- Abstract
Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That's our mission statement. Back in 2014 I started the wikiproject Sum of all paintings to get all notable paintings on Wikidata. We currently have over 300.000 painting items on Wikidata.
Open Data is essential for the Sum of all Paintings. Without the data we can't document the paintings or illustrate these paintings. In the past a lot of GLAM projects have focused on direct interaction between Wikimedia volunteers and a cultural institution, for example with an image or data donation. This doesn't scale. We as the GLAMwiki community should focus more on advocacy for open data so more GLAMs will release their (meta)data. This is much broader than only paintings.
I'll highlight some of the open data initiatives I came across and why some countries are much more visible than other countries. This should provide a starting point to talk with your local GLAM about Open Data.
And of course the presentation will contain lots of paintings
