge success for the Umepedia project. Over 600 articles in 46 languages were written. Blog post.
- Two edit-a-thons in Umeå were held.
- During Museernas vårmöte (see above) the first two QR-pedia signs in Umeå were placed.
- Då och Nu (Then and Now)
- In collaboration with The Swedish National Heritage Board and funded by Europeana we are arranging a photo contest. As a part of the contest we also give workshops and such were held in Umeå, Lund and Kalmar. These generated quite good local press. The contest continues to september 10. - Translation
- We continued to report bugs for translatewiki, made some important last minute traslations and had a translation sprint. We also got funded (337,000 SEK) by .SE for a quite big extension of the project which will include work with translatewiki.net.
- Newsletter
- We started with a new newsletter, with news from all over the Wikimedia world. Aimed at people who do not already know everything about Wikimedia. We aim to send it fortnightly and produced 3 in Q2. They are all available publicly on our website: http://www.wikimedia.se/sv/nyhetsbrev
- Wiki Loves Monuments
- Preparations has started. The Swedish National Heritage Board are offically partnering this year too. Most of the jury is clear, the website is updated and we have produced an instructional video.
- Wikimaps
- Participated at the Wikimedia Hackathon. A new proposal for templates for maps have been made. All maps are found in Category:Content made available through Wikimaps Nordic.
- Around 20 maps were made available from two different institutions, all covering Umeå over different periods of time.
- 18 bugs and 4 feature requests were reported in Bugzilla in Q2 along with 15 reports on errounus source texts in translatewiki.net.

- What worked and what did not?
- Having an open office at a museum was great in many ways. You meet people who might not naturally meet Wikipedians and that sparks interesting conversations. It is also clear that many people know very little about the inner workings. It is very useful training talking to these people and perhaps we should create some short talking points that volunteers could use. It is a bit too easy to dive into too complex nuances of how it works, and some easy pointers would probably be good. It was also good because it made time for informal talks with museum staff, which often gave them insights and ideas how working with Wikipedia could help them in their jobs.
- The writing contest worked very well. It was interesting too see that many of the top contributors were users that participated in other contests too. This gives a clue that there might be a saturation point if there are too many contests in a short time (or overlapping).
- Having several different projects focus on a city that are in the focal point seem to be rewarding. In this case we use Umeå and the fact that it is a European cultural capital. We are very happy with the lists of media and other mentions for Umepedia and Då och Nu.

- Since the grouping for Mediawiki messages has changed on translatewiki.net (MediaWiki (most used) does not exist anymore) we will adjust goals in Q3.
Free knowledge in education
[edit]- What are the objectives of this program? Please include metrics.
- The chapter shall strive to make research financed with public funding to be published under a free license.
- The goal is to establish contacts with three financers of research.
- The chapter shall educate teachers to integrate Wikipedia into education, prominently by encouraging students to actively contribute.

- Translated and localized Wikipedia:Training/For educators to Swedish Wikipedia.

- Created two groups on Facebook for discussions (and to reach the audience), one for using Wikipedia in education (122 members by end of June) and one for Open Educational Resources (102 members), both in Swedish.

- Gave a second two-day workshop for staff at the University of Lund, this time with 15+11 participants.

- What worked and what did not?
- Having longer workshops, as we did in Lund, was useful, because there were no stress. The participants could take the time to familiarize themselves with good and featured articles to get a good sense on what goes into an Wikipedia article in their subjects.
- Unfortunatly Ipads are very popular among many teachers, and editing Wikipedia on them is (right now) not a very good experience. We will in the future emphasize to bring proper laptops to workshops for their own benefit.
- On one teacher night we experimented with doing the Wikipedia Adventure collectively. It proved not to be a very good concept, partly because of Ipads, but also because trying to do that in a larger group means there will be too much waiting time on the slowest. In the future, we will rather use the Wikipedia Adventure either as something they should do before a workshop, or as an exercise when they get home.
- Both schools and universities seem quite okay with covering costs related to workshops and seminars. We will explore this further.

- There will be synergy effects between the feedback process part and the new translation project, since part of the funding there cover work with Open Badges.

- We participated in the Big Fat Brussels meeting. Notes and comments. A few other chapters were interested in localizing/translating our Free Public Information Brochure.
- Gave a introductary presentation about Wikipedia as a volunteer project for other volunteer organisations (25 in audience and 147 video views). Video and slides (both in Swedish).

- What worked and what did not?
- The power of face to face meetings are potentially huge. However it takes both time to travel and it cost a lot. Unfortunatly, video meetings with more than ten participants are still quite hard. Having better tools in this area could really serve the community.
- It was very interesting seeing the number of viewers of the video (there were even 29 live views, more than in the room). The presentation immediatly led to an interview with an author who is writing a book on volunteerism, where Wikipedia may be dedicated an entire chapter.

[edit]A key objective of the funding is to enable the movement as a whole to understand how to achieve shared goals better and faster. An important way of doing this is to identify lessons learned from entities who receive funds, and to share these lessons across the movement. The purpose of this section is to elicit some of these insights, which will be shared throughout the movement. Please answer the following questions in 1–2 paragraphs each.
What were your major accomplishments in the past quarter, and how did you help to achieve movement goals?
- The Umepedia project has been working very well. It has opened several different doors, like being exposed in museums so that the public see Wikipedia in a positive and trustworthy context, content donations that enriches the projects, partherships with the educational sector.
What were your major setbacks in the past quarter (e.g., programs that were not successful)?
- No major setbacks in Q2.
What factors (organizational, environmental) enabled your success?
- More or less same as in Q1. We are getting to be a more mature organisation which helps us in unexpected situations.
What unanticipated challenges did you encounter and how did this affect what you were able to accomplish?
- Wikimedia Sverige got sued by BUS over images used on http://offentligkonst.se that are depicting public art. Wikimedia Sverige were previosuly contacted by them to negotiate a deal for using them, but our interpretation is that it is legal use according to what could be called a freedom of panorama clause in the law. The blog post is our most read with 2,876 views.
What changes might you make in executing your initiatives into the next quarter?
- Depending on estimates in what the law suit might cost, temporary shifts in budget might become necessary.
