Global sysops/2009 proposal
This proposal is kept for historical interest. Any policies mentioned may be obsolete. If you want to revive the topic, you can use the talk page or start a discussion on the community forum. |
...unless it's listed below.
Global sysops have access to the sysop interface on wikis where this is permitted by policy (usually small wikis that do not have active local sysops available). These users have access strictly for maintenance and countering abuse; they have no editorial control over content or the local community.
By default, they do not have access on any wiki unless that wiki opts in (see a list of wikis which have opted in). Wikis may opt out after they have opted in.
Policy
[edit]Obtention
[edit]Requests should be placed on Steward requests/Global permissions. The request will be approved if there is 75% approval after two weeks and no objections from stewards. Anyone with a global account including Meta and at least one active account on any other Wikimedia wiki is eligible to comment.
Removal
[edit]Continued global sysop access depends on activity and the continued support of the Wikimedia community.
- inactivity: Global sysops will automatically lose their access if it is unused for more than six months.
- vote of confidence: Community support may be tested by a vote of confidence, in which 75% of eligible users must support the user's continued access for it to be retained. At least three users eligible to comment must support the need for one before it can be begun. Once begun, the global sysop may not use their global sysop access until the vote is closed.
- regular confirmation: In addition, they are subject to regular confirmations one year after their election or last confirmation. They must maintain at least 75% support by eligible users for continued access. There is no minimum number of commenting users required, and they will pass if nobody objects; it is not an election to regain access, but a poll to express disagreement with their use of it.
Contacting global sysops
[edit]Global sysops must have user pages on every wiki they use their global sysop access on, which provides contact information or links to their primary user page (creation bot available).
If a user cannot resolve a dispute by talking to the global sysop, they can place a complaint on Talk:Global sysops.
Local policies
[edit]Local policies for global sysop access usage can be implemented on wikis, with a redirect from the "Project:Global sysops" page to the local policy. (The local policy doesn't have to be a separate page; it can be one line at the top of a community discussion page, for example). This should be avoided if possible, to avoid complicating countering crosswiki abuse. If this is done, please leave a note on talk:Global sysops so this can be noted in the table.
