ESEAP Conference 2024/Report/Ilham Mufti Laksono
The ESEAP Conference is a biennial international conference held by the Wikimedia Foundation. The ESEAP conference 2024 was held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia on 10–12 May 2024, where Wikimedians from various countries in Southeast Asia, East Asia and Pacific regions participated.
Things learned at the conference
[edit]- As a participant who attended the ESEAP conference for the first time and attended an international conference held by the Wikimedia Foundation for the second time (where I was a participant at Wikimania 2023), of course I learned how to network with international communities, especially those related to Wikimedia projects. I often heared stories from other participants from various countries, both during presentations and outside presentations. I took the example of Wikimedians from New Zealand, where they optimized the Wikimedia project to preserve the languages spoken by the indigenous people there.
- Apart from learning about networking, I also learned about human diversity from every activity at this conference. In this conference, presentations can use languages other than English. I also used Indonesian when I made presentations so that I felt comfortable explaining things in the presentation. I also often paid attention to other participants who also make presentations using various languages such as Sundanese, Malay, Mandarin and Kadazandusun. When I and the other participants were invited to take a trip to the Mari-Mari Cultural Village, I saw and learned how diverse Sabah's society is, which is similar to that in Indonesia, especially in Kalimantan. From there, I got inspiration to increase tolerance towards human diversity. especially in running Wikimedia projects.
- Certainly, I gained various new knowledge regarding Wikimedia projects. I gained knowledge about how to use Lingua Libre so that it can be applied in editing Wiktionary. I also learned how to use the Open Street Map which is commonly used in Wikimedia projects. I also learned how useful Wikipedia is in supporting learning in schools, especially in boarding schools, where the presenter took a case study at a boarding school in the Sandakan area, Sabah.
Things the participant contributed or participated in the conference
[edit]In this conference, I had the opportunity to be a presenter in a presentation entitled "WikiBanua: The Way to Unite Community Members" on Saturday, 11 May 2024 from 16:30 MYT16:45 MYT (8:30 to 8:45 UTC) in the Mahua 1 room. In this presentation, I told the audience about the WikiBanua project held by the Banjar Wikimedia Community and funded by Wikimedia Indonesia. In this presentation, I said that from this project, members became more enthusiastic in improving their skills and contributing to Wikimedia projects, increased their sense of loyalty towards members, and provided inspiration for many people, especially Wikimedians.

Plans after the conference
[edit]- Increase contributions to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and other Wikimedia projects.
- Play a more active role in various ESEAP forums, Wikimedia Indonesia forums, Banjar Wikimedia Community forums, and other Wikimedia forums.
- Motivate Wikimediawan friends, especially in the Banjar Wikimedia Community, to always increase their contributions to Wikimedia projects and be able to participate in activities held by the Wikimedia Foundation, especially in ESEAP Conference and Wikimania.
- Would like to plan a personal project related to Wikimedia if time permits.
Suggestions
[edit]I suggest to the committee that in the future someone will be a time keeper in each session and each event room so that there are no delays. Apart from that, I ask the committee to fix the sessions before the conference series begins so that no sessions are delayed or even cancelled. I also suggest that games with prizes, ice breaking, or other things be held frequently so that participants don't get bored during the sessions being held.
Comments
[edit]For me, this is a very extraordinary event that I participated in this year, especially related to Wikimedia. Nevertheless, there needs to be improvements here and there so that the next conference is better than the previous one.
Oh yes, I ask for help from the committee to immediately upload the recording of the session on Wikimedia Commons or other media so that I can recall the things that were said during the conference. I also ask participants to add presentation slides and/or session recordings to your session submission page in meta if you wish.
Acknowledgments
[edit]I would like to give thanks to the Wikimedia Foundation, especially the ESEAP Regional Cooperation which houses the collaboration of Wikimedians from the Southeast Asia, East Asia and Pacific regions which has given me the opportunity to become a participant by obtaining an activity scholarship from the organizer. this conference. I also give thanks to Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia, as the host committee, who had tried hard to make this conference a success. I also give thanks to Wikimedia Indonesia and Komunitas Wikimedia Banjar (Banjar Wikimedia Community) who also supported the success of this conference and gave me the opportunity to be a participant and scholarship recipient in this conference.
