Lviv hosted a spring wikischool for Ukrainian high school students

Summary: At the end of May, the Department of Tourism of the Lviv Polytechnic National University together with Wikimedia Ukraine held a spring school “Introduction to Wikipedia: how to start writing about your native land” in Lviv, Ukraine. This five-day training was aimed at developing an interest in their native land and Wikipedia among high school students, as well as teaching them the basics of working with this platform and other Wikimedia projects such as Wikivoyage, Wikiquotes and Wikimedia Commons.

This is the second wikischool for high school students which is organized by Wikimedia Ukraine member Maryana Senkiv in Lviv.

The program included interesting competitions and quizzes, with winners receiving souvenirs from the Wikimedia Ukraine and teachers of tourism. Ten active participants who made the biggest contribution to wikiprojects were awarded certificates of successful participation in the spring school and received souvenirs.

An interesting point was the tour of the main building of the university, which was conducted by Solomiya Kharambura, a specialist from the Museum of the History of Lviv Polytechnic.

The school was attended by tenth-graders of Lviv School №99 and second-year students of the specialty “Tourism and Recreation” of the Technological Vocational College of Lviv Polytechnic. The teachers were specialists from the Department of Tourism of the Institute of Sustainable Development of Lviv Polytechnic: Maryana Senkiv, Myroslava Haba, Natalia Dnistryanska, Halyna Ilnytska-Hykavchuk, Andrii Terebukh, as well as experienced Wikipedians Halyna Kachurovska and Serhii Lypko.

Thanks to a rich training program, participants had the opportunity to learn the basics of editing and creating articles on local history topics in Wikipedia, as well as in sister wikiprojects — Wikivoyage and Wikiquote. They uploaded their own photographs of their native land to Wikimedia Commons, created new articles and improved existing ones. In total, 17 new articles were created and about 40 existing ones were improved.
