From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Do you use the internet

[edit]

Our respondents who used the internet

Top reasons for using the internet

[edit]
2080 Responses - 2.2% margin of error

Awareness of Wikipedia

[edit]
2568 Responses - 2% margin of error

During our travels outside of North America and Europe, we noticed that many people we spoke with were completely unfamiliar with Wikipedia, despite having internet access. We were curious to quantify our anecdotal observations to understand how widespread this was.

Mobile phone usage

[edit]
2568 Responses - 2% margin of error

Since our phone survey was based on calling random numbers, we could have reached either land lines or mobile phones.

Smartphones vs Feature phones

[edit]
2192 Responses - 2% margin of error

To avoid differences of interpretation of what exactly a smartphone is, we instead focused on whether their phone could possibly access the internet. This is the key differentiator between feature phones and smart phones, as well as identifying who might be able to access Wikipedia on the internet.

Internet access method

[edit]
1446 Responses - 2.6% margin of error

This is significantly different than our results in Ghana, where very few people use Wifi.

App usage

[edit]
1446 Responses - 2.6% margin of error

We were interested in how much smartphone users here actively downloaded and used Apps.

How they learned about Wikipedia

[edit]
1169 Responses - 2.9% margin of error

Of the respondents who had heard of Wikipedia, we asked how they had found out about it. Although "Internet" was the popular single answer, talking to other people (combining school with friends and family) actually exceeds that of discovering Wikipedia on the internet.

Reasons for using Wikipedia

[edit]
816 Responses - 3.5% margin of error

Frequency of use

[edit]
1169 Responses - 2.9% margin of error

The results of this question are used further in the survey to ask additional questions of the infrequent or non-users and learn more about their perspectives.

How interested were the infrequent / non-users

[edit]
353 Responses - 5.3% margin of error

For the respondents who said 'rarely' or 'never' to how often they use Wikipedia, we asked about their interest in Wikipedia. We wanted to see if people who didn't use it just didn't care, or wanted to but experienced some barrier

For those users with some interest, what was the biggest barrier

[edit]
199 Responses - 7% margin of error

For the respondents who said 'rarely' or 'never' to how often they use Wikipedia, and also said they had some level of interest in Wikipedia, we asked them what they felt the largest barrier was.

For users with no interest, what would help

[edit]
154 Responses - 8% margin of error

For the respondents who said 'rarely' or 'never' to how often they use Wikipedia, and also said they had no interest in Wikipedia, we asked them what might help.
