Overview

[edit]

The Wikimedia for Human Rights 2024 campaign focuses on enriching understanding and raising awareness of critical human rights issues related to sustainability in Nigeria. The initiative aims to deepen discourse on sustainable agriculture, the right to food, sustainable urban construction, housing rights, clean water, sanitation, and environmental protection. These topics are pivotal for achieving sustainable development goals as outlined in international human rights frameworks and the SDGs.

The campaign identifies significant knowledge gaps within Wikimedia platforms, particularly Wikipedia and Wikidata, concerning these issues in the Nigerian context. Essential environmental topics such as water and sanitation, crucial for health sustainability (linked to SDGs 5, 3, & 13), lack comprehensive data and articles. Additionally, information on Nigeria's ministries and organizations addressing these challenges is inadequate, hindering global understanding and local access to crucial knowledge.

Language accessibility poses another barrier, particularly affecting communities like the Igala, who lack climate change information in their native language. This gap exacerbates knowledge disparities and limits community engagement in sustainability efforts. In regions like the Niger Delta, where environmental degradation profoundly impacts human rights (SDGs 3, 6, 13, 14, 15), information is sparse, necessitating focused content development to highlight and address these issues.

The campaign's strategy involves creating and enhancing Wikimedia content tailored to Nigeria's specific contexts. This includes improving information availability and quality, translating key content into local languages, and engaging experts and community members for content verification and enrichment. By empowering communities with informed knowledge on sustainable practices, human rights, and environmental protection, the campaign aims to foster active participation aligned with the SDGs and international human rights standards.
