ESEAP Conference 2024/Report/Song Ngư

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Pisces's report on the ESEAP Conference 2024
----
Báo cáo bằng tiếng anh của Song Ngư
Showing my new-found friend the logo concept!

Hey there! This is my first solo travel experience and my first time attending a Wikimedia event in person, representing Vietnam Wikimedians User Group. I am excited to share some insights and fun facts about myself, and then answer questions about my experiences at the conference.

Pisces's nametag.

First and foremost, I have gained valuable insights from the ESEAP community, which has expanded my awareness of the diverse range of initiatives within the Wikimedia movements. As a representative of an average community in Vietnam, I believe that there is much for us to learn and work on to regain the trust and reputation between communities as we continue to move forward. Attending sessions and activities has allowed me to learn more about the Foundation and the beneficial works for the region and its communities, and also helped me evaluate my bits of knowledge about managing a community (and personal) wiki sites (including those with Wikibase extension set). After attempting to interpret from English to Vietnamese for the conference using Zoom, however, that makes me realized that there are still a lot of learning works to do, which all reminds me to "Study, study more, study forever".

You can see more on what I learned and my insights below:

Contributed

[edit]
  • Main: Volunteering as an interpreter (English to Vietnamese)
  • Nominated Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam as a potential host for the next ESEAP Conference in 2026, but lost to Taiwan by a landslide, with only eight in-place votes and one online vote.
  • Brought my own set of key-chains (images wanted) and snacks (coconut candies) to the treat table.
    • There were also supposed to be dried fruits, but I then decided against it due to potential allergies.
  • I'm the original maker of the concept logo for the Vietnamese transcribed version, which then Ahmad Ali rebuilds the concept to an actual logo that you see in the beginning of this report.

Plans after the conference

[edit]
  • Love myself more.
  • Be more active in the ESEAP region.
  • Looking for a personal/group project and presenting about it in a not-near-future event.
  • Strengthen the collaborations and relationships between communities and people that I met.
  • Applies what I learned to existing wiki projects and communities (including personal ones).

Insights and fun facts

Travelling

[edit]
  • The Navan app is user-friendly for booking flight tickets but lacks flexibility for last-minute changes. I needed to modify my arrival flights, but the app blocked the change as the airline had already adjusted my departure to an earlier flight. Furthermore, I encountered difficulty adding extra options to my booking through the app, so I had to visit the Malaysia Airlines website to select my seat and meal preferences.
  • Other than that, there seem to be no issues travelling to the venue and other designated places by the conference.

Programme

[edit]
  • Print the program lists out: we don't always have time to take our phones in and out.
  • As I am only interested in technical kinds of stuff behind things (MediaWiki, Wikibase, etc.), workshops are always something that I would be happy to attend :3
  • Be on time: We lose a lot of time for social events and photo walks, so I suggest finding a better plan for time management.
  • The "anime" keychains might not be suitable for Commons, as the characters there are copyright-protected.
    • I commissioned an artist to draw them to show my support for Wikimedia movements by letting Scorpio hold the Wikipedia puzzle piece.
    • It was supposed to be bigger, but I chose the wrong size for them, so you can barely see the infamous "W" logo.
