[edit]Chinese students commemorate deceased philanthropist Run Run Shaw
[edit]- Community: Chinese Wikipedia

Snippet: Chinese students honor deceased philanthropist in a photo campaign.
Wikimedia User Group China organized a photo campaign to honor the memory of deceased philanthropist Sir Run Run Shaw and used the opportunity to teach a new generation of young people about his legacy. The participants were Chinese students -- mostly university level but also some from secondary schools. They photographed monuments -- some of the 6,013 schools and university buildings, public hospitals, and public theaters that Shaw donated during his lifetime.[1]
Run Run Shaw was, by all accounts, a great man. He was an advocate for and financial sponsor of both education and the arts.[2] Called "a colorful media mogul" by the New York Times, Shaw's name was synonymous with action movies and horror films, especially of the kung fu genre, which is is widely credited with inventing.[3] He used his influence and his ample wealth to better his world, his homeland, and his people. He was a very generous philanthropist. According to China News, he donated over 4.7 billion Hong Kong dollars to education.[1] Shaw passed away at the age of 106 last year.
The photo campaign ran for one month from 13 January through 15 February 2014. It was an online event only. It was the intention of the organizers to make this campaign a contest with prizes. However, because of limitations on volunteer time and capacity, it was not possible to do that this year. Nevertheless, the contributions were impressive! 81 participants from 24 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions and special administrative regions uploaded 293 high quality photos to Wikimedia Commons. The photos can be seen at Commons:Category:Shaw Memory Campaign.
This small sized photo campaign was easy to organize. And it was effective at recruiting new content contributors. Wikimedia User Group China plans to do other similar projects like this one in the future.

[edit]- There has been talk in Wikimedia Indonesia to do photo contest way way back in 2009 when photo contest was starting, however it dies because the one who talk about it is wikipedian and not a photographer. We are still looking for photographer contributor who is able to manage communities of photographers to do contents. Previously there are issues that photos from Indonesia or about Indonesia (about building) were deleted in huge numbers because the commons admin understood/ translate our copyright law as all buildings are not allowed, whether the buildings stood before Indonesia become a country and have copyright or after. So one of our architech contributor to commons left annoyed because a lot of his hardwork are deleted. Back to level 0, and we have grant for camera in here. [edit]- Community: Taiwan
- Author: Reke (WMTW)
- There are many students in Taipei Medical University (TMU) organize a group called FLYoung International Service (飛洋國際服務團) every year, and they will visit en:Swaziland or Cambodia to help local education voluntarily. They are discussing about how can they help local students and teachers by providing better access to knowledge other then using books. The idea of introducing Wikipedia to Cambodian students comes to their mind. But there are many barrier for them to do so since there is almost no internet connection in the countryside area of Cambodia, thus, the volunteer group asked Wikimedia Taiwan's advise about which offline tool is best to bring to developing countries such as Swaziland and Cambodia.
- In order to help the FLYoung group of Taipei Medical University, Shang-kuan Liang-chi, supervisor of WMTW, will hold a two-hour workshop on May 26th, 2015 to introduce Wikimedia movement and offline wikipedia.

[edit]- This is great, you should talk to Wikimedia Swiss who developing kiwix (offline) seriously or professionally for offline wikipedia. WMID was going to do similar thing, but we are building content first before seeking the vehicle to deliver it (kiwix). Siska.Doviana (talk)
- Thanks a lot, Siska. I'll remind Liang. --Reke (talk) 22:05, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
Indonesia's Basic Encyclopedia Articles Approach
[edit]- Community: Indonesia
- Author: Siska.Doviana (Indonesia)
- Summary: A lot of community effort focused on community or to grew editing community. However, sometimes this effort forgets that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, as Indonesian Wikipedia lack of basic encyclopedia articles, Wikimedia Indonesia drill hard to make sure these articles are met to be consume by the Indonesian public with a series of efforts combine.
Digitalization effort
[edit]- Sources for reference - Our previous 2010 writing competition learn, one participant who never edits wikipedia could write up to 208 good quality articles in three months.
- Lack of resources to write encyclopedic articles - However lack of resources meaning that the participants could write more articles and faster if resource and guidelines to write which encyclopedia articles that is not exist yet has been provided for them by the writing competition organizers.
- Lack of resources in Indonesian language - There are also language issues, the participant that can contribute a lot of articles are only participant who have no problem at understanding English. There are lack of resources to write encyclopedic article in Indonesian. However Indonesian do have a lot of encyclopedia articles, which are copyrighted.
Our digitalization effort provide a closed "wiki source type" full of copyrighted material in Indonesian language for the wikipedian interested to write encyclopedia articles. The design of the effort are to combine a selected participant that passed round three to have access to this online library. Unfortunately, the competition ends in June 2014 while the online library kick off on January 2015 due to technical difficulties.

- EN: In the past November, Wikimedia Community around world achieved an amazing accomplishment during the Wikipedia Asian Month. 1,286 editors created or largely expanded 4,310 articles on 41 language versions of Wikipedia, or 36 million bytes. Russian Wikipedian Winterpool contributed most articles in the Asian Month, as much as 85 articles. As the major organizer, nine Wikipedia communities from ESEA community participated in this event. Since one of our major goals of Wikipedia Asian Month is helping smaller communities to grow, we are planning to get more languages involved, especially minority or aboriginal languages. If you are interested to join us in November 2016 or have some idea to share, please discuss with us at meta talk page. (To Asian Month attendees: Some postcards are sent already. We will set the end of Febuary as the deadline for those who does not fill out the survey, and rest of postcards will be all sent by deadline.)

[edit]Waray Wikimedia events in November-December 2015 at Eastern Visayas
[edit]- Community: Sinirangan Bisaya Wikimedia Community (SBWC) with support of PhilWiki Community (Philippines)
- Author: Jojit Ballesteros (Filipino Wikimedian)
- The Sinirangan Bisaya Wikimedia Community (SBWC) conducted a series of Waray Wikimedia events from November 26, 2015 to December 2, 2015 in Eastern Visayas, Philippines. The events were supported by PhilWiki Community, a recognized Wikimedia user group. These series of Waray Wikimedia events helped in establishing partnership with the government and other organizations.
- 2015 Waray Wikimedia Forums at Greater Tacloban — The kick-off event started on November 26, 2015 at Tacloban, Leyte when Michael Ong gave his presentation during the 5th Regional Assembly of Philippine Association of Court Interpreters that was organized by the Philippine Association of Court Interpreters Inc (PHILACI). On November 28, 2015, Jojit Ballesteros and Bel Ballesteros presented Wikipedia and other Wikimedia online projects on the same assembly by PHILACI in Palo, Leyte. The main focus of these presentations was promoting the Waray Wiktionary since participants were interested in legal translation although other Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikivoyage were presented.
- 3rd Waray Wikipedia Edit-a-thon — SBWC resumed the activities on December 1, 2015 as they went to Catbalogan City to facilitate the 3rd Waray Wikipedia Edit-a-thon that was funded by the city government and some generous donors from SBWC. Through this edit-a-thon that was attended by 31 participants, there were 49,449 characters added in various Wikimedia projects. The most significant contribution of this edit-a-thon is the expansion of the Catbalogan Wikivoyage article. Participants collaboratively contributed information about Catbalogan in the English Wikivoyage. At the start of the edit-a-thon, the Catbalogan Wikivoyage entry was merely 776 bytes and basically an outline only. After the edit-a-thon, the entry was expanded to 13,313 bytes full of information.
