Abstract

The aim of this short talk is to highlight the lack of libraries in Wikidata. Coverage of the major, internationally renowned libraries, such as the Library of Congress, British Library, Bibliothèque nationale de France etc. is strong and rightly so given the size and richness of their holdings. There is, however, only sparse coverage of smaller, public libraries even though these institutions are especially valuable to the communities they serve. Personally, I found this to be a huge disappointment and decided to address the problem. Using donated or open data about public libraries in England and Wales, I have started to add the libraries that are missing from Wikidata. I would like to share some of the data visualisations that are now possible, such as a map of public libraries in Wales, and images of the libraries to illustrate why this is both an interesting and worthwhile task.
