The youngest member of Tartu Wikiclub is 15-year-old student
The first local Tartu Wikiclub started in November 2021 in a small group. It brought together people with very different backgrounds who were interested in Wikipedia. They have already written some articles, uploaded hundreds of images to Wikimedia Commons, and updated Wikiquotes. The club decided to become public in March in the frame of EduWiki Week activities. We announced the public Wikiclub meetings and invited everyone to join us.
Wikiclub is a social meeting place for people who are interested in the Wikipedia world and would like to get actively involved in Wikipedia projects. All people are welcome to join regardless of their age, interests, or speciality.
The youngest member of Tartu Wikiclub is 15-year-old Keili. She is a student of the basic school in Tartu. She came to Wikiclub because she had heard about the interesting possibilities that Wikipedia hides and wanted to learn more about it. So far she has used Wikipedia as part of her schoolwork. "I have been to Wikipedia a lot, but I never thought about how it was created. I thought it was written by a certain editor group,” says Keili.
By now Keili has already written two articles. She shares: “In my drawer, I had an old school paper “My Tree” written in the second grade. I wrote there about the vinegar tree (Rhus typhina) growing in my garden. I discovered that there was no article about this tree on Wikipedia yet. So I decided to turn my paper into a Wikipedia article.” She adds that during the process she also learned to format an article, make a taxon table, and to refer correctly to the sources. "The first article is a little complicated, but the second is already easier and more fun!" says Keili and adds that she has already written another article about the plant called Konjac in English. She also showed her articles to her biology teacher who gave her A+ in independent work.
Another Wikiclub enthusiast says: "Without joining the club, I would probably have remained only a passive reader of Wikipedia. Now, as a photo enthusiast, I have added more than five hundred photos to Wikimedia Commons, and I have learnt how to edit articles as well!”
Pille Priks: “I founded Wikiclub to help people to find their way to Wikipedia. Many smart people who could create good content on Wikipedia will never find it. Occasionally I provide training sessions on Wikipedia editing and I've seen the long road to the first article. In Wikiclub we help each other to overcome all sorts of difficulties that may come up on the way and we also motivate each other. Wikipedia can be fun and social – this is what Wikiclub wants to demonstrate!”
Tartu Wikiclub gathers once or twice a month. Every time we cover some interesting Wikipedia topics. Of course, we eat wikipizza and drink wikicoffee and all members wear wikisocks.
