Fante Wikimedians Community

Background

The Fante Wikimedia Community is a Wikimedia mission align Group in Ghana with a mission to enhance the visibility of the Fante language on Wikipedia and ultimately preserve the culture and heritage of the Fante tribe in Ghana. Fante, also known as Fanti, Fantse, or Mfantse, is one of the three principal members of the Akan dialect continuum, along with Asante and Akuapem

Fante is spoken by at least 2 million people in Ghana. It is principally spoken in the central and southern regions of Ghana as well as in settlements in other regions in western Ghana. Notable speakers include Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, and former Ghanaian presidents Kwame Nkrumah and John Atta Mills. Maya Angelou learned Fante as an adult during her stay in Ghana.

The Fante Wikipedia incubator and Fante on translatewiki was revived after the Twi translatewiki project. This was because the event hosted participants who speak Fante and would like to contribute in Fante

Objectives

  • Enhance the visibility of Fante language on Wikipedia and other sister projects
  • Encourage editing on Wikipedia and other sister projects in local languages.
