The Ghanaian Languages Wikimedia Community Meetup 2024 is the second edition of a mini conference that is designed to bring Wikimedians together who are working on the indigenous language Wikipedia's in Ghana.

The goal of the conference is to bring most Ghanaians who contribute to the local languages together to give them a sense of belonging and boost their confidence in digitizing their languages to prevent it from going into extinction and also closing up the digital divide that keeps people disconnected from the internet because of language barriers since these communities face similar challenges.

Again, it will provide an opportunity for members to learn from the various communities in Ghana because every community has its strengths and weaknesses and bringing all the language Wikimedia communities together will provide fertile ground for brainstorming on how to better stand out the language platforms and also learn from the others what has worked and what did not work. And also, every community has a special skill and experience so bringing these communities together would help us learn from one another skills such as community development, volunteer retention, leadership development, and others.

Finally, this conference will help to recruit new volunteers: meetups provide avenues for creating awareness about the existence of Wikimedia volunteers which attract the attention of the general public hence leading to the recruitment of more volunteers.

Indigenous language digital activism workshop for speakers of Ghanaian languages

As part of the second edition of Ghanaian Languages Wikimedia Community Meetup 2024 there will be a one-day workshop dubbed “Strengthening your language on the Internet through digital activism” organized by Rising Voices in partnership with the Ghanaian Languages Wikimedia Community.

Digital Activism workshop by Rising Voices as part of the Ghanaian Languages Communities Meetup in Tamale

Date: 26th July, 2024

Time: 8:30am - 5:30pm

Within the framework of the upcoming International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022–2032, Rising Voices has partnered with UNESCO to develop a digital activism toolkit called “Digital Initiatives for Indigenous Languages” designed for speakers of Indigenous, minority, and low-resourced languages who want to make an impact by promoting their languages in digital spaces. Low-resourced languages is a term often used for languages for which fewer online resources or content exist.

The toolkit resource intends to serve as a roadmap for speakers and other users who are currently engaged in or who want to start working to promote and strengthen their language, whether in cyberspace or by using digital media and technologies.

Developed in close collaboration with digital activists from around the world, and allied partners, the resource draws upon years of experience and best practices by these networks of language digital activists eager to share their knowledge with other communities. Organized according to “Key Approaches” that contribute to the strategic goal of language reclamation and revitalization, the resource provides innovative examples of digital activism along with reflections on how to match activities with intended impact.
