Only as good as our sources
[edit]Abstract/description
[edit]The quality of the Wiki projects is tied closely to the quality of sources cited.
This is an interactive talk to build our knowledge of finding and assessing reliable, useful, and accessible sources for editors working on Australian content It will focus on issues and recommendations raised in reports by First Nations authors, and consider how we can support editors in "assessing appropriate resources, prioritise resources developed by First Nations peoples, and improve the appropriateness of articles content and descriptions relating to First Nations topics" (Thorpe, Sentance & Booker, 2023). We will investigate the Wikipedia Library and other sources of contemporary, authoritative sources to counteract over-reliance on Trove’s inherent historical bias. A question for discussion is how would we determine and document reliable and unreliable sources relating to Australia?
What I am hoping to achieve
[edit]As a result of this session, participants will deepen their understanding of Australian sources, and engage with other Wikimedians to consider important questions of quality and cultural responsiveness.
Relationship to Wiki skills or to the theme
[edit]Developing skills relating to sources and citation, and addressing the diversity theme by centering voices of First Nations authors.
