Federated Wikimedia
The proposal is to convert Wikimedia Foundation projects to federated wikis for resiliency and maximum distribution. From 2011 to 2015, C2 moved to a federated model. Would that work for the Wikimedia projects?
History
[edit]Since C2 moved to a federated model, the ActivityPub standard was created and published in 2018 by the World Wide Web Consortium. Adoption was fairly niche for the first few years and there was a notable bump in Fediverse instances in the 2020s, in part as an alternative to Big Tech social media. By 2023, it was common to hear talk of federated instances that can communicate with one another across multiple online services.
Additionally, a very old idea in the WikiSphere was OneBigWiki: the notion that all wikis could be interconnected and there would be no hard distinction between them.
